Effects of Occlusal Splints on Spinal Posture in Patients with Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review.

There is still a gap in the scientific knowledge on the linkage between craniofacial structure and spinal postural control in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients. This systematic review aimed to assess the role of occlusal splints on spinal posture of TMD patients. PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were systematically searched from inception until 5 January 2022 to identify observational studies with a longitudinal study design presenting: patients with diagnosis of TMD according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD); occlusal splint therapy as intervention…

Lack of the myotendinous junction marker col22a1 results in posture and locomotion disabilities in zebrafish.

The myotendinous junction (MTJ) is essential for the integrity of the musculoskeletal unit. Here, we show that gene ablation of the MTJ marker col22a1 in zebrafish results in MTJ dysfunction but with variable degrees of expression and distinct phenotypic classes. While most individuals reach adulthood with no overt muscle phenotype (class 1), a subset of the progeny displays severe movement impairment and die before metamorphosis (class 2). Yet all mutants display muscle weakness due to ineffective muscle force transmission that is ultimately detrimental for class-specific locomotion-related f

The impact of noise exposure and work posture on job stress in a food company.

BACKGROUND: In most food companies, workers are constantly exposed to non-standard levels of noise. Also, food production processes require intense manual labor and repetitive movements, which may result in musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Noise and awkward posture are considered as two important physical factors in the industrialized world, which can related to perceived stress. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted among food factory workers to investigate the impact of noise exposure and work posture on occupational stress. METHODS: A total of 200 workers were examined in this cross-sectio…

Adaptive Posture-Balance Cardiac Rehabilitation Exercise Significantly Improved Physical Tolerance in Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) requires more professional exercise modalities to improve the efficiency of treatment. Adaptive posture-balance cardiac rehabilitation exercise (APBCRE) is an emerging, balance-based therapy from clinical experience, but lacks evidence of validity. Our study aimed to observe and assess the rehabilitation effect of APBCRE on patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). All participants received one-month APBCRE therapy evenly three times per week and two assessments before and after APBCRE. Each assessment included cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), resting me…

Relationship between distension-contraction waveforms during esophageal peristalsis: effect of bolus volume, viscosity, and posture.

High-resolution esophageal manometry (HRM) in its current form assesses only the contraction phase of peristalsis. Degree of esophageal distension ahead of contraction is a surrogate of relaxation and can be measured from intraluminal esophageal impedance measurements. The characteristics of esophageal contractions, i.e., their amplitude, duration, velocity, and modulating factors, have been well studied. We studied the effect of bolus volume and viscosity and posture on swallow-induced distension and contraction and the temporal relationship between the two. HRM impedance recordings of 50 hea…

The association between awkward working posture and low back disorders in farmers: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Low back disorders (LBD) are the most common musculoskeletal problem among farmers, with higher prevalence than other occupations. Although studies of the general population have shown an association between LBD and awkward working posture, farmers have unique work context and exposures that may modify this relationship. This review aimed to 1) identify published research studies investigating posture as a risk factor for LBD in farmers/agricultural workers, and 2) determine the strength of the relationship between postural exposure and LBD risk of bias assessment. METHOD: Compreh…

An Extended Passive Motion Paradigm for Human-Like Posture and Movement Planning in Redundant Manipulators.

A major challenge in robotics and computational neuroscience is relative to the posture/movement problem in presence of kinematic redundancy. We recently addressed this issue using a principled approach which, in conjunction with nonlinear inverse optimization, allowed capturing postural strategies such as Donders' law. In this work, after presenting this general model specifying it as an extension of the Passive Motion Paradigm, we show how, once fitted to capture experimental postural strategies, the model is actually able to also predict movements. More specifically, the passive motion para…

Application of a novel spinal posture and motion measurement system in active and static sitting.

The quantification of work-related musculoskeletal risk factors is of great importance; however, only a few tools allow objective, unrestricted measurements of spinal posture and motion in workplaces. This study was performed to evaluate the applicability of the Epionics system in a sedentary workplace. The system is mobile and wireless and assesses lumbar lordosis, pelvic orientation and spinal motion, without restricting subjects in their movements. In total, 10 males were monitored while sitting for 2 h on static and dynamic office chairs and on an exercise ball, to evaluate the effect of d…

Effects of transporting an infant on the posture of women during walking and standing still.

We investigated the effects on women of carrying an infant in front, focusing on the pelvic and spinal posture and the displacement of the body's center of gravity. For such, we compared mothers to non-mothers not carrying anything or carrying the same load (a doll) and the mothers carrying their infants. Twenty mothers and 44 women who did not have children were analyzed for their movement and posture during walking and standing still with a motion capture system. Walking while carrying a load was slower and with a shorter stride length than while not carrying a load. The mothers' group walke…
