Dietary exposure to lambda-cyhalothrin induces intestinal damage in chickens via oxidative stress and gut microbiota dysbiosis.

Lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT), a widely used pyrethroid insecticide for ectoparasite control in poultry and sanitation pest management, poses health risks to humans and animals despite its broad application. While LCT's intestinal toxicity has been underexplored, this study innovatively highlights dose-dependent differences in its effects through a novel chicken exposure model. Employing histological analysis, gene expression profiling, oxidative stress assays, and 16S rRNA sequencing, we systematically assessed varying LCT doses on chicken intestines. Results demonstrated pronounced dose-dependent

Copy number variants underlie major selective sweeps in insecticide resistance genes in Anopheles arabiensis.

To keep ahead of the evolution of resistance to insecticides in mosquitoes, national malaria control programmes must make use of a range of insecticides, both old and new, while monitoring resistance mechanisms. The outdoor-biting malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis is of increasing concern for malaria transmission because it is apparently less susceptible to many indoor control interventions, yet knowledge of its mechanisms of resistance remains limited. Furthermore, comparatively little is known in general about resistance to non-pyrethroid insecticides such as pirimiphos-methyl (PM), which

Prenatal exposure to fenvalerate causes depressive-like behavior in adulthood by inhibiting brain-derived 5-HT synthesis.

The developmental toxicity of fenvalerate, a representative pyrethroid insecticide, is well documented. The present study aimed to explore whether prenatal exposure to fenvalerate causes depression-like behavior in adulthood. Pregnant mice were orally administrated with either corn oil or fenvalerate (2 or 20 mg/kg) during pregnancy. Depressive-like behaviors were assessed by tail suspension test (TST), forced swim test (FST) and sucrose preference test (SPT). Immobility times in TST and FST were increased in offspring whose mothers were exposed to fenvalerate throughout pregnancy. By contrast

Deltamethrin exposure caused renal inflammation and renal fibrosis via upregulating endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated TXNDC5 level in mice.

Deltamethrin (DLM) is a type II pyrethroid insecticide that is extensively applied to agriculture, veterinary medicine and livestock pest control. Excessive accumulation of DLM in the body can lead to nephrotoxicity, but the precise toxic mechanism remains obscure. Therefore, we established in vivo models of DLM-exposed mice for 30 days and in vitro models of DLM-exposed renal tubular epithelial cells of mice. The results revealed adverse effects on renal function in mice exposed to excessive DLM, manifested as endoplasmic reticulum (ER) swelling, local inflammatory infiltration in renal tissu

The epidemiological benefit of pyrethroid-pyrrole insecticide treated nets against malaria: an individual-based malaria transmission dynamics modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide treated nets (ITNs) are the most important malaria prevention tool in Africa but the rise of pyrethroid resistance in mosquitoes is likely impeding control. WHO has recommended a novel pyrethroid-pyrrole ITN following evidence of epidemiological benefit in two cluster-randomised, controlled trials (CRTs). It remains unclear how effective more costly pyrethroid-pyrrole ITNs are compared with other tools, or whether they should be deployed when budgets are limited. We aimed to compare the epidemiological impact and cost-effectiveness of the mass distribution of pyrethroid

Environmental risk assessment of pesticides currently applied in Ghana.

Registration of pesticides for use in Ghana is based on prospective environmental risk assessment (ERA) to assess the risks of future pesticide use on the environment. The present study evaluated whether pesticides currently used by Ghanaian farmers may harm the aquatic and terrestrial environment under day-to-day farm practice by performing a 1st tier ERA for terrestrial and aquatic environment and a 2nd tier ERA for the aquatic environment using existing scenarios and models. Results of the 1st tier risk assessment indicated that in the investigated regions in south Ghana, many pesticides mi

Comparing alpha-cypermethrin induced dose/gender-dependent responses of lizards in hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity in a food chain.

Pesticides are proposed as one reason for the worldwide decline in the reptile. Effects of pesticides on food intake and organ toxicity could affect wildlife populations dynamics. To explore the hepatotoxicity of alpha-cypermethrin (ACP) in reptiles, we designed a tri-trophic food chain with three concentrations (0, 2, and 20 mg/kgwet weight). Although the enzymes changes were similar between male and female lizards, the significant variations in anti-oxidative enzymes' activities, lactic dehydrogenase activities and acetylcholine esterase activities in liver and kidney suggesting that oxidati

Daily Variations in the Expression of Genes Related to Insecticide Resistance in the Chagas Disease Vector Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Pyrethroid resistance has been detected in Triatoma infestans, which in part has been attributed to increased oxidative metabolism of the insecticide by cytochrome P450s. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR) catalyzes electron transfer from NADPH to all known cytochrome P450s. In this study, the expression of the CPR gene at transcriptional level was determined in different tissues and two life stages. The expression patterns showed differences in the tissues and stages studied, suggesting differential metabolic requirements. On the other hand, to

Development and application of a tri-allelic PCR assay for screening Vgsc-L1014F kdr mutations associated with pyrethroid and organochlorine resistance in the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus.

