What Hispanic parents do to encourage and discourage 3-5 year old children to be active: a qualitative study using nominal group technique.

PURPOSE: Hispanic preschoolers are less active than their non-Hispanic peers. As part of a feasibility study to assess environmental and parenting influences on preschooler physical activity (PA) (Niños Activos), the aim of this study was to identify what parents do to encourage or discourage PA among Hispanic 3-5 year old children to inform the development of a new PA parenting practice instrument and future interventions to increase PA among Hispanic youth. METHODS: Nominal Group Technique (NGT), a structured multi-step group procedure, was used to elicit and prioritize responses from 10 gr

Reducing Caregiver Burden in First-Episode Psychosis: Effects of a Psychoeducational Pathway Led by an Advanced Practice Nurse-A Multicentre Stepped-Wedge Randomized Trial.

Family caregivers play a pivotal role in the recovery of people experiencing first-episode psychosis (FEP). However, they may suffer from high levels of psychological distress and lack access to structured support. Although international recommendations highlight the need for psychoeducational interventions for caregivers, their implementation in France remains limited. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a structured, multicomponent support pathway, coordinated by advanced practice nurses (APNs), for family caregivers of people with FEP. This multicentre, stepped-wedge (cluster with seq

Connect Coordination Victoria and the Establishment of a State-Wide Network of Family Carer Mental Health and Well-being Connect Centres: Family Carer Lived Experience Leadership Through Online Community Co-Design, Communities of Practice and Power Sharing.

BACKGROUND: This paper builds upon previous research in which we systematically identified the coordinating values of Connect Coordination Victoria: a non-government, family carer-led coordination body overseeing a network of tailored services for mental health family carers in Victoria, Australia. The four core values we identified were: connection, responsiveness, consistency and flexibility. Wanting to see if these values continued across additional data, led us to a second iteration of our initial findings. In this paper, we describe secondary findings related to Connect Coordination Victo

Combined Imagery/Physical Practice Yields Comparable Benefits to Physical Practice in Snare Drum Performance.

This study explored the effectiveness of combining motor imagery with physical practice in enhancing snare drum performance among trained percussionists. Motor imagery has promoted learning in related contexts such as sport but has yet to be applied in music training. Twenty-eight percussion majors were assigned to either a physical practice group or a combined imagery/physical practice group. Participants performed a novel snare drum excerpt while motion capture measured upper-limb movements prior to and following training. Temporal errors were also computed by comparing note onsets to the id

Practice Parameter for the Assessment and Treatment of Children and Adolescents With Reactive Attachment Disorder and Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder.

This Practice Parameter is a revision of a previous Parameter addressing reactive attachment disorder that was published in 2005. It reviews the current status of reactive attachment disorder (RAD) and disinhibited social engagement disorder (DESD) with regard to assessment and treatment. Attachment is a central component of social and emotional development in early childhood, and disordered attachment is defined by specific patterns of abnormal social behavior in the context of "insufficient care" or social neglect. Assessment requires direct observation of the child in the context of his or

CI therapy distribution: theory, evidence and practice.

Traditional rehabilitation for hemiplegia is not necessarily based on a supported theoretical foundation and some evidence questiones the efficacy of current practice. The uncertainty relating to underlying theories is a serious issue, henceforth there has been a move to base treatment strategies on scientific foundations which incorporate knowledge of human learning mechanisms and accompanying neurobiological processes. In this paper we argue that constraint induced movement therapy is a potentially very effective intervention that benefits from a strong theoretical grounding. It is demonstra

Obsessive-compulsive disorder: tools for recognizing its many expressions.

For a person with symptoms suggestive of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), inquire about a family history of OCD or other anxiety disorders, either of which increases the likelihood of a diagnosis of OCD. Keep in mind that, with children, symptoms suggestive of OCD may simply indicate developmentally appropriate rituals. Become familiar with the alternative methods of assessment to facilitate evaluation in your particular office setting. Consider OCD when a patient exhibits or complains of intrusive thoughts, anxiety-based avoidance of places or objects, excessive reassurance-seeking, or re

Prior experience as a moderator of disaster impact on anxiety symptoms in older adults.

