Prevalence of problem gambling among the prison population in Hamburg, Germany.

Despite the increasing research in gambling, the prevalence of problem gambling in the criminal justice population is rarely investigated, especially in Europe. Given the lack in knowledge the Hamburg study aimed at identifying the prevalence of problem gambling in the whole regional prison population. For this purpose two major approaches were used: a 10 months long-term screening of pre-trial detainees at prison entry through the Lie/Bet Questionnaire, and full-scale survey of inmate personnel records of prisoners being in prison on a defined reporting date. Based on 792 valid screening file

[The prison of Jerez de los Caballeros (Badajoz) in the 19th century].

This article considers the situation of prisoners in Spanish jails, taking the circumstances of the inmates at the prison of Jerez de los Caballeros as a particular example. Documents from the Jerez Municipal Historical Archives were studied along with other contemporary and more current publications. The results show that the conditions of the buildings bordered on the ruinous, the facilities were in poor condition or unavailable and health and hygiene were practically inhumane. Pathologies of the prisoners posed a threat to the general population, as there was the risk of outbreaks of epidem

Developing and Implementing a New Prison-Based Buprenorphine Treatment Program.

Research suggests that buprenorphine treatment may be a promising intervention for incarcerated individuals with heroin addiction histories. However, its implementation varies from corrections-based methadone because of unique challenges regarding dosing, administration, and regulation. Describing the first randomized clinical trial of prison-initiated buprenorphine treatment in the United States, this manuscript focuses on how these obstacles were overcome through collaboration among correctional, treatment, and research personnel. Building on the present authors' work in developing prison-ba

Altered emotional decision-making in prisoners with borderline personality disorder.

Previous studies have identified neuropsychological deficits in individuals with antisocial personality disorder and/or psychopathy. Few studies have examined neuropsychological functioning in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), and no studies have yet investigated cognitive and emotional function in male prisoners with BPD. In this study, we compared the risky decision-making of 17 participants with a history of serious violent or sexual offenses and a diagnosis of DSM-IV BPD with that of 17 participants with similar offending histories but personality disorders other than

Predicting retention in a residential drug treatment alternative to prison program.

One hundred and fifty felony drug offenders diverted from prison to community-based, residential drug treatment alternative to prison program completed a comprehensive interview as part of a longitudinal study. Treatment completion predictors were sought examining intake data (demographics, family, social, employment, medical, psychological, criminal, sexual behavior, drug use and treatment histories). Logistic regression results found completers had more social conformity and close friends, and less need for employment counseling, felony drug convictions, drug dealing income, and unprotected

Transsexual orientation in HIV risk behaviours in an adult male prison.

The present study examined the consequences of being a self-reported transsexual male and HIV risk behaviours in a state penal system. The specific research question was whether or not sexual orientation of inmates influences the level to which they evidence HIV risk behaviours. A total of 153 participants volunteered to participate in the study of which 31 described themselves as being transsexual. Based on risk ratios and using transsexual inmates (TIs) as the reference group, they were 13.7 times more likely to have a main sex partner while in prison [95% CI=5.28, 35.58]. Moreover, TIs were

[The relationship between the burnout and self esteem among prison wardens].

Our aim in this research has been to show the link existing between "burn-out" and self-esteem. Several studies have outlined that link without actually bringing is to light. The present study has been carried out among prison officers. The concept had actually never been applied to such a population and has rather been used for social assistance jobs, such as social workers, tutors or teachers. A "burn-out" questionnaire has been made so as to estimate how tired the staff were. Maslach's test (1982) has revealed difficult to use here. Coopersmith's SEI has been used to estimate people's self-
