Problems and prospects of metabolomic studies in the alteration of the gut microbiome.

The review summarizes existing knowledge on the relationship between certain diseases and alteration (degeneration) of the intestinal microbiome. We consider major microbial metabolites firmly recognized as signaling molecules acting in communication between the microbiome and the host organism. These include short-chain fatty acids, bile acids, amines, amino acids, and their metabolites. Special attention is paid to metabolomic studies of the microbiome in chronic kidney diseases, in particular, immunoglobulin A nephropathy. The arguments supporting a concept of the microbiome of blood, previ

Prediction of retinopathy risk: A prospective cohort study in China.

AIM: To identify risk factors for retinopathy and to develop a nomogram for individualised risk prediction in a multi-ethnic Chinese cohort. METHODS: Data were derived from the SENSIBLE-Cohort, excluding participants with retinopathy at baseline. Two nomograms were constructed: one using baseline data only (Baseline), and one incorporating baseline and follow-up data (Combination). Predictor selection involved Cox regression, Boruta, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), and recursive feature elimination (RFE). Model performance was evaluated using Harrell's C-index, confus

Residential environment and risk of chronic diseases: A prospective study.

The impact of green-blue spaces on human health remains inconclusive, and the current understanding of disease spectrum associated with these spaces is still incomplete. We aimed to comprehensively investigate the relationship between residential environment and chronic diseases, while also examining the potential mediating role of air pollutants in these relationships. Using data from the UK Biobank, we created a residential environment score (RES) based on four types of green-blue spaces: natural environment, green space, domestic garden, and water area, with scores assigned according to the

The Role of Immune Semaphorins in Sepsis-A Prospective Cohort Study.

In sepsis, a balanced pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory response results in the bacterial clearance and resolution of inflammation, promoting clinical recovery and survival. Semaphorins, a large family of secreted and membrane-bound glycoproteins, are newly recognized biomarkers and therapeutic targets in immunological and neoplastic disorders. Although semaphorins might also be a crucial part of host defense responses to infection, their role in sepsis is yet to be determined. This study aimed to analyze the association of serum semaphorin concentrations with sepsis severity and outcomes
