Childhood lichen sclerosus is a rare disorder. A 4-year-old girl with chronic vulvar pruritus who was initially suspected to be the victim of child abuse was treated. Vulvar biopsy was performed, confirming the diagnosis of lichen sclerosus. The child was treated with 2% progesterone cream, with complete resolution of her pruritic symptoms and signs of traumatic injury to the vulvar skin. The basic condition, lichen sclerosus, has persisted.

We give a retrospective survey on the clinical, histological, biochemical, and pathogenetical aspects of sclerodermiform changes rarely accompanying porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT). Sclerodermiform changes were seen in 12 patients (2% of all our PCT cases). In these patients, no correlation was found between the severity of the dermatological signs and symptoms and the degree of disturbance in the porphyrin metabolism. Biochemical remission was not accompanied by improvement of the sclerodermiform changes. The proportion of porphyrins with 4 or 5 COOH-groups was higher than that of PCT patients

Eosionophilic fasciitis (EF) was observed in a girl who suddenly developed indurations of the limbs accompanied by hypergammaglobulinaemia and peripheral eosinophilia. The deep fascia was impressively thickened and infiltrated with numerous inflammatory cells showing focal accumulations of eosinophils. The disease was progressive in spite of application of corticosteroids, and within three years, symmetrical sclerodermatous lesions developed on the face and trunk, going along with a severe sclerodactyly without Raynaud's phenomenon, as well as contractures of the upper and lower limbs causing

Localized scleroderma (LoS) is a chronic dermal disease with fibrotic skin and subcutaneous tissues. Owing to the largely undefined pathogenesis, there is no specific medical treatment for LoS. Recent investigator-initiated tests have revealed the clinical efficacy of botulinum neurotoxin type A1 (BoNT/A1) on treating LoS. However, the mechanism of action of BoNT/A1-based LoS intervention has not been fully illustrated. In this study, we used a bleomycin-induced skin fibrosis mouse model for evaluating the therapeutic effects and mechanism of actions of BoNT/A1 relevant to LoS. It was found th

BACKGROUND: Eyebrows play an essential role in facial symmetry, communication, and aesthetic identity. Scarring eyebrow alopecia results from inflammatory, autoimmune, infectious, genetic, traumatic, and iatrogenic processes that irreversibly damage follicular stem cells and limit regrowth potential. Despite its clinical and psychosocial impact, evidence-based guidance for diagnosis and management remains limited.
METHODS: A comprehensive PubMed search (1960–2025) was performed using terms related to "eyebrow alopecia," "eyebrow madarosis," and etiology-specific conditions. English-lang

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis (SSc), or scleroderma, is an autoimmune disease with localized/diffuse skin thickening and fibrosis as main features, where disease progression links to inflammatory immunity. Although atorvastatin has anti - inflammatory effects, its role in skin fibrosis is unclear. This study aimed to explore atorvastatin's anti - inflammatory and antifibrotic effects and mechanisms.
METHODS: In vivo, the anti - inflammatory and anti - fibrotic effects of atorvastatin were evaluated using a bleomycin - induced experimental SSc model and a keloid xenograft model. In vitro, an

Young adults with childhood-onset rheumatic diseases are more frequently establishing and continuing care with adult rheumatologists. The transfer of care can be challenging for both the young adult patients and their adult rheumatologists, in large part due to differences between pediatric-onset rheumatic diseases and their adult-onset counterparts, or due to the rarity of some pediatric-onset rheumatic conditions. Other challenges are due to cultural differences between pediatric and adult medical care and to the young adult needing to increasingly perform self-management skills that were pr

Although there are many single case reports on paraneoplastic dermatoses in the literature, there are very rare articles containing multiple cases. A retrospective study was performed to examine paraneoplastic dermatoses and accompanying malignancies based on skin manifestations and appropriate diagnostic evaluations. We recorded outcomes, current conditions, and surgical/oncologic treatments. Analysis revealed paraneoplastic dermatoses in 17 patients with various skin lesions, i.e. eczematous dermatitis, vasculitis, subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, pruritus, chronic urticaria/angioedem

