The effects of rumination and distraction on over-general autobiographical memory retrieval during social problem solving.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the effects of rumination and distraction on over-general autobiographical memory (AM) retrieval during social problem solving (SPS), as well as SPS performance in terms of means and effectiveness. DESIGN AND METHODS: After undergoing a rumination or distraction manipulation, dysphoric and non-dysphoric participants performed a SPS task and reported the memories retrieved during SPS. RESULTS: The dysphoric ruminators performed significantly less effectively on the SPS task than the other groups. However, the dysphoric ruminators did not differ from the dysphoric distr

Cognitive and Behavioral Outcomes of Snoring Among Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Snoring is central to sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), which arises from nocturnal upper airway resistance. Habitual snoring is associated with cognitive and behavioral problems in young children, but less is known about these associations in adolescents. OBJECTIVE: To assess the longitudinal associations of snoring with cognition and problem behaviors among adolescents. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was a secondary analysis of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study dataset (release 5.0), which enrolled 11 875 children and a parent or care…

Neural response to monetary loss among youth with disruptive behavior disorders and callous-unemotional traits in the ABCD study.

Etiological models highlight reduced punishment sensitivity as a core risk factor for disruptive behavior disorders (DBD) and callous-unemotional (CU) traits. The current study examined neural sensitivity to the anticipation and receipt of loss, one key aspect of punishment sensitivity, among youth with DBD, comparing those with and without CU traits. Data were obtained from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD)SM Study (N = 11,874; Mage = 9.51; 48% female). Loss-related fMRI activity during the monetary incentive delay task was examined across 16 empirically-derived a priori b

[Differential Stability and Interrater-Dependencies in the Assessment of Psychopathological Symptoms: Longitudinal Analyses Based on the SDQ in Children with and without Specific Learning Disabilities].

Differential Stability and Interrater-Dependencies in the Assessment of Psychopathological Symptoms: Longitudinal Analyses Based on the SDQ in Children with and without Specific Learning Disabilities A widely used open access instrument for screening of internalising and externalising problem behaviour is the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). For the use of the SDQ in clinical practice, information about its differential validity and applicability for follow-up assessments is relevant. Therefore, the aim was to study the SDQ regarding differential stability in the repeatedly coll

Specific cortical and subcortical alterations for reactive and proactive aggression in children and adolescents with disruptive behavior.

Maladaptive aggression, as present in conduct disorder (CD) and, to a lesser extent, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), has been associated with structural alterations in various brain regions, such as ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), amygdala, insula and ventral striatum. Although aggression can be subdivided into reactive and proactive subtypes, no neuroimaging studies have yet investigated if any structural brain alterations are associated with either of the subtypes specifically. Here we investigated associations between aggression subtypes, CU tra

Association With Deviant Peers Across Adolescence: Subtypes, Developmental Patterns, and Long-Term Outcomes.

Indices of deviant peer group involvement are inconsistent and confound type, frequency, and severity of deviant peer behaviors. These measurement approaches thus obfuscate potential meaningful differences in deviant peer involvement in terms of subtypes, developmental patterns, and long-term outcomes. The current study employed latent class analysis to derive subtypes of deviant peer involvement and examined relations to substance use disorder in adulthood, a common outcome of deviant peer involvement. Youth (76% Caucasian) completed assessments across four time points: ages 10-12 years (Time

Randomized effectiveness Trial of the Family Check-Up versus Internet-delivered Parent Training (iComet) for Families of Children with Conduct Problems.

We investigated the effectiveness of the Family Check-Up (FCU) and an Internet-based parent-training program (iComet), along with moderators and mediators of outcome. Families (N = 231) with a child with conduct problems were randomized to one of the conditions for 10 weeks of treatment. The drop-out rate was significantly higher in the iComet (39%) compared to FCU (23%). At post-treatment, both conditions resulted in significant improvement, based on parent-report, but no significant interaction between time and condition, with the exception of conduct problem subscale of the Strengths and Di

Internet gaming disorder in adolescence: Psychological characteristics of a clinical sample.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) has become a topic of increasing research interest since its inclusion in Section 3 of the DSM-5. Given the lack of clinical studies concerning IGD, exploring the characteristics of clinical samples with IGD will help to delineate the gaming disorder construct and inform future treatment studies. METHODS: Data collection consisted of clinical interviews comprising 31 male adolescents diagnosed with IGD. Alongside the clinical interviews, the participants were administered a battery of psychometric tests assessing the following: IGD, personal

Story worlds as social armor: Novel reading habits attenuate the autistic-traits to social anxiety pathway.

