The relative incidence of latent syphilis, which can only be detected by serological techniques, has continued to increase. As a matter of routine, we use the TPHA test for screening, the FTA-Abs test for confirmation, and the IgM tests to control the therapeutic outcome. Nowadays, neurosyphilis can definitely be detected by serologic procedures, such as the TPHA index.

A case of syphilitic alopecia on the legs of young man is described. Both positive serologic tests and the clinical response to treatment with penicillin suggest that this alopecia was due to syphilis. This report suggests that the physician should be aware of the possible unusual location of syphilitic alopecia at sites other than the scalp, eyebrows, and beard.

Lymphoglandular toxoplasmosis has a reputation for mimicking several other diseases, especially infectious mononucleosis. Thus, the correct diagnosis often is not discovered until common conditions have been ruled out and the patient has been subjected to excisional lymph node biopsy. The physician who considers toxoplasmosis early and orders appropriate serologic tests can spare the patient unnecessary surgery.

We report the case of an alcoholic patient, 41 years old, with negative results of serologic tests for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with a perianal Buschke-Löwenstein tumor present for eight years and exceptionally large. The patient's cell-mediated immunity was evaluated by two functional tests: the Multitest IMC (Institut Mérieux, Lyon) and the dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) test. The patient neither responded to any Multitest antigens nor was sensitized by DNCB. We consider that the immune short-age in this patient could influence the appearance of the Buschke-Löwenstein tumor.

In a study carried out in Gabon, antibodies against the treponema were looked for in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in 13 children with active congenital syphilis (presence of specific IgM antibodies) and in 7 children with positive serologic reactions reflecting transplacental passage of maternal antibodies. We report the first laboratory-confirmed case of Rickettsia mongolotimonae infection in Africa. The patient sought treatment for an eschar on his toe; lymphangitis, severe headaches, and fever subsequently developed. After a regimen of doxycycline, symptoms rapidly resolved. R. mongolotimonae infection was diagnosed retrospectively by serologic tests and molecular-based detection of the organism in biopsy specimens of eschar material.

We describe a 24-year-old man who developed reactive arthritis (ReA) after a dysenteric illness caused by Salmonella hadar. Serologic tests suggested recent exposure of family members to Salmonella. All members of the family were HLA-B27 positive, but no other family member developed acute ReA, although 2 of them had clinical evidence of previously existing B27 associated arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease caused by the filarial nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Brugia timori. The Global Program to Eliminate LF uses mass drug administration (MDA) of anti-filarial drugs that clear microfilariae (Mf) from blood to interrupt transmission by mosquitos.
