Vagotomy prevents morphine-induced reduction in Fos-like immunoreactivity in trigeminal spinal nucleus produced after TMJ injury in a sex-dependent manner.

Acute injury to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region activates neurons in multiple, but spatially discrete, areas of the trigeminal spinal nucleus as seen by an increase in Fos-like immunoreactive neurons (Fos-LI). Pretreatment with morphine greatly reduces Fos-LI produced in the dorsal paratrigeminal area (dPa5), ventrolateral pole of the subnucleus interpolaris/caudalis (Vi/Vc-vl) transition region, and laminae I-II at the subnucleus caudalis/upper cervical cord junction (Vc/C2) suggesting a role for these areas in processing pain signals from the TMJ region. To determine if vagal affere

Age-related changes in bone mass, structure, and strength--effects of loading.

The incidence of vertebral fracture has increased three- to fourfold for women and more than fourfold for men during the last 30 years. These data are age-adjusted and therefore highlight the decrease in bone mass or bone quality from generation to generation. To arrest or reverse these increases in osteoporotic fractures, effective preventive regimens must be established. However, in order to do so, a basic understanding of age-related changes in the quality and strength of vertebral bone is crucial. In this study, the normal age-related changes in human bone have been investigated by using a

Physical activity, post-traumatic stress disorder, and exposure to torture among asylum seekers in Sweden: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Forced migrant populations have high rates of trauma-related ill health, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Physical activity (PA) is well-established as an effective stress reliever, while insufficient PA is associated with adverse effects on both mental and physical health. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of different levels of PA and its association with PTSD symptom severity, controlled for exposure to torture, among asylum seekers in Sweden. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study, with data from 455 asylum seekers, originating from Afghanist

Neisseria gonorrhoeae among suspects of sexually transmitted infection in Gambella hospital, Ethiopia: risk factors and drug resistance.

BACKGROUND: Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a bacterium responsible for one of the classic sexually transmitted infection (STI) gonorrhea. Antibiotic resistant strains are emerging at alarming rate. Multiple sexual partners, unsafe sex and substance use habits are the main host related risk factors for acquiring the infection. Thus, this study aimed at determining the magnitude, its determinants and antimicrobial resistance profile of N. gonorrhoeae in a place where there is risk related cultural practices and relatively high HIV prevalence. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 186 STI

Cell-specific expression of APP and GABABR1 isoforms in wild-type and the APP NL-G-F mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a type I transmembrane protein that undergoes proteolytic processing to generate amyloid-β, the main component of amyloid plaques found in brains with Alzheimer's disease (AD). APP proteolytic processing also generates soluble APP alpha (sAPPα) which modulates synaptic transmission and neurite outgrowth through the γ-aminobutyric acid type B receptor (GABABR). sAPPα specifically binds the 1a isoform of GABABR subunit 1 (R1a) which contains two sushi domains absent in R1b. Here, we define the cell type-specific expression patterns of APP and GABABR1a in the br

Relationship between age and severity of cognitive impairment at diagnosis for early-onset and late-onset Alzheimer's disease: Comparison of LEADS and ADNI.

INTRODUCTION: Recent work has identified unique cognitive profiles for early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) relative to late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD), however, examination has been limited in determining whether the association between age and cognitive severity at presentation also differs across conditions. METHODS: A series of linear spline regression models was conducted across baseline cognitive data from 325 EOAD and 314 LOAD participants, after accounting for education, sex, and apolipoprotein ε4 status. RESULTS: Significant differences existed in the relationship between ba

Acute temporal lesions are associated with phonological word verification errors.

BACKGROUND: Within the dual stream model for language, the bilateral dorsal superior temporal gyrus (STG) is associated with spectro-temporal analysis while the mid-post superior temporal sulcus is associated with processing of higher-level phonological codes. However, the true lateralization of functions needed for phonological discrimination at the word level remains unsettled. The aim of the present work was to determine if individuals with acute stroke primarily involving the left STG and middle temporal gyrus (MTG) demonstrated poorer discrimination (d') between phonologically related wor

An Executive Functioning Composite Does Not Moderate the Relationship Between Combat Exposure and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Clusters.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is prevalent among U.S. combat Veterans, and associated with poor health and wellbeing. As combat experiences are likely to significantly modify self-, other-, and society-oriented cognitions and heighten risk for PTSD, examination of related cognitive processes may yield new treatment strategies. The cognitive model of PTSD suggests that persistent threat perceptions contribute to symptom worsening. Thus, cognitive processes of shifting perspectives or generating novel interpretations may be particularly relevant to lessen PTSD symptoms. This cr

Interaural frequency mismatch jointly modulates neural brainstem binaural interaction and behavioral interaural time difference sensitivity in humans.