BACKGROUND: Using autologous cryopreserved mononuclear cells (MNCs) for extracorporeal photochemotherapy (ECP) offers several advantages, such as treating patients from geographically distant care centers or maintaining ECP schedule while dramatically reducing number of apheresis sessions. We previously reported that cryopreserved cells retain their immunomodulatory properties when exposed to UVA and psoralen. To date, there are no clinical data on the use of cryopreserved MNCs for ECP ("cryo-ECP").
CASE REPORTS: Three patients were treated by cryo-ECP for refractory dermatomyositis, juvenile

In dermatology, topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a well established treatment modality which has mainly shown to be effective for dermato-oncologic conditions like actinic keratosis, Bowen's disease, in-situ squamous cell carcinoma and superficial basal cell carcinoma. However, a therapeutical benefit of PDT is also evident for inflammatory dermatoses like localized scleroderma, acne vulgaris and granuloma annulare as well as for aesthetic indications like photo aged skin or sebaceous gland hyperplasia. Recent work has been focused on the development and evaluation of topical photosensiti

Topical photodynamic therapy with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA-PDT) is a well-established treatment regimen for superficial epithelial skin tumours, but it is evident that inflammatory diseases of the skin and virus-induced lesions can also profit from PDT. Depending on the light dose applied, either cytotoxic effects resulting in tumour destruction or immunomodulatory effects resulting in improvement of inflammatory conditions occur. Patients with localized scleroderma that had been unresponsive to various treatments, including PUVA or bath-PUVA therapy, respond very well to topical ALA-PDT per

Morphea (localized scleroderma) is a disease of unknown etiology, presenting as circumscribed areas of indurated skin. Histologically, most cases of morphea feature thickened collagen bundles in the deep reticular dermis, sometimes also extending into the superficial dermis or into the subcutis. We present six cases of morphea in which typical histologic features were restricted to the superficial dermis and contrast these with 27 additional biopsies of conventional morphea seen during the same time period. Sections were stained for elastic fibers, and dermal dendritic cells were labeled with

The COBAS Core HEp2 ANA enzyme immune assay (EIA) was evaluated in a precision and a clinical sample study in comparison to indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) on HEp2-cells. In the precision study the COBAS Core EIA yielded intraassay coefficient variations (CVs) mostly below 9%, and interassay CVs between 4.7% and 10.4%. When comparing the COBAS Core EIA to IFA, the results corresponded well in healthy subjects, systemic lupus erythematosus, mixed connective tissue disease and rheumatoid arthritis. In the case of Sjögren's syndrome and scleroderma patients the COBAS Core EIA yielded a lo

This study of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) describes the clinical, pathologic and laboratory features, and the causes of morbidity and mortality in 20 patients who received allogeneic marrow transplants from HLA identical sibling donors. Chronic GVHD is a pleiotrophic syndrome with variability in the time of onset, organ systems involved and rate of progression. The clinical-pathologic features resemble an overlap of several collagen vascular diseases with frequent involvement of the skin, liver, eyes, mouth, upper respiratory tract, esophagus and less frequent involvement of the s

Gastric emptying studies, using an indigenously prepared radiolabeled solid food marker in the form of Indian bread called Chapati, were performed on 13 patients with systemic sclerosis. Six patients had limited cutaneous disease and seven had diffuse cutaneous disease. Earlier, the procedure was standardized in 30 healthy volunteers. Seven of the 13 (54%) patients (five with diffuse and two with limited cutaneous disease) had delayed gastric emptying. Most of these patients had gastric symptoms. This pattern of gastric emptying may be clinically significant, particularly in patients with diff

Autoantibodies to HMG-17, a non-histone nucleosomal protein, were found in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and ANA positive pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), but not in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Using highly purified HMG-17 derived from porcine thymus, we tested sera from 50 patients with scleroderma for antibodies to HMG-17 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). There were 16 patients with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (dSSc) and 34 with limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (1SSc) with age at disease onset 40.25 +/- 1

Topoisomerase I activity was studied by electrophoresis in agarose gel according to plasmid DNA relaxation. Sera from 62 patients with systemic scleroderma, 35 with Raynaud's syndrome, 8 with focal scleroderma, 15 with systemic lupus erythematosus, 20 with rheumatoid arthritis and 20 healthy subjects were examined. Out of 62 sera from SSD patients, anti-topoisomerase activity was found in 67.8% of cases. The test appeared positive in 79% of patients with diffuse and 63% with limited disease patterns. The mean age and disease standing were similar in the positive and negative groups. An increas
