Clinical distinction between nasal optic disc hypoplasia (NOH) and glaucoma with NOH-like temporal visual field defects.

PURPOSE: To report on the clinically important differences between nasal optic hypoplasia (NOH) and glaucoma with NOH-like temporal visual field defect (VFD). METHOD: Five NOH (four bilateral and one unilateral) patients, three unilateral NOH patients with glaucoma, and two glaucoma patients with NOH-like temporal VFD were clinically characterized. Superior segmental optic nerve hypoplasia was also associated with glaucoma in one eye of a bilateral NOH case and the NOH eye of a unilateral NOH patient. Ocular manifestations including refractive errors, size, and appearances of the optic discs,

Optical coherence tomography differs in neuromyelitis optica compared with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is associated with destructive inflammatory lesions, resulting in necrosis and axonal injury. Disability from multiple sclerosis (MS) is due to a combination of demyelination and varying axonal involvement. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), by measuring retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) as a surrogate of axonal injury, has potential to discriminate between these two conditions. METHODS: Included were 22 subjects with NMO or NMO spectrum disorders and 47 with MS. Seventeen subjects with NMO and all with MS had a remote history of optic neuritis (ON) in a

Calretinin expression in specific neuronal systems in the brain of an advanced teleost, the grey mullet (Chelon labrosus).

The distribution of calretinin (CR) in the brain of an "advanced" teleost, the grey mullet, was studied by using immunoblotting and immunocytochemical techniques. In immunoblots of protein extracts of rat and mullet brains, the CR antibody stained a single band of about 29 kDa. CR immunoreactivity was observed in specific neuronal populations of all brain regions. The primary olfactory system, the optic nerve fibers, and some sensory fibers of other cranial nerves exhibited strong CR immunoreactivity. In the forebrain, the CR-immunoreactive (CR-ir) populations were scarce in the telencephalon

Design of a high-uniformity illumination system based on multi-beam superposition.

In biomedical experiments such as in vivo microscopy, to achieve high-uniformity illumination on two differently sized illuminated surfaces within a confined space, a multi-beam superposition illumination system comprising a laser source, multi-channel optical fibers, a square light pipe, and a projection lens was designed. Based on the principle of étendue conservation, the integrating square light pipe was designed; meanwhile, using the edge ray principle, the projection lens was designed in the form of critical illumination, and uniformity was enhanced through the superposition of four symm…

Image enhancement network based on fiber topology-preserving multi-module fusion for neuron reconstruction.

The rapid development of optical labeling and imaging technologies has enabled scientists to capture three-dimensional images of mammalian brains at the single-neuron level. However, it has also brought about numerous technical challenges. In neuronal images, fibers exhibit lower fluorescence intensity than cell bodies and are densely packed, making it difficult to distinguish fiber signals from background noise or resolve connectivity accurately. While sparse high-brightness labeling and sensitive imaging technologies have partially addressed these issues, they have not been fundamentally res

Optical bistability in GaInAsP/InP coupled-circular resonator microlasers.

Optical bistability is realized in GaInAsP/InP coupled-circular resonator microlasers, which are fabricated by planar technology. For a coupled-circular resonator microlaser with the radius of 20 μm and a 2 μm-wide bus waveguide, hysteresis loops are observed for the output power coupling into an optical fiber versus the cw injection current at room temperature. The laser output spectra of the upper and lower states of the hysteresis loop indicate that the bistability is related to mode competitions. The optical bistability can be explained as the mode competition between the symmetry and anti

Non-contact optical spectroscopy for metabolic and vascular characterizations of orthotopic tongue cancer models in vivo.

Most tissue optical spectroscopy platforms use a fiber probe for light delivery and collection, while the inconsistent probe-sample contact could induce significant distortions in the measured optical signals, which consequently bring analysis errors. Moreover, it will be practically difficult to use a fiber probe for measurements in some cases such as oral cancer investigations using small animal models. To address the critical challenge, we report a portable, lens-based, optical spectroscopy device capable of quantifying key vascular and metabolic parameters in vivo without probe-sample cont

Synthesis, properties, and mechanistic insight into the self-assembly of a lamellar fibrous superstructure from a synthetically simple discotic molecule.

