Chondrosarcoma. II. Chondrosarcoma of the jaws: analysis of 37 cases.

Analysis was made of 37 cases of chondrosarcoma of the maxilla or the mandible. The most common complaint at initial presentation was the presence of a mass. Pain was a presenting symptom in less than half of the patients. The usual roentgenographic appearance was an ill-defined radiolucency with mottled areas of calcification. When teeth were involved, some cases showed a widened periodontal membrane space on periapical dental radiographs. Histologically, the tumors usually showed recognizable cartilage and a lobular growth pattern, but cellular evidence of malignancy was often subtle. Radica

The dental pathology of southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis).

Skulls (n = 1,205) of southern sea otters were examined macroscopically according to defined criteria. The museum specimens, acquired from strandings, varied in age from juvenile to adult, with an equal sex distribution. The results from all young adult and adult specimens were pooled according to tooth type. Ninety-two percent of teeth were available for examination, with 6.5% artifactually absent, 0.6% deemed absent due to acquired tooth loss and 0.03% deemed congenitally absent. All teeth were normal in morphology, except for three pairs of fused teeth, including two instances of fused maxi

Clinical efficacy of orifice barriers in endodontics: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Orifice barriers (OBs) are commonly placed as sub-seals following root canal treatment, to resist microbial leakage if the primary coronal seal fails. However, despite numerous in vitro studies, clinical evidence supporting their efficacy is limited. This is the first systematic review of the in vivo endodontic literature evaluating OB effectiveness in root filled teeth (RFT), addressing a critical research gap. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, Web of Science and Scopus were systematically searched from inception through 16th May 2025. Articles were screened using Covidence

Herpes Zoster of the Maxillary Division of the Trigeminal Nerve Presenting as Endodontic Post-treatment Pain: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Herpes zoster (HZ), caused by the reactivation of varicella zoster virus, presents a major diagnostic challenge in dentistry, particularly when involving the trigeminal nerve. The prodromal symptoms of HZ can closely resemble endodontic pain, leading to misdiagnosis and delayed appropriate treatment. This case report described a 54-year-old male who presented to the emergency dental clinic with severe unilateral, radiating maxillary pain originating from posterior to anterior teeth. Initially diagnosed with symptomatic apical periodontitis on a previously endodontically treated tooth #3, the p

Endodontic Microsurgery of Mandibular Molars with an Autonomous Robotic System.

Minimally invasive osteotomy and precise root-end resection are key factors in endodontic microsurgery (EMS), particularly in the mandibular molars. Autonomous robotic (ATR) systems facilitate accurate presurgical planning and real-time robot-guided osteotomy and root resection. Integrating the ATR technique with EMS can enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of the treatment. This report presents 2 cases diagnosed with symptomatic apical periodontitis in the mandibular left and right first molar. Cone-beam computed tomography and intraoral scanning data were used to design the surgical plan v

Factors associated with the outcome of root canal treatment-A cohort study conducted in a private practice.

AIM: To investigate the association of various pre-, intra- and post-operative factors on root canal treatment outcome. METHODOLOGY: In this cohort study, primary or secondary root canal treatment of mature permanent teeth was performed by a single endodontist in a private practice over 13 years, and followed 1-4 years after treatment. Treatment details and clinical and radiographic data were collected. The proportion of successfully treated teeth and roots based on strict radiographic (periapical index (PAI) ≤2) and clinical criteria (absence of pain, swelling or sinus tract) was estimated.

Enterococcus faecalis in secondary apical periodontitis: Mechanisms of bacterial survival and disease persistence.

Enterococcus faecalis is a commensal bacterium commonly found in the human gastrointestinal tract. However, in individuals with compromised immune systems, the pathogen can lead to severe illness. This opportunistic pathogen is associated with secondary apical diseases and is adept at resisting antibiotics and other forms of treatment because of its numerous virulence factors. Enterococcus faecalis is capable of disrupting the normal functions of immune cells, thereby hindering the body's ability to eradicate the infection. However, intensive research is needed in further understanding the adv

The COVID-19 pandemic and its possible impact on the treatment of odontogenic and intraoral abscesses.

Most odontogenic and intraoral abscesses can be treated on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia. However, severe disease progression may require an incision under general anesthesia (GA) with postoperative inpatient treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the first "COVID-19 year" in Germany and compare the first "COVID-19 year" with the two previous years. All consecutive cases with odontogenic or intraoral abscesses treated in an outpatient or inpatient setting between 2018 and 2021 were included in this study. Data were collected, including the type of anesthesia, length of hospital st

Herpes Zoster and association with pulp necrosis and development of apical periodontitis - a review and presentation of two case reports.

The varicella zoster virus as an aetiological agent for endodontic disease is not a well-recognised entity despite several published case reports. While advances in DNA molecular analysis techniques (PCR) have contributed to the current understanding of the potential role of the varicella zoster virus in the initiation and progression of endodontic disease, a review indicates a need for ongoing research. Case reports are presented of two female patients with a history of herpes zoster who developed pulp necrosis, with one patient progressing to apical periodontitis. Both patients received non-
