The alpha 6/beta 4 complex is a member of the integrin family of adhesion receptors. It is found on a variety of epithelial cell types, but is most strongly expressed on stratified squamous epithelia. Fluorescent antibody staining of human epidermis suggests that the beta 4 subunit is strongly localized to the basal region showing a similar distribution to that of the 230-kD bullous pemphigoid antigen. Pancreatic islet cytosol contains a calcium-calmodulin dependent protein kinase that can mediate the phosphorylation of an endogenous protein that has an Mr of 57 000, as well as exogenous muscle pyruvate kinase (subunit Mr, 57 000). The prevalence of three precipitating antibodies to mitochondria A (M-A), mitochondria B (M-B), and mitochondria C (M-C), reacting with the antigens in the mitochondrial fraction of sonicated rat liver was studied in Japanese patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and other liver diseases. Within the drainage area of the Central Hospital for Diseases of Heart and Lungs at Bad Berka/ GDR 337 persons (210 male, 127 female) with alveolitis and pulmonary fibrosis were observed during a period of 17 years (1963-1979). The average-age of the patient was 43.5 (11-70) years. The mean duration of the illness was to 9 years. The time elapsing up to the confirmation of the diagnosis amounts to approximately 4.35 years. Mycological and serological studies were carried out as part of a survey of respiratory disease in Scottish maltworkers. 70% of stained sputum smears from 574 workers showed the presence of higher plant cells and/or myclelia, and the spores of common environmental fungi. A newly available low voltage counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) system for the detection of HB Ag (Hapindex, Ortho Diagnostics) was compared with a conventional CIEP method used at this laboratory. A total of 1216 sera were tested. The Hapindex system was found to be at least as sensitive as the conventional CIEP. No false positives were found in this series.