OBJECTIVE: Autistic traits are common in school-age children and frequently co-occur with social anxiety, which can precipitate behavioral problems. Guided by Social Motivation Theory and the Reading-Empathy framework, we tested whether children's self-directed novel-reading habits (NRH) buffer the pathway from autistic symptoms to behavioral problems via social anxiety. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was completed by 1240 pupils aged 8-15 years from mainstream schools in Luzhou, China. Measures included the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Social Anxiety Scale for Children, Child Behavior C

An Individual Participant Data Meta-analysis: Behavioral Treatments for Children and Adolescents With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Behavioral interventions are well established treatments for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, insight into moderators of treatment outcome is limited. METHOD: We conducted an individual participant data meta-analysis (IPDMA), including data of randomized controlled behavioral intervention trials for individuals with ADHD <18 years of age. Outcomes were symptoms of ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder (CD) and impairment. Moderators investigated were symptoms and impairment severity, medication use, age, IQ, sex, soci

The Same or Different? Convergence of Skin Gambling and Other Gambling Among Children.

There is increasing attention on the introduction of gambling-like practices within video games. Termed convergence, this has been explored from the viewpoint of the product, examining similarities in game/gambling mechanics. Understanding convergence of practice is essential to map the epidemiology of these behaviours, especially among children. This paper focuses on the betting of skins within video games to explore co-occurrence with other forms of gambling among British children aged 11-16. Analysing the British Youth Gambling Survey showed that 39% of children who bet on skins in the past

Parenting Stress through the Lens of Different Clinical Groups: a Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis.

Research has demonstrated an association between parenting stress and child behavior problems, and suggested levels of parenting stress are higher among parents of children at risk for behavior problems, such as those with autism and developmental delay (ASD/DD). The goal of the present study was to conduct a systematic review of parenting stress and child behavior problems among different clinical groups (i.e., ASD/DD, chronic illness, with or at-risk for behavioral and/or mood disorders). We also examined demographic and methodological variables as moderators and differences in overall level

Environmental correlates of gambling behavior in urban adolescents.

The present study considered the relation between adolescent gambling behavior and the perceived environment, the component of Jessor and Jessor's (1977) Problem Behavior Theory that assesses the ways that adolescents perceive the attitudes and behaviors of parents and peers. The predominantly African-American sample included 188 sophomores from two urban public high schools. Using the South Oaks Gambling Screen-Revised for Adolescents to assess gambling risk, rates of both at-risk (20.7%) and problem (12.8%) gambling were found to be high. Boys displayed more gambling problems than did girls.…

Digital Health Delivery of Parenting Skills to Improve Conduct Problems in Middle School Youth Across Two Distinct Randomized Trials.

This study evaluated direct and indirect effects of the Family Check-Up Online (FCU-O) across two distinct randomized trials with middle school youth and families. The FCU-O is a digital health adaptation of the Family Check-Up that is delivered in a brief, online format with supportive coaching. The FCU-O was delivered to parents of middle school youth with a focus on targeting both proximal and distal outcomes that impact the development of conduct problems, including a range of parenting skills, effortful control, and youth emotional problems. Participants were primary caregivers of childre

Examining Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome in Relation to Social Problem Solving in Young Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS), previously referred to as sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT), is characterized by symptoms such as excessive daydreaming, mental confusion, and hypoactivity. CDS symptoms are associated with emotional, social, and daily life impairments. The way in which one solves problems in their daily life is associated with experiences of further problems, such that maladaptive problem-solving can lead to further physical and psychological problems. However, there is limited information on how CDS symptoms are associated with problem solving. The current stud

Latent Transitions of Census-level Deprivation and Network Analysis of Conduct Problem Behaviours.

Conduct problems are more prevalent in neighbourhoods that have a vulnerable structure (e.g., high neighbourhood-level deprivation) and disarranged interpersonal characteristics (e.g., low social cohesion and informal social control at the neighbourhood level). However, as an indicator of neighbourhood structure, neighbourhood deprivation has typically not been assessed longitudinally and solely based on neighbourhood-level socioeconomic status rather than a wide variety of census-level deprivation indicators. Also, few studies have examined which CD behaviours (e.g., stealing) interplay with

Intellectual and Behavioral Phenotypes of Smith-Magenis Syndrome: Comparisons between Individuals with a 17p11.2 Deletion and Pathogenic RAI1 Variant.

AIM: Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a 17p11.2 deletion or pathogenic variant in the RAI1 gene. SMS is associated with developmental delay, intellectual disability (ID), and major sleep and behavioral disturbances. To explore how genetic variants may affect intellectual functioning and behavior, we compared intellectual and behavioral phenotypes between individuals with a 17p11.2 deletion and pathogenic RAI1 variant. METHOD: We reviewed available clinical records from individuals (aged 0-45 years) with SMS, ascertained through a Dutch multi

Parenting boys with conduct problems and callous-unemotional traits: parent and child perspectives.

Parenting children with conduct problems (CP) is challenging, yet very little research has examined parenting using both quantitative and qualitative methods, from the perspective of the child and their parent/caregiver, and separately for those with high vs. low levels of callous-unemotional traits (HCU vs. LCU). One hundred and forty-six boys aged 11-16 [Typically developing (TD) n = 31; CP/HCU n = 35; CP/LCU n = 35] and their parents/caregivers completed the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire and provided a written qualitative statement describing their respective experiences of parenting/bein
