[Acute skin reactions in rats after irradiation with reactor neutrons].

The paper is devoted to a study of acute radiation reactions of the depilated thigh skin of outbred rats after their irradiation at various doses with gamma quanta and neutrons of a BR-10 reactor with the mean energy of 0.85 MeV. A scale, developed for the assessment of a degree of severity of radiation reactions permitted quantitative interpretation of the obtained results. The RBE of neutron irradiation was 4.2.

Late sequelae of superficial irradiation.

Superficial irradiation results in well recognized late sequelae including not only sclerosis and atrophy of skin and subcutaneous tissue, but also the development of benign and malignant tumors of skin and adjacent structures. The long latency between irradiation and its late effects allowed the early uncontrolled use of radiation treatment for benign conditions. The subsequent recognition of the causal relationship between tumors and previous irradiation has restricted its use to more appropriate purposes, although it is possible that it is still overused in some areas of dermatologic practi

Effects of topically-applied olive oil on the response of hamster skin to single or multiple doses of 230kV X-rays.

The effects of topically-applied olive oil on the response of hamster skin to single or multiple doses of X-rays has been studied. The olive oil was applied either 15 min or 1 hour before the radiation exposures. The treatment did not alter the temporal pattern of development and recovery from the radiation injury. For single exposers, olive oil did not alter the 1- to 30-day average skin response. However, when it was administered at each treatment when three radiation fractions were given over a 4-day interval (3 fractions/4 days), a significant increase in the amount of dose recovered was f

Morhea-form basal cell carcinomas of the canthi.

Basal cell carcinoma is not a single entity, but a lesion of protean morphology. In treating basal cell carcinomas, treatment should be correlated with the histopathology of the tumor. Attention has been called to the aggressive infiltrating properties of morphea-form lesions. Morphea-form basal cell carcinomas should not be treated with radiotherapy. Surgery with frozen section control is advocated as the treatment of choice and the value of permanent sections has been stressed. Large defects should be covered with a skin graft.

[Mouth opening limitations due to soft tissue lesions].

Mouth opening limitations following on soft tissue lesions are subdivided according to aetiology into collagen disease connectival lesions, cutaneous and mucosa lesions consequent on the action of physical agents and, finally, cicatricial lesions of the cheeks and lips as a result of surgery for cancer or trauma. The commonest forms of plastic surgery used to correct such lesions are reviewed.

Assessment of cold atmospheric pressure plasma therapy initiated at peak severity in a mouse model of radiation dermatitis.

Radiation dermatitis (RD) is a common side effect of radiation therapy, potentially leading to treatment interruptions. This study evaluated the efficacy of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) in a mouse model of RD, specifically focusing on treatment initiation at the peak of disease severity. As secondary objective, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and optical coherence tomography (OCT), were evaluated as objective measures to monitor disease severity. RD was induced via gamma irradiation, with daily CAP treatment initiated at the peak severity. RD severity was monitored using macroscopic scoring and i

The potential of thermal imaging as an early predictive biomarker of radiation dermatitis during radiotherapy for head and neck cancer: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Predicting radiation dermatitis (RD), a common radiotherapy toxicity, is essential for clinical decision-making regarding toxicity management. This prospective study aimed to develop and validate a machine-learning model to predict the occurrence of grade ≥ 2 RD using thermal imaging in the early stages of radiotherapy in head and neck cancer. METHODS: Thermal images of neck skin surfaces were acquired weekly during radiotherapy. A total of 202 thermal images were used to calculate the difference map of neck skin temperature and analyze to extract thermal imaging features. Changes

A Case of Fluoroscopy-Induced Subacute Radiation Dermatitis Histologically Mimicking Sclerodermiform Lupus: Immunohistochemical Analysis of Cytotoxic Memory T-Cell Markers.

The histological hallmark of fluoroscopy-induced subacute radiation dermatitis (FISARD) is basovacuolar interface reaction with satellite cell necrosis mediated by CD8+ cytotoxic T-cells. Most published cases are described in patients who had a single interventional exposure. Here we report a case of FISARD in a 78-year-old man who underwent two cardiovascular interventions within 2 months. Biopsy of the skin lesion on his left back revealed not only epidermal cytotoxic interface activity with superficial perivascular dermatitis but also deep perivascular and interstitial dermal lymphoid infil

Deep learning dosiomics for the pretreatment prediction of radiation dermatitis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients treated with radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: To develop a combined dosiomics and deep learning (DL) model for predicting radiation dermatitis (RD) of grade ≥ 2 in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) after radiation therapy (RT) based on radiation dose distribution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed with 290 NPC patients treated with RT from two medical centers. The patients were categorized into three groups: a training set (n = 167), an internal validation set (n = 72), and an external validation set (n = 51), respectively. Dosiomic features, in conjunction with DL features derived from convol

Risk Prediction Model for Radiation-induced Dermatitis in Patients with Cervical Carcinoma Undergoing Chemoradiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced dermatitis (RD) is a common side-effect of therapeutic ionizing radiation that can severely affect patient quality of life. This study aimed to develop a risk prediction model for the occurrence of RD in patients with cervical carcinoma undergoing chemoradiotherapy using electronic medical records (EMRs). METHODS: Using EMRs, the clinical data of patients who underwent simultaneous radiotherapy and chemotherapy at a tertiary cancer hospital between 2017 and 2022 were retrospectively collected, and the patients were divided into two groups: a training group and a val

Deep Learning-Based Automatic Assessment of Radiation Dermatitis in Patients With Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Radiation dermatitis (RD) is a common, unpleasant side effect of patients receiving radiation therapy. In clinical practice, the severity of RD is graded manually through visual inspection, which is labor intensive and often leads to large interrater variations. To overcome these shortcomings, this study aimed to develop an automatic RD assessment based on deep learning (DL) techniques that could efficiently assist the RD severity classification in clinical application. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 1205 photographs of the head and neck region were collected from patients with na
