UNLABELLED: Our objective is to prospectively report very early complications and outcomes of cerebellopontine angle (CPA) surgery. Between January and August 2007, 72 patients were operated on by different transpetrosal approaches in a tertiary referral center. During preoperative assessment, facial nerve function (House-Brackmann grading system), the presence of vertigo or tinnitus and caloric test results were recorded and correlated with complications and symptoms occurring daily from day (D) 1 to D 8. The overall number of complications did not differ from those of former retrospective st

OBJECTIVE: There are some kinds of sicknesses provoked by inadequate adaptation to physical and/or psychogenic stress in daily life. Delayed endolymphatic hydrops (DEH) is an inner ear disease like Ménière's disease (MD) characterized by episodic vertigo in the setting of preexisting unilateral deafness that especially occurs in civilized people with a stressful lifestyle. Its otopathologic finding was demonstrated to be inner ear endolymphatic hydrops through a temporal bone study in 1976, as in the case with MD in 1938. To elucidate the relationship between stress and the inner ear, we exami

Objective Transcanal exclusive endoscopic ear surgery requires the management of the endoscope and the surgical instruments in the external auditory canal. Bleeding in this narrow space is one of the most challenging issues, especially for novice endoscopic ear surgeons. We aim to assess the severity and occurrence of bleeding and describe strategies to control the bleeding during endoscopic ear surgery. We hypothesize that bleeding is reasonably controllable in endoscopic ear surgery. Study Design Case series with chart review. Setting Tertiary referral center. Subjects and Methods We retrosp

PURPOSE: Patient-to-image registration is a preliminary step required in surgical navigation based on preoperative images. Human intervention and fiducial markers hamper this task as they are time-consuming and introduce potential errors. We aimed to develop a fully automatic 2D registration system for augmented reality in ear surgery.
METHODS: CT-scans and corresponding oto-endoscopic videos were collected from 41 patients (58 ears) undergoing ear examination (vestibular schwannoma before surgery, profound hearing loss requiring cochlear implant, suspicion of perilymphatic fistula, contralat
