The effects of severe and moderate magnesium (Mg) deficiency on blood and urinary histamine were studied in 36 male weanling Sprague-Dawley rats with or without IgE-stimulating antigen challenge. The rats were divided into six groups: two each on 50 (severely deficient), 300 (moderately deficient), and 2000 (control) ppm Mg diets without and with immunization with ovalbumin challenge on days 0, 14, and 29. Unimmunized severely Mg-deficient rats had significantly elevated urinary histamine which returned to normal by 22 days, but whole blood histamine was still significantly elevated at 36 days

Metabolic disturbances of pancreatic hormones in obstructive jaundice in infancy were evaluated experimentally and clinically. Brain serotonin depletion induced by peripheral parachlorophenylalanine (pCPA) is frequently used to evaluate the role of the central serotoninergic system in the regulation of a number of physiological functions, including the secretion of renin by the kidney. Rats were exposed to daily 3-hr schedule-induced polydipsia sessions (fixed-time 1-min food-pellet delivery) with two drinking fluids available: cocaine solution and water. The constituent cells of the submandibular gland of immature rats were compared with those of adult animals as well as the estrogen and estrogen binding protein level. The submandibular gland of immature and that of adult animals were entirely different in structure. High levels of estrogen binding protein are present in the nuclei in the young male and female submandibular gland. Nuclear estradiol binding protein, however, was not detected in the gland of adults in both sexes. These results suggest that the submandibular gland of the immature rat is influenced by estrogen.

The daytime administration of the heme precursor 5-aminolevulinate (5-ALA) has been shown to reduce brain tryptophan and serotonin levels owing to saturation of liver tryptophan pyrrolase. Saturation of this enzyme with heme results in enhanced activity, leading to increased catabolism of tryptophan and thus making less tryptophan available to the brain. Tryptophan is also the precursor of melatonin, a primary secretory product of the pineal gland. Reduced melatonin levels, which could be a consequence of altered tryptophan metabolism, have been associated with depressive disorders in humans.
