Unilateral Situs Inversus of the Optic Disc in a Patient With Retinal Arteriolar Tortuosity.

Familial retinal arteriolar tortuosity (fRAT) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that is characterized by tortuosity of the second- and third-order arterioles around the posterior pole of retina. Most cases with fRAT lack associated systemic vascular abnormality. Situs inversus, a congenital anomaly, features emergence of retinal vessels from the optic nerve head in a nasal direction, usually occurs bilaterally. In this case report, the authors describe a unique case of fRAT with unilateral situs inversus. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina. 2020;51:533-535.].

Shiny multifocal chorioretinitis with papillitis.

We report a case of unilateral inflammation involving the retinal pigment epithelium-choriocapillaris complex and the optic disc, characterized by multiple, small, shiny, yellowish-white subretinal lesions involving the midperiphery of the retina and associated with optic disc edema. These lesions showed hypofluorescence in the early transit phase of the fluorescein angiogram and leakage in the late phase. Perivascular staining of the retinal vessels and diffuse optic disc leakage were also present. A benign course associated with marked visual improvement and resolution of the inflammatory le…

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in idiopathic retinal vasculitis, aneurysms and neuroretinitis (IRVAN) syndrome: A case report.

PURPOSE: Since its first description by Chang et al. in 1995, the diagnosis of Idiopathic retinal vasculitis, aneurysms and neuroretinitis (IRVAN) syndrome has been based on the findings of Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA). Our purpose was to describe the utility of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in its diagnosis and management. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 40-year-old female presented with bilateral blurred vision. Her best corrected visual acuity was at 8/10. Fundus examination revealed blurred disc margins, perivascular exudates, arterial sheaths and retinal hemorrhages bilate

Primitive retinal vascular abnormalities: tumors and telangiectasias.

Primitive retinal vascular abnormalities are benign conditions of the retinal circulation that comprise vascular tumors and telangiectasias. The principal vascular tumors of the retina include retinal capillary hemangioma, cavernous hemangioma of the retina, racemose hemangiomatosis of the retina and retinal vasoproliferative tumor, while primary retinal telangiectasias include Coats' disease, Leber's miliary aneurysms and idiopathic juxtafoveal telangiectasias. In most cases, these alterations result in significant visual impairment due to exudation determined by the structural abnormalities

When Coats' disease meets a retinal break: adult-onset presentation with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

BACKGROUND: Adult-onset Coats' disease is an uncommon, vision-threatening disorder characterized by exudation and vascular abnormalities in the peripheral and macular regions. Retinal detachment is typically exudative, while rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) in this context is rare. Here, we describe a case of adult-onset Coats' disease presenting with retinal detachment associated with an identifiable retinal break. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old man presented with a one-day history of decreased vision and a sensation of shadowing in his left eye. Dilated funduscopy of the left eye r

Short-Time Ocular Ischemia Induces Vascular Endothelial Dysfunction and Ganglion Cell Loss in the Pig Retina.

Visual impairment and blindness are often caused by retinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. We aimed to characterize a new model of I/R in pigs, in which the intraocular pathways were not manipulated by invasive methods on the ocular system. After 12 min of ischemia followed by 20 h of reperfusion, reactivity of retinal arterioles was measured in vitro by video microscopy. Dihydroethidium (DHE) staining, qPCR, immunohistochemistry, quantification of neurons in the retinal ganglion cell layer, and histological examination was performed. Retinal arterioles of I/R-treated pigs displayed marked

Quercetin Dilates Retinal Arterioles via Nitric Oxide-Dependent Mechanisms in Rats.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether quercetin, a flavonoid abundantly found in onion leaves and other plant foods, induces the dilation of retinal blood vessels in rats. The time-course changes in retinal arteriolar diameter were measured using a retinal circulation evaluation system based on a high-resolution digital fundus camera developed in our laboratory. The intravenous administration of quercetin (10-100 µg/kg/min) increased the retinal arteriolar diameter in a dose-dependent manner. This vasodilatory effect of quercetin was almost completely suppressed through an intra

Hyperhomocysteinemia Causes Chorioretinal Angiogenesis with Placental Growth Factor Upregulation.

Hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for atherosclerosis, which may also be associated with retinal vascular disease, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and glaucoma. For this study, we established a hyperhomocysteinemia animal model to explore homocysteine (hcy)-related choroidal angiogenesis and possible related factors. We injected Sprague Dawley (SD) rats with different concentrations of hcy and performed color fundus imaging, fluorescein angiography, image-guided optical coherence tomography, and retinal histology to observe the retinal and choroidal changes. Subsequently, we

Congenital retino-pigment epithelial malformation, previously described as hamartoma.

Six patients with a congenital malformation of the retina and pigment epithelium had a slightly elevated greenish-blue or gray lesion in the macular area or fundus periphery composed of a flat, outer pigmented portion consisting of a layer of hyperpigmented, presumably hypertrophied retinal pigment epithelium and a prominent, unpigmented inner portion consisting of malformed thickened retina. Marked tortuosity of the retinal vessels was explained by an intraretinal disturbance of the retinal layering and the presence of preretinal membranes. Angiography revealed blockage of the background fluo…

Retinal Vascular Signs and Cerebrovascular Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrovascular disease (CeVD), including stroke, is a leading cause of death globally. The retina is an extension of the cerebrum, sharing embryological and vascular pathways. The association between different retinal signs and CeVD has been extensively evaluated. In this review, we summarize recent studies which have examined this association. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We searched 6 databases through July 2019 for studies evaluating the link between retinal vascular signs and diseases with CeVD. CeVD was classified into 2 groups: clinical CeVD (including clinical stroke, silent cere

OCTA characteristics in non-arteritic central retinal artery occlusion and correlation with visual acuity.

AIM: To observe the retinal and choroidal circulations in patients with non-arteritic permanent central retinal artery occlusion (NA-CRAO) via optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and analyze their correlation with visual acuity. METHODS: Sixty-two eyes with clinically confirmed acute NA-CRAO were included in the study and divided into: A type (mild n=29), B type (moderate n=27) and C type (severe n=6) based on the degree of visual loss, retinal edema, and arterial blood flow delay in fundus fluorescence angiography (FFA). Contralateral healthy eyes were used as the control group.

Secure authentication using a multidimensional retinal biometric encryption method.

Biometric encryption integrates physiological traits with cryptographic operations to improve authentication security. Retinal vasculature is particularly attractive due to its internal protection, permanence, and high inter-subject variability. we present a revised and rigorously justified multidimensional retinal encryption framework that generates three independent keys—RDDM (Retinal Diagonal Distance Metric), ROTD (Radial Origin-Terminus Distance), and DRID (Diagonal–Radial Intersection Distance)—from a single retinal vessel map. This framework is intended as a biometric-driven key generat
