Basal cell adenoma is a rare type of benign salivary gland tumor found most commonly in the parotid gland. We present a rare case of basal cell adenoma arising in the minor salivary gland of the upper lip. The patient was a 59-year-old Japanese man who visited our department in December 2012 with a chief complaint of a mass in the upper lip, which had increased in size over several years. A mobile, elastic, and relatively soft mass without tenderness was palpable in the upper lip region. The mucosa of the upper lip covering the mass was normal. Tumor extirpation was performed under local anest

The patient was a 63-year-old man with Stage IV gastric cancer (cT3, cNX, cM1[LYN]). After chemotherapy with S-1 plus paclitaxel (PTX), a partial response was achieved, and distal gastrectomy was subsequently performed. During continued chemotherapy with S-1 plus PTX after surgery, enlarged lymph nodes (#16) were observed. Metastasis was detected and treated with radiation therapy. Ten months after the cervical and Virchow lymph node metastases were detected, lymph node dissection was performed. After the second surgery, chemotherapy with S-1 plus cisplatin (CDDP) was selected, but the regimen

BACKGROUND: Oncocytic lipoadenoma is an uncommon benign salivary gland tumor. There are only rare case reports of this distinct entity in which only the histopathologic aspects are discussed. Fine needle aspiration cytologic (FNAC) findings of oncocytic lipoadenoma have not yet been documented.
CASE: A 50-year-old woman presented with a slow-growing swelling in the left parotid region that was clinically interpreted as a soft tissue tumor, with a differential of neurofibroma/lipoma. FNAC showed moderate cellularity, with oncocytic cells arranged predominantly as microacini in a prominent lipo…

Head and neck cancers during pregnancy are rising in incidence. Clinicians need to be aware of the principles of managing these cases. This paper is a review of the literature of head and neck cancers during pregnancy with a short case series of six non-thyroid pregnancy-associated cancers treated by a head and neck oncology surgeon. The age range is 20-34 years. Tumour types include carcinoma of the tongue, nasopharynx, maxillary sinus, parotid gland, subglottic region, and the neck. Five patients were treated surgically and four were treated with either chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Both foe

An 11-year-old boy with multiply relapsed lymphoblastic disease became transfusion dependent with myelodysplasia and chromosomal abnormalities after 5 years of aggressive therapy. At 5 years of age, he presented with transient idiopathic hypoplastic anemia and neutropenia that spontaneously resolved within a month. Three months later, he experienced lymphoblastic lymphoma in the left parotid region and subsequently experienced disease relapse in his testicles, bone marrow, and central nervous system during a 3-year period. He has received multiagent chemotherapy, autologous peripheral blood st…

BACKGROUND: Parotidectomies sometimes leave a conspicuous soft-tissue defect in the dorsal part of the cheek.
METHODS: The authors present a modification of the standard technique of parotidectomy which is reserved for the surgical management of benign parotid tumors. The incision of the skin follows the guidelines for standard subcutaneous rhytidectomy with a modification according to the Redon incision. They use flaps of the subcutaneous musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), which they fold or rotate in order to fill the soft-tissue defect following parotidectomy. The preparation of the skin an

Kimura disease (KD) is a rare inflammatory soft tissue disorder of unknown origin most frequent in Asians, the prevalence of which is growing in Western countries. Painless papules and/or nodules with a predilection for the head and the neck region, lymphadenopathies, parotid gland involvement, eosinophilia, and raised IgE levels are parts of its presentation. Renal involvement with various forms of glomerulonephritis, including membranous nephropathy (MN), can occur and is generally associated with a proteinuria that encompasses nephrotic syndrome. Corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatmen

Myoepithelial carcinoma (MC) is a malignant salivary gland neoplasm whose tumor cells demonstrate cytologic differentiation toward myoepithelial cells and lack ductal or acinar differentiation. It is a relatively rare tumor and many a times remains undiagnosed because of histopathological heterogeneity. It represents about 0.4-0.6% of all salivary gland tumors and 1.2-1.5% of carcinomas. It occurs predominantly in the parotid gland with a mean age of presentation being 55 years (range 14-86) with no sex predilection. MC appears to be a low grade malignancy when arising in a pleomorphic adenoma