As participants in a panel study, 234 older adults were interviewed before, as well as after, serious flooding occurred in southeastern Kentucky. Floods are not uncommon in this area, but these were more widespread than most, and resulted in both previously exposed and newly exposed subsamples of disaster victims. Flood impact was measured at both personal and community levels. With preflood symptoms controlled, there were modest flood effects on both trait anxiety and weather-specific distress in older adults without prior flood experience, but no flood effects in older adults who had been in

Improvement of visual acuity in partially and fully sighted subjects as a function of practice, feedback, and instructional techniques.

Three experiments were conducted to examine improvement of partially (20/200 or 6/60) and normally (20/20 or 6/6) sighted adults. Measures of resolution and vernier acuity were examined in the first two experiments to determine whether practice, feedback, and instructions would have differential effects on the degree of visual improvement achieved in a 20-min. testing session. The results indicated extensive visual work to be the important factor in the improvement of impaired vision. The third experiment compared monocular and binocular depth perception of individuals with unilateral optic at

A Different Way of Working: Embedding Clinical Psychology Placements in Third Sector Organisations Supporting People Experiencing Homelessness.

OBJECTIVES: People experiencing homelessness experience high levels of trauma and psychological distress, but rarely access or engage with formal mental health services. The National Framework for Inclusion Health highlights collaboration between the NHS and third sector organisations as essential for reducing health inequalities. Providing clinical placements in third sector organisations for clinical psychology trainees may offer a valuable route to addressing this gap, whilst providing a beneficial learning experience. METHODS: Qualitative semi-structured interviews with clinical psycholog

[Expected areas of impact of the disciplines medicine, psychology and physiotherapy in pain treatment : A survey among members of the professions].

BACKGROUND: Interdisciplinary multimodal pain treatment (IMPT) is an essential element in the treatment of people with chronic pain. Although IMST is defined in terms of content, it is evident that its practical design is very heterogeneous. This refers not only to the composition of the contents of the treatment but also to the concrete distribution of tasks among the professions involved. This article deals with the attribution of the effect of the activities of the three professional groups involved in IMPT: medicine, psychology and physiotherapy. The aim of this work is to examine how the

Specific psychological therapies versus other therapies or no treatment for severe and enduring anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa is a psychological condition characterised by self-starvation and fear or wait gain or other body image disturbance. The first line of treatment is specific psychological therapy; however, there is no consensus on best practice for treating people who develop severe and enduring anorexia nervosa (SEAN). Notably, there is no universal definition of SEAN. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of specific psychological therapies for severe and enduring anorexia nervosa compared with other specific therapies, non-specific therapies, no treatment/waiting list,

Decisions under uncertainty: A statistical framework for evaluating practical relevance in interval-based hypothesis testing.

Psychological researchers are increasingly encouraged to move beyond a narrow focus on detecting statistically significant effects that differ from zero. To interpret findings more meaningfully, best practices emphasize evaluating effect magnitude to determine whether it is practically meaningful or negligible. This requires specifying a smallest effect size of interest and conducting interval-based hypothesis tests. Although these approaches improve current practice by explicitly accounting for effect sizes, interval-based hypothesis tests can yield inconclusive results, leaving uncertainty a

Behavior Change.

Changing behavior is a central challenge in domains ranging from health and finance to voting and education. Drawing on decades of research from psychology and related fields, this review synthesizes high-quality evidence-particularly randomized controlled trials with objective behavioral outcomes-to identify effective strategies for changing behavior. We propose a unifying three-phase framework that conceptualizes behavior change as a process involving: (a) building motivation, (b) following through, and (c) forming durable habits. For each phase, we identify key psychological challenges and

Management of Childhood Obesity.

Obesity is characterized by an excess accumulation of adipose tissue, independent of its distribution or function, and is associated with organ dysfunction and a broad range of metabolic and cardiac complications. Nutritional, environmental, behavioral, genetic, psychological, and metabolic factors contribute to obesity. It is associated with many secondary complications, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, reduced quality of life, and psychological illnesses. For practical purposes, childhood obesity can be classif

Remote but Together: Online Group Supervision During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic's impact on higher education, particularly the shift to distance learning, is examined in this study. Psychology graduate students' subjective experiences of online group supervision are explored, and the pandemic's influence on their learning is analyzed. Thematic analysis and computer-assisted qualitative data analysis of 14 student interviews reveal three distinct themes: (a) the presence of complex and ambivalent emotions; (b) significant influences of the online setting's characteristics on student experiences, including formal and limited communication, disembodied
