Exploring the Relation Between Teacher Factors and Student Growth in Early Writing.

Data from a small randomized control trial of teachers' use of Data-Based Instruction (DBI) for early writing were analyzed to determine the influence of teacher knowledge, skills, and treatment fidelity on student Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) slope. Participants included 11 elementary grade teachers who delivered intensive intervention in early writing and their students (n = 31), all identified as either at risk for or with disabilities that affect their writing. Teachers received professional development and ongoing coaching to support the implementation of DBI for improving their stu

The invisible breast cancer: Experience does not protect against inattentional blindness to clinically relevant findings in radiology.

Retrospectively obvious events are frequently missed when attention is engaged in another task-a phenomenon known as inattentional blindness. Although the task characteristics that predict inattentional blindness rates are relatively well understood, the observer characteristics that predict inattentional blindness rates are largely unknown. Previously, expert radiologists showed a surprising rate of inattentional blindness to a gorilla photoshopped into a CT scan during lung-cancer screening. However, inattentional blindness rates were higher for a group of naïve observers performing the same

A Pilot Study Exploring the Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Analogue Measures of Pilot Competencies.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep loss can result in cognitive, motor, and neurobehavioral impairments. In an aviation context, this can cause a serious threat to flight safety. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the effects of 24-h sleep deprivation on mood, fatigue, and airline pilot competencies. METHODS: Seven subjects attended two 24-h testing periods, one with an 8-h sleep opportunity, and the other with no sleep opportunity (i.e., sleep deprivation). Subjects were required to complete a battery of mood, fatigue, and analogue measures of pilot competency tasks every 8 h (0 h, 8 h, 16 h, 24 h)

The impaired and/or disabled anesthesiologist.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Impairment and/or disability resulting from any of a number of etiologies will afflict a significant number of anesthesiologists at some point during their career. The impaired anesthesiologist can be difficult to identify and challenging to manage. Questions will arise as to if, how, and when colleagues, family members, or friends should intercede if significant impairment is suspected. This review will examine the common sources of impairment among anesthesiologists and the professional implications of these conditions. We will discuss the obligations of an anesthesiologist

Who really knows their patients' penicillin adverse drug reaction status? A cross-sectional survey.

This cross-sectional survey of patients with adverse drug reactions (ADR) to penicillin and their treating doctor, nurse and pharmacist was undertaken to identify the extent of healthcare workers (HCW) awareness of their patients' ADR, and antibiotic use in hospital. There were 23 (38%) doctors, 53 (87%) nurses and 40 (66%) pharmacists who were aware of their patient's penicillin ADR, despite more than half of their patients receiving antibiotics. Interventions encouraging 'double checking' may improve antibiovigilance.

Complicated grief in children--the perspectives of experienced professionals.

A total of 39 very experienced clinicians and researchers worldwide responded to a survey consisting of both structured and open-ended questions on complicated grief in children. The questions assessed their opinion on: a) what constitutes complicated grief in children; b) whether to develop a diagnosis for children as suggested for adults and, if so, would adult criteria be sufficient for children; and c) other aspects of normal and complicated grief in children. The analyses showed that the professionals struggled with defining complicated grief in children, although they agreed that the maj

How good are we at implementing evidence to support the management of birth related perineal trauma? A UK wide survey of midwifery practice.

BACKGROUND: The accurate assessment and appropriate repair of birth related perineal trauma require high levels of skill and competency, with evidence based guideline recommendations available to inform UK midwifery practice. Implementation of guideline recommendations could reduce maternal morbidity associated with perineal trauma, which is commonly reported and persistent, with potential to deter women from a future vaginal birth. Despite evidence, limited attention is paid to this important aspect of midwifery practice. We wished to identify how midwives in the UK assessed and repaired peri

Expertise and gambling: using type 2 signal detection theory to investigate differences between regular gamblers and nongamblers.

This paper presents an experimental investigation into how individuals make decisions under uncertainty when faced with different payout structures in the context of gambling. Type 2 signal detection theory was utilized to compare sensitivity to bias manipulations between regular nonproblem gamblers and nongamblers in a novel probability-based gambling task. The results indicated that both regular gamblers and nongamblers responded to the changes of rewards for correct responses (Experiment 1) and penalties for errors (Experiment 2) in setting their gambling criteria, but that regular gamblers

Neophyte facilitator experiences of interprofessional education: implications for faculty development.

The facilitation of learners from different professional groups requires a range of interprofessional knowledge and skills (e.g. an understanding of possible sources of tension between professions) in addition to those that are more generic, such as how to manage a small group of learners. The development and delivery of interprofessional education (IPE) programs tends to rely on a small cohort of facilitators who have typically gained expertise through 'hands-on' involvement in facilitating IPE and through mentorship from more experienced colleagues. To avoid burn-out and to meet a growing de

Rethinking health care cultures in community services: Towards an operational five-criteria framework.

Calls for cultural change in health services often remain confined to managerial or ethical discourse, lacking critical depth and operational clarity. This article develops the concept of health care cultures (HCCs) as an analytical category in its own right: dynamic configurations of power, knowledge and practice that actively shape how care is conceived, delivered and governed. Drawing on a Gramscian framework, feminist care theory, and the literature on structural competency, I conceptualise HCCs as sites of tension between hegemonic and subaltern forms of knowledge and practice. This refra
