Anti-oxidant activities of the extracts from the herbs of Artemisia apiacea.

The anti-oxidant activities of the various fractions from the herbs of Artemisia apiacea were investigated. The n-hexane and n-butanol fractions were found to cause significant free radical scavenging effects on DPPH, their scavenging potencies as indicated in IC(50) values, being 230.1 and 183.7 microg/ml, respectively. The n-butanol fraction exhibited a significant decrease in serum transaminase activities elevated by hepatic damage induced by CCl(4)-intoxication in rats. All fractions tested exhibited a lipid peroxidation causing a significant decrease in MDA production in TBA-reactant assa

Carbon tetrachloride-induced changes in the activity of phase II drug-metabolizing enzyme in the liver of male rats: role of antioxidants.

Glutathione S-transferases and glutathione play an important role in the detoxification of most toxic agents. In the present study, the protective effects of some antioxidants (L-ascorbic acid (AA), vitamin E (VE) or garlic) on carbon tetrachloride-induced changes in the activity of alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and the level of glutathione (GSH) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were studied. The activities of ALT, and AST were assayed in plasma, whereas the activity of GST and the levels of GSH and TBARS

Nigella sativa L. oil protects against induced hepatotoxicity and improves serum lipid profile in rats.

The effects of 4 weeks oral intake of Nigella sativa L. (NS) oil on some liver function tests and D-galactosamine- or carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity were investigated in male albino rats. In another series of experiments, the effect of the oil on serum lipid profile was examined in male spontaneously hypertensive rats of stroke prone strain and Wistar Kyoto rats. The study showed that daily administration of the oil per se (800 mg/kg orally for 4 weeks) did not adversely effect the serum transaminases (ALT and AST), alkaline phosphatase, serum bilirubin or prothrombin activity in

Artemisia argyi folium as a traditional and safe dietary additive ameliorates metabolic syndrome via gut microbiota and its metabolites.

Artemisia argyi, a globally recognized plant widely used in medicine and food, has become an important and popular food additive in Asia and other parts of the world. However, its edible safety has always been controversial. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the safety and health benefits of A. argyi as a dietary additive. Fresh and dried A. argyi water extracts (FAA and DAA, respectively) were prepared by simulating two processing methods for edible tender A. argyi. And chemical composition analysis showed that both FAA and DAA were rich in nutritional and functional components, including polysacc

Histopathological Scoring of Renal Injury in an Experimental Model of Acute Pancreatitis Caused by Karwinskia humboldtiana Fruit: Exploring Its Potential Utility in the Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer.

Background: Karwinskia humboldtiana (Kh) is a toxic plant that produces a fruit that, when ingested in large quantities, causes damage to the lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and duodenum. Pancreatic damage was measured using a semiquantitative score, revealing that it is progressive and characterized by selective apoptosis and necrosis of the exocrine portion. However, renal injury has not been evaluated using injury scales and has only been reported descriptively. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is one of the top five causes of cancer death in the United States, and options for its treatment are l

Assessment of synergistic efficacy of carbaryl in combination with Cinnamomum cassia and Origanum vulgare essential oils against Dermanyssus gallinae.

The poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae, a prevalent ectoparasite in egg-laying poultry, severely compromises bird health and impedes the poultry industry's development. However, the escalating drug resistance due to sustained reliance on chemical acaricides highlights the urgent need for new mite management strategies. Therefore, plant essential oils (EOs), which exhibit natural acaricidal properties and environmental compatibility, represent promising candidates for developing eco-friendly acaricides. In this study, we formulated binary mixtures of the median lethal concentrations (LC50) o

[Aromatic trees and herbs that connect Heaven and earth].

It has been known for a long time that aromatic substances (essential oils) contained in plants often exert psychological effects ranging from sedative to excitatory actions. Medicinal effects have also been confirmed through numerous experiences. In ancient times, aromatic trees and herbs were offered to deities, mostly as incenses that were believed to carry people's wishes, such as requests to cure sick people, to Heaven. In the medieval periods, their deep and subtle aromas elevated aromatics to so-called "treasures of the world," while their various medicinal activities including the psyc

Beneficial effects of yam on carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic fibrosis in rats.

BACKGROUND: In a previous study, lyophilised yam reduced brain amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) accumulation and improved the antioxidative defence system in senescence-accelerated (SAMP8) mice. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the hepatic protection of yam in the carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic fibrosis of rats. Hepatic fibrosis was induced in rats via intraperitoneal injections of CCl(4) at a dose of 1 mL kg(-1) body weight (BW) twice weekly for 8 weeks. Three groups of rats were gavaged daily with yams at doses of 0.5, 1 and 2 g kg(-1) BW for 8 weeks, respectively. RESU

Putative abrogation impacts of Ajwa seeds on oxidative damage, liver dysfunction and associated complications in rats exposed to carbon tetrachloride.

BACKGROUND: Industrial toxicants such as Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) are known to disrupt the oxidative-antioxidative balance, which generates excessive amounts of free radicals leading to chronic or acute liver damage. Natural antioxidants, including Ajwa, play an important role in protecting against hepatotoxicity. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study investigated the prophylactic impacts of ajwa seeds aqueous extract (ASE) against hepatic oxidative injury in rats induced by CCl4. Eighty male Wistar albino rats were equally assigned to eight groups: one group receive no treatment, four groups we

Central neuropathology of equine grass sickness.

Equine grass sickness (EGS) is an acquired disease of unknown aetiology affecting horses kept at grass. The disease is characterised by postganglionic sympathetic and parasympathetic neuronal pathology and is categorised as a dysautonomia. This study undertook a systematic examination of brain stem cranial nerve nuclei in 59 cases of EGS. Pathology consisting of neuronal chromatolysis was most consistently noted in the lower motor neurons of the general visceral efferent nucleus of CN III and X and the general somatic efferent nuclei of CN III, V, VII and XII. The prevalence of chromatolysis d

[An experimental study of the effect of an artichoke preparation on the activity of the sympathetic-adrenal system in carbon disulfide exposure].

Artichoke, a new Bulgarian preparation based on the plant Cynara scolymus, was tested for influence on sympatho-adrenal system (SAS) activity in experimental inhalation exposure to carbon disulfide. This chronic (six-month) inhalation experiment was done on Wistar albino rats of either sex. Activity of SAS was assessed through excretion of noradrenalin and adrenalin. Findings indicated a phasic SAS response depending on concentration and duration of carbon disulfide exposure. With exposure to 30 mg.m3, SAS activity was observed to decrease in the second month, followed by increase in the fourt

[Selenium, an essential and toxic element. Latin American data].

After a brief discussion of some of the aspects of importance, sources, deficiencies and excesses of selenium the great differences of ingestion between different countries are mentioned. Breast fed children from an area in Venezuela ingest 10 times the amount compared with children from Finland. Among sesame seed samples from 20 different countries used as Se indicators, the highest and the lowest values were found in those of Latin-American origin. With very few exceptions the highest and the lowest urinary and serum Se levels reported in the literature came from this region. The performance
