Major depressive disorder and patient satisfaction in relation to methadone pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in stabilized methadone maintenance patients.

Many patients enrolled in methadone maintenance treatment experience significant interdose opioid withdrawal. Mood states have been related to patient satisfaction with treatment and may influence how methadone patients experience opioid withdrawal. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of major depressive disorder on response to methadone in patients on methadone maintenance treatment. Seventeen methadone patients (7 depressed and 10 not depressed) had pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic assessments (opioid withdrawal, drug effects, and mood) over one 24-hour dosing int

Psychological, cognitive and quality of life features in the elderly with chronic headache.

Chronic headache is common in the elderly, but there is little specific research on the impact on quality of life of headache and beliefs about pain in this age group. This study investigated the influence of headache type as well as headache frequency (> or =15 headache days/month vs. <15 headache days/month) on quality of life and determined the relationships between elder's well-being, pain beliefs and related headache features including commonly reported neck pain. 118 headache subjects and 44 non-headache controls, aged 60-75 years, were recruited from the community. Subjects completed a

Reliability testing of a sun exposure questionnaire for the Northern Ireland population.

BACKGROUND: Sunbathing and other types of exposure to ultraviolet radiation are the major preventable risk factors for skin cancer. Due to the continued increase in incidence of melanoma in Northern Ireland, we have conducted a questionnaire survey in an attempt to gather information about sunbathing habits and other forms of ultraviolet light exposure amongst the Northern Ireland population. AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the test-retest reliability of a questionnaire used in a large-scale cross-sectional population survey pertaining to sunbathing habits, use of sun screen, skin t

How to improve satisfaction with hospital stay of severely injured patients.

BACKGROUND: In the context of medical quality assurance, patient satisfaction with medical and organisational aspects of health care service is considered to be a relevant outcome of patient surveys after a stay in hospital. Within quality research, it is assumed that assessments of patient satisfaction represent a direct measure of the quality of health care received. Furthermore, there is evidence that satisfied patients demonstrate higher levels of compliance for the course of their treatment and that the probability of successful treatment completion thus considerably increases. The presen

Joint-angle-dependent neuromuscular dysfunctions at the wrist in persons after stroke.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the joint-angle-dependent neuromuscular functions at the affected wrist in hemiplegic subjects after stroke while doing isometric maximal voluntary wrist flexion and extension across different wrist angles. DESIGN: We investigated torques during isometric maximal voluntary wrist flexions and extensions at 8 different wrist angles, ranging from -45 degrees to 60 degrees. We used the associated electromyographic activities of 2 agonist and antagonist muscle pairs related to wrist and elbow joints for the analysis of muscular coactivations. We compared the data obtained fr

Tolerance of Centrifuge-Simulated Spaceflight in Individuals with Diabetes Mellitus.

INTRODUCTION: There is increasing interest in the screening and evaluation of individuals with underlying medical conditions for participation in commercial spaceflight, including those with diabetes mellitus. Diabetes risks incapacitation through hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic events. Limited analog data exist regarding tolerance of spaceflight in diabetics; here we evaluated diabetic tolerance of centrifuge-simulated spaceflight. METHODS: Aggregated data from diabetic volunteers in prior studies of centrifuge-simulated spaceflight were compared to nondiabetic subjects. There were 20 (3 women

Psychologists' experience of working with people who hear voices and their views on the idea of voice simulation training: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Research indicates psychologists typically lack subjective understanding of voice hearing. Voice hearing simulation training has potential to improve understanding, empathy and confidence among clinicians, but psychologists have had limited input into its development. This study investigated psychologists' and a psychotherapist's clinical experience of working with people who hear voices and their views and recommendations for voice hearing simulation training. DESIGN: This was a qualitative study. METHODS: Clinical psychologists and one psychotherapist (N = 17) participated in s

Social support across eating disorder diagnostic groups: Results from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III).

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have suggested the positive influence of social support on the treatment and recovery of eating disorders (EDs). Yet, more research is needed on how objective and subjective social support differ between ED diagnostic groups using nationally representative data. Therefore, the current secondary data analysis examined associations between EDs and objective and subjective social support using data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III) study. METHODS: Participants completed measures of lifetime and past year diagn

Comorbidity of Chronic Tinnitus and Psychological Stress - Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg?

Subjective tinnitus is a frequent, debilitating hearing disorder causing severe emotional stress and psychological suffering. Likewise, many reports show that the onset of tinnitus occurs at the time of high stress or after a period of stress. It is also common for existing tinnitus to become worse during exposure to stress. However, in clinical practice the association between tinnitus and stress is often neglected. Extensive search of the Web of Science database has shown a low ratio of scientific articles about coexistence of stress and tinnitus compared to other stress-related conditions.

Baseline respiratory parameters in panic disorder: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The presence of abnormalities in baseline respiratory function of subjects with panic disorder (PD) is expected according to PD respiratory theories. We aimed to meta-analyze results from studies comparing baseline respiratory and hematic parameters related to respiration between subjects with PD and controls. METHODS: A literature research in bibliographic databases was performed. Fixed-effects models were applied for all parameters while random-effects models only when suitable (at least 10 independent studies). Several moderator analyses and publication bias diagnostics were pe

Digital disconnection: A systematic review of phubbing behavior.

Phubbing, or snubbing others in face-to-face interactions by attending to one's phone, has become an increasingly pervasive social behavior with important psychological and relational consequences. This systematic review, following PRISMA guidelines, synthesizes empirical research from the past decade to examine the antecedents, consequences, and mechanisms of phubbing across social contexts. A comprehensive search of the ScienceDirect database identified 22 peer-reviewed studies spanning romantic relationships, friendships, family interactions, educational environments, and workplace settings

A new questionnaire on alcohol-related risk perception: Validation and psychometric properties from a student sample and inpatients with alcohol use disorder in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Risk perception is a central concept in the public health and prevention field. Alcohol-related risk perception is distorted in alcohol use disorder (AUD), but is rarely employed in substance use research and therapy. The German questionnaire "Form to assess Alcohol-related Risk perception ('Fragebogen zur alkoholbezogenen Risikowahrnehmung'; FAR) is a 44-item self-report instrument measuring the subjective risk perception of typical dangers caused by hazardous alcohol use (health, risk behavior, social life, work, law). It is based on the theoretical framework of four risk percept

COVID-19-related distress is associated with analogue PTSD symptoms after exposure to an analogue stressor.

Background: The COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020 was associated with an immediate increase in mental health problems in a significant percentage of the general population. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate how the COVID-19 pandemic - as a psychosocial stressor - affected the aetiological processes of mental disorders. Previous research has shown that stress potentiates associative (fear) learning and analogue symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and that analogue PTSD symptoms can emerge in response to associative learning. Objective: We investigated whether distress in respon

Neural mechanisms of semantic interference and false recognition in short-term memory.

Decades of research using the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm have demonstrated that episodic memory is vulnerable to semantic distortion, and neuroimaging investigations of this phenomenon have shown dissociations between the neural mechanisms subserving true and false retrieval from long-term memory. Recently, false short-term memories have also been demonstrated, with false recognition of items related in meaning to memoranda encoded less than 5s earlier. Semantic interference is also evident in short-term memory, such that correct rejection of related lures is slowed relative to co