The discotic molecule 4-chloro-2,6-bis(octadecylamino)-pyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde, displays gelation behavior in dodecane, heptane, chloroform, and dichloromethane. The aggregation behavior of this material was studied by dynamic light scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, polarized optical microscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction techniques. Combined with molecular modeling calculations, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H NMR studies, we propose a mechanism for the self-assembly of this fibrous lamellar architecture. Not

Glaucoma in an eye with situs inversus of the optic disc.

Situs inversus of the optic disc is a congenital abnormality characterized by dysversion of the optic nerve head and surrounding retinal vessels. Here, we report the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) characteristics of eyes with situs inversus of the optic discs with and without glaucoma, as imaged using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). OCT findings of an eye with situs inversus of optic disc and uveitic glaucoma revealed abnormal RNFL thinning. After six months of treatment, progressive RNFL thinning in the superior-nasal and inferior-nasal areas was found. The fellow eye wi

[Optic nerve drusen and deep visual fields defects].

PURPOSE: Optic nerve drusen needs to be included in the differential diagnosis of pseudopapilledema. As the identification of this entity by funduscopy may be difficult, ultrasonography has thus become the gold standard for its diagnosis. Severe optic nerve drusen has been correlated with a reduction of the nerve fiber layer measured by optic coherence tomography and with the presence of serious visual field defects. To demonstrate the relationship between extensive optic nerve drusen and visual field defects. METHOD: A prospective observational study of the visual fields of a series of 5 pat

Multicolor Imaging of Optic Disc Drusen.

Optic disc drusen (ODD) are calcified deposits at the anterior optic nerve that are often detectable by ophthalmic imaging, including optical coherence tomography and fundus autofluorescence imaging. Multicolor (MC) imaging is a novel modality that captures reflectance of blue, green, and near-infrared laser lights with confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy to rapidly acquire high-resolution reflectance images of the optic disc and retina. Here, we show an eye with 3 MC imaging features of ODD, including prominent green hyperreflectance of the optic disc, green sheathing of the papillary and

The Role of Optical Coherence Tomography in the Acute Management of Neuro-Ophthalmic Diseases.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) can provide high-speed and high-resolution images of the anatomical structures of the optic nerve head and macula. However, in neuro-ophthalmic conditions that present acutely, structural changes lag functional deficits, and the role of OCT in the acute setting has been challenged. This review aims to summarize the recent literature and evidence supporting the use of OCT in the acute management of some common neuro-ophthalmic scenarios, including the differential diagnosis of optic disc swelling, and in patients with suspected papilledema, optic neuritis, isc

Slow intrinsic optical signals in the rat spinal dorsal horn in slice.

Tetanic stimulation of high-threshold primary afferent fibers in the dorsal root was found to elicit intrinsic optical signals (IOSs) in transverse slices of 11- to 20-day-old rat spinal cords. The IOS, lasting for 30 s or longer, was most prominent in the lamina II of the dorsal horn. Treatment with a Na+-K+-2Cl- co-transport blocker, furosemide, abolished the IOS, suggesting that the origin of the IOS is the cellular swelling due to an activity-dependent rise in extracellular K+. Substance P antagonist spantide, glutamate antagonists 2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid and 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxa

[A new concept for keratoprosthesis].

Although keratoprosthesis (after Strampelli and Cardona) is successful in selected cases, it remains doubtful whether the apparent problems of these procedures can be solved. The Cardona-Strampelli concept was therefore abandoned; a new design was evolved and new alloplastic materials were used--silicone for the optical zone and carbon fibers for the haptic part of the prosthesis. The interaction of living tissue with these alloplastic materials was investigated in tissue-culture experiments and in vivo, and indicated that the materials had excellent properties for prosthetic purposes. Stable

Anesthetically blocked optic nerve conduction in congenital stationary night blindness.

It has been hypothesized that the negative configuration of the electroretinogram (ERG) in congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) may change to a positive configuration following loss of the inhibitory function of the optic nerve centrifugal fibers. In order to study this hypothesis, the ERGs before and after blocking optic nerve conduction by retrobulbar anesthesia were recorded in a patient with CSNB, who had retinal breaks and was being treated with cryopexy under retrobulbar anesthesia. After complete blockade of the optic nerve conduction induced by retrobulbar anesthesia, the ERG s
