BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common types of cancer in Western civilization and responsible for a high number of yearly deaths. Long-term outcome is influenced by many factors, potentially including socioeconomic aspects like income, education, and employment. Furthermore, annual surgical case volume plays a major role in achieving good oncological results. In our retrospective study, we evaluated the effect of socioeconomic deprivation and hospital volume on overall survival (OS) in the federal state of Saxony, Germany.
METHODS: All patients with CRC who underwent s

BACKGROUND: Transarterial radioembolisation (TARE) with Yttrium-90 resin microspheres is a treatment option for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer in the liver (mCRC). A better understanding of the prognostic factors and treatment application can improve survival outcomes.
METHODS: We analysed the safety and effectiveness of 237 mCRC patients included in the prospective observational study CIRSE Registry for SIR-Spheres Therapy (CIRT) for independent prognostic factors for overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS) and hepatic progression-free survival (hPFS) using the Cox

INTRODUCTION: Anal adenocarcinoma is a rare malignancy with a poor prognosis.
METHODS: We present a case of rare anal adenocarcinoma in a patient with normal screening colonoscopy. Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Result database between 2000 and 2016, we performed survival analysis among individuals>20 years old comparing anal and rectal cancers.
RESULTS: Survival analysis showed that anal adenocarcinoma is associated with worse outcomes compared with rectal adenocarcinoma and anal squamous cell carcinoma.
DISCUSSION: This case and survival data illustrate the importance of pro

A 50-year-old woman underwent laparotomic anterior resection(D3)and total hysterectomy with bilateral adnexectomy (type 2, 3.0×4.5 cm, pT4a[SE], N1a, M1c2[ovary and peritoneum], H0, P1, PUL0, stage Ⅳc, tub2>por, Cur B)for ovarian metastasis from rectal cancer in June 20XX. During the outpatient visit in May, 2 years and 11 months after surgery, a splenic tumor was found on abdominal contrast-enhanced CT, without distant metastasis in other organs. In July 20XX, laparoscopic splenectomy was performed for suspected splenic metastasis of rectal cancer. The specimen of the resected tumor showed pa

BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer (CRC) in pregnancy is very rare. It is often associated with poor prognosis which is contributed to delayed diagnosis due to the overlapping symptoms of CRC and pregnancy. The purpose of this case report is to highlight the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of CRC in a young pregnant patient with good maternal and fetal outcomes. CASE REPORT A 30-year-old patient, gravida 3, presented at 9-week gestation with a history of sudden painless, fresh, rectal bleeding with no aggravating factors such as constipation or hemorrhoids. Sigmoidoscopy showed a small f

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian metastases from rectal cancer are infrequent; thus it might be hard to diagnose and treat them. Our study introduces a challenging case which highlights our method in addressing such an issue.
PATIENTS CONCERNS: A 74-year-old woman was admitted to our Unit showing abdominal pain, vomit, and a gross abdominal mass located in the right iliac fossa and mesogastrium. Oncological markers recorded following abnormalities: carbohydrate antigen 19.9 (Ca19.9) = 453.40 U/mL, carbohydrate antigen 125 (Ca125) = 88.3 U/mL.
DIAGNOSIS: Such a metastatic tumor being difficult to diagno

Primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma is a particularly rare tumor with a poor prognosis. Curative resection is currently the only effective treatment, and the efficacy of chemotherapy is unclear. This represents the first case report of a patient with primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma co-existing with metastatic liver carcinoma. We present a 59-year-old man who was diagnosed preoperatively with rectal cancer with multiple liver metastases. He underwent a curative hepatectomy after a series of chemotherapy regimens with modified FOLFOX6 consisting of 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin and oxaliplatin plus bevac

A 35 year-old female patient with pelvic malignant mesothelioma is described. The patient underwent total pelvic exenteration due to a pelvic tumor. Macroscopically, the resected tumor was located in the rectovaginal lesion with invasion into the rectal and vaginal wall, and around the internal urethral ostium. Light microscopically, the tumor predominantly consisted of sheets of plump round cells with acidophilic cytoplasm, and focally of tumor cells showing papillary growth pattern. The tumor cells showed remarkable cellular pleomorphism, and were both alcian blue and periodic acid-Schiff st

The preoperative clinical assessment of patients with colorectal cancer provides the surgeon with sufficient information to allow an accurate assessment of operative risks, to plan the extent of resection needed to remove the primary and any associated synchronous lesions, to determine whether perioperative care should be modified to enhance the safety of the proposed surgery (bowel preparation, ureteral catheters, or ostomy placement), to determine operability and probable intent of surgery (curative or palliative), and to determine whether additional, more sophisticated testing is needed to

Expression of CA19-9 was studied in 29 adenomas and 6 adenocarcinomas of the distal colon in rectum. The authors did not find an unequivocal correlation between expression of CA19-9 and the morphological differentiation. Expression of CA19-9 was recorded twice in epithelia of normal mucosa.

A prospective registry of patients with obstructive jaundice referred for percutaneous bile duct drainage found six patients with extrahepatic obstruction due to colorectal cancer in a 21-month period. This cause of jaundice in patients with colorectal cancer is not uncommon, and deserves routine diagnostic consideration, even in the presence of intrahepatic metastases. Percutaneous biliary drainage was beneficial for four of the six patients.

The radiographic appearance at double contrast enema of 33 cases of invasive cancer on adenomatous polyps (AP) of the colon is reviewed. The radiologic diagnosis of malignancy was prospectively made in 54.5% of the cases. In 45.5% of the cases, malignancy was not suspected at the time of examination. The endoscopic appearance of these lesions was identical to that seen on the barium study. There are no radiologic criteria able to entirely rule out the possibility of a carcinomatous transformation of an AP. However, the radiologic features of malignancy (indentation of the intestinal wall and/o

Rectal carcinoma remains an enigma to surgical and medical oncologists. The chemo- and radiotherapeutic approaches have been fraught with failure, and when this happens the patient is left to the challenge of the surgical oncologist who sometimes must perform extensive re-resection to include adjacent structures. Experienced surgical judgement is assisted by preoperative and intraoperative criteria, which are contraindications to resection: preoperatively, they include metastases, fixation of tumour to pelvic wall, sciatica, obstruction of both ureters and leg edema. Intraoperatively, metastas

The concept of a polyp-cancer sequence is assuming increasing credibility as a factor in the development of colorectal cancer. Colonoscopy permits most colonic polyps to be endoscopically removed and studied pathologically. Of various polyp types encountered in the colon only neoplastic polyps are regarded as having malignant potential. Neoplastic polyps include tubular adenomas (formerly, adenomatous polyps), villous adenomas and villotubular adenomas (formerly, mixed or tuboglandular polyps). Cancerous changes must penetrate the muscularis mucosae for a polyp to be regarded as clinically mal

In colorectal carcinoma at the time of primary operation a much higher rate of occult micrometastases in the liver is to take in account as it is evident by the frequency of intraoperative found metastases (10--20%. Micrometastases likely can to need 3 to 8 years till they have increased so that the finally stage of generalization is to state. The survival rate of patients with colorectal carcinoma and hepatic metastases -- without therapy of metastases -- is 6 to 8 months and not differs from the survival rate of these patients whose primary tumor was inoperable by local reason. The today usu