Congenital aplasia of the major salivary gland is a rare condition. We report on a case of bilateral aplasia of the submandibular glands associated with a left submandibular hemangioma. A 62-year-old woman came to our department complaining of a 3-year history of left submandibular swelling. She had no notable family or personal medical history. On physical examination of the head and neck region, a 30 mm, non-tender mass was palpated in the left submandibular area. On imaging examinations including ultrasonography and CT, lack of the right submandibular gland and a left submandibular mass wit

INTRODUCTION: Myoepithelial carcinoma accounts for less than 1% of salivary gland malignant tumors. It may develop de novo or, in approximately 50% of the cases, from a pleomorphic adenoma.
OBSERVATION: A 57-year-old man with a history of a pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid treated surgically 6 years earlier, presented with a 2 cm tumor mass, palpable in the scar region. The histological examination and immunohistochemical study revealed a low-grade myoepithelial carcinoma. The patient had no complementary treatment. He presented 5 years later with a 2 cm parapharyngeal recurrence which was

We describe a 45-year-old man with neurosarcoidosis complaining of bell-shaped tightening and pain with sensory disturbance of superficial and deep sensations. The patient showed subacute progressive sensory impairment in bilateral C7-Th12 dermatomes. Triceps and patellar tendon reflexes were decreased. Chest X-ray revealed bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy without pleural effusion. There was abnormal accumulation of gallium in the bilateral hilar lymph nodes, parotid glands, and lacrimal glands on scintigraphy. Examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed an elevated CD4/CD8 ratio. Transb

Detailed postmortem examinations were conducted on 30 cattle from a dairy herd with bovine tuberculosis to determine the distribution of lesions in Mycobacterium bovis-infected cattle. Twenty-four different tissue specimens from each animal were examined for gross lesions and collected for bacteriologic culturing and histologic examination. Tuberculosis was confirmed in 15 cattle with evidence of infection in 1 or more of the following tissues: medial retropharyngeal, parotid, tracheobronchial, mediastinal, caudal deep cervical, and subiliac lymph nodes; palatine tonsil; and lung. Tomography is often needed prior to implant surgery to evaluate jaw bone dimensions. Computed tomography (CT) is advocated as an alternative. The purpose of this study was to measure the absorbed doses to radiosensitive organ in the head and neck region when CT is used. Measurements were made with extruded LiF thermoluminescent dosemeters within and on an anthropomorphic phantom examined with a Philips Tomoscan LX CT scanner. Axial scanning was performed for the maxilla and both frontal, perpendicular to the alveolus, and axial for the mandible. The highest absorbed doses were at the skin surf

PURPOSE: Malignant neoplasms of the salivary glands are extremely unusual in the pediatric age group.
METHODS: We report an 11-year-old boy who presented with a mass in the left submandibular region and a second mass in the jugularfacial venous angle.
RESULTS: Histologic evaluation determined that this was a squamous cell carcinoma of the submandibular gland with metastasis to a cervical node. Review of the literature was undertaken to identify the rate of malignant salivary gland tumors in children. Malignant salivary gland tumors are extremely rare in children. When malignancy does occur,

From July, 1978 to December, 1985, 1,138 cases of malignancies of the head and neck were treated at the authors' hospital, and up to June, 1986, 132 patients with multiple primary malignancies were detected. In all cases, the incidence rate of a multiple primary malignancy was 11.6%. In 45 (33.0%) of these head and neck cancer cases, the multiple cancer was detected simultaneously, and as for the other cases (66.7%), they were discovered metachronously. In patients with a cancer of the mesopharynx, the incidence rate of a multiple primary malignancy was the highest (25.8%), whereas in those wi