BACKGROUND: Culex quinquefasciatus has a widespread distribution across tropical and sub-tropical regions, and plays an important role in the transmission of vector-borne diseases of public health importance, including lymphatic filariasis (LF) and multiple arboviruses. Increased resistance to insecticides threatens the efficacy and sustainability of insecticide-based anti-vector interventions which mitigate the burden of mosquito transmitted diseases in endemic regions. In C. quinquefasciatus two non-synonymous voltage gated sodium channel (Vgsc) variants, both resulting in a leucine to pheny

Pyrethroid pesticide exposure and hematological cancer: epidemiological, biological and molecular evidence.

Pyrethroid insecticides are commonly used worldwide. The chronic effects of these compounds are of concern given that epidemiological studies have suggested an association with hematological cancer, particularly in children. However, the biological evidence at molecular and cellular levels is limited. A review on the molecular and cellular effects of pyrethroids is helpful to guide the study of the biological plausibility of the association of pyrethroids with hematological cancer. We reviewed studies suggesting that pyrethroids are genotoxic, induce genetic rearrangements, alter gene expressi

Laboratory and field survival of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on Bt and non-Bt maize and its susceptibility to insecticides.

BACKGROUND: Field-evolved resistance of fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith), has been reported to Bt maize technologies in Brazil. The control failures of FAW by Bt maize increased the use of insecticides for their control. However, no information is available on the interaction between resistant FAW and their response to insecticides. Here, we evaluated the survival of FAW strains on Bt and non-Bt maize in laboratory and field conditions, and their susceptibility to insecticides. RESULTS: In the laboratory, resistant FAW larvae reared on Bt and non-Bt maize showed a similar su

Critical time window of fenvalerate-induced fetal intrauterine growth restriction in mice.

Fenvalerate (FEN), a representative type II pyrethroid, is a widely used pyrethroid insecticide and a potential environmental contaminant. Several studies demonstrated that gestational FEN exposure induced intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). However, the critical time window of FEN-induced fetal IUGR remains obscure. The present study aimed to identify the critical window of FEN-induced fetal IUGR. Pregnant mice were administered corn oil or FEN (20 mg/kg) by gavage daily at the early gestational stage (GD0-GD6), middle gestational stage (GD7-GD12) or late gestational stage (GD13-GD17). Th

Changes in malaria vector bionomics and transmission patterns in the equatorial forest region of Cameroon between 2000 and 2017.

BACKGROUND: Increased use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) over the last decade has considerably improved the control of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is still a paucity of data on the influence of LLIN use and other factors on mosquito bionomics in different epidemiological foci. The objective of this study was to provide updated data on the evolution of vector bionomics and malaria transmission patterns in the equatorial forest region of Cameroon over the period 2000-2017, during which LLIN coverage has increased substantially. METHODS: The study was conducted in Ol

Resistance to commonly used insecticides and phosphine fumigant in red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) in Pakistan.

The red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) is an important pest of date palms in many regions of the world. This paper reports the first survey of insecticide resistance in field populations of R. ferrugineus in Pakistan which were collected from seven date palm growing areas across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) provinces, Pakistan. The resistance was assessed by the diet incorporation method against the formulated commonly used chemical insecticides profenophos, imidacloprid, chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, spinosad, lambda-cyhalothrin and a fumigant phosphine. The investigation of the pyrethroid insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT)-affected Ca2+ homeostasis and -activated Ca2+-associated mitochondrial apoptotic pathway in normal human astrocytes: The evaluation of protective effects of BAPTA-AM (a selective Ca2+ chelator).

Exposure to insecticides has been found to have deleterious effects on human health. Lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT), a mixture of isomers of cyhalothrin, is a pyrethroid insecticide routinely used in pest control programs. LCT was reported to cause neurotoxic effects in various models. However, the mechanism of underlying effect of LCT on cytotoxicity in normal human brain cells is still elusive. This study examined whether LCT affected Ca2+ homeostasis and Ca2+-related physiology in Gibco® Human Astrocytes (GHA cells), and explored whether BAPTA-AM (1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N'N'-tetraaceti

Can fractal methods applied to video tracking detect the effects of deltamethrin pesticide or mercury on the locomotion behavior of shrimps?

Shrimps can accumulate environmental toxicants and suffer behavioral changes. However, methods to quantitatively detect changes in the behavior of these shrimps are still needed. The present study aims to verify whether mathematical and fractal methods applied to video tracking can adequately describe changes in the locomotion behavior of shrimps exposed to low concentrations of toxic chemicals, such as 0.15µgL-1 deltamethrin pesticide or 10µgL-1 mercuric chloride. Results showed no change after 1min, 4, 24, and 48h of treatment. However, after 72 and 96h of treatment, both the linear methods

Agricultural pesticides and veterinary substances in Uruguayan beeswax.

Over the last decade, Uruguay has expanded and intensified its rainfed crop production. This process has affected beekeeping in several ways: for example, by reducing the space available. This has increased the density of apiaries, the risk of varroosis and acaricide use. Additionally, the dominance of no-tillage crops has increased the frequencies of application and of loads of pesticides in regions where such crops share the land with beekeeping and honey production. Therefore, the exposure of bees to xenobiotics (agricultural pesticides and veterinary products) has increased in line with po