The binaural interaction component (BIC) of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) is the difference obtained after subtracting the sum of right and left ear ABRs from binaurally evoked ABRs. The BIC has attracted interest as a biomarker of binaural processing abilities. Best binaural processing is presumed to require spectrally-matched inputs at the two ears, but peripheral pathology and/or impacts of hearing devices can lead to mismatched inputs. Such mismatching can degrade behavioral sensitivity to interaural time difference (ITD) cues, but might be detected using the BIC. Here, we examine

Telomere length and verbal learning in bipolar disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies indicate accelerated ageing processes, shorter telomere length and poorer cognitive functioning in patients with bipolar disorder. The neurobiology underlying cognitive function in bipolar disorder is yet to be established. We anticipated that accelerated ageing as indicated by shortened telomere length, would be associated with reduced cognitive performance in bipolar disorder, particularly for ageing sensitive functions such as memory and learning. METHODS: The study consisted of 647 participants (bipolar disorder [n = 246] and healthy controls [n = 401]). All p

Inhibition of SOX9 Promotes Inflammatory and Immune Responses of Dental Pulp.

INTRODUCTION: The process of pulpitis is characterized by extracellular matrix imbalance and inflammatory cell infiltration. As an essential transcription factor, sex-determining region Y-box 9 (SOX9) is significantly inhibited by tumor necrosis factor alpha in inflammatory joint diseases. The aim of this study was to explore the role of SOX9 in extracellular matrix balance, cytokine expression, and the immune response in dental pulp. METHODS: The expression of SOX9 in normal and inflamed pulp tissue/human dental pulp cells (HDPCs) was detected by immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and quant

Proteins, Transcripts, and Genetic Architecture of Seminal Fluid and Sperm in the Mosquito Aedes aegypti.

The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti,, transmits several viruses causative of serious diseases, including dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Some proposed efforts to control this vector involve manipulating reproduction to suppress wild populations or to replace them with disease-resistant mosquitoes. The design of such strategies requires an intimate knowledge of reproductive processes, yet our basic understanding of reproductive genetics in this vector remains largely incomplete. To accelerate future investigations, we have comprehensively catalogued sperm and seminal fluid proteins (SFPs) t

Abnormal regional homogeneity in patients with irritable bowel syndrome: A resting-state functional MRI study.

BACKGROUND: Task-related brain imaging research has implicated abnormal central processing of visceral sensation in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, how brain function of IBS patients is altered during resting-state remains to be determined. We investigated spontaneous brain activity of patients with IBS using regional homogeneity (ReHo) analysis in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). METHODS: Thirty-one patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS and 32 age- and sex- matched healthy controls underwent clinical assessments and rs-fMRI scanning. ReHo maps were acq

Association of subclinical inflammation with polyneuropathy in the older population: KORA F4 study.

OBJECTIVE: Inflammatory processes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic distal sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSPN), but their possible relationship has not been assessed at the population level. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We determined serum concentrations of mediators of subclinical inflammation among 1,047 participants 61-82 years of age from the population-based Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg (KORA) F4 study (Germany). Logistic and linear regression models were fitted to assess associations between immune mediators (log-transformed) and the presence o

[Attribution style of patients with delusion disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Attribution style represents a tendency to explain events by our own actions, or actions of forces and causes, persons or surroundings, which are external. OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was the analysis of specific way in which patients with delusion disorders ascribe meanings to events. METHOD: The test group included 30 patients with delusional disorder, of both sexes, aged between 30 and 53, without serious organic or somatic disorders. In order to determine the specific attribution system, through a wider frame of cognitive style, Rorschach's cognitive techniques wa

Sex alters thyroid hormone's effect on protein O-GlcNAcylation in the aged mouse heart.

BACKGROUND: The aging heart undergoes physiological changes, many of which are sex dependent and encompass differential responses to cardiac stress. However, much about the molecular changes that occur within the aging heart is still unknown. Thyroid hormone (TH) and the posttranslational modification O-GlcNAcylation (O-GlcNAc) are independently known to regulate cardiac function; therefore, we tested the hypothesis that TH disorders affect cardiac protein O-GlcNAcylation in aged hearts. RESULTS: We treated male and female 18-22 month-old aged C57BL/6 mice to create euthyroid, hypothyroid, or

Late-long-term potentiation magnitude, but not Aβ levels and amyloid pathology, is associated with behavioral performance in a rat knock-in model of Alzheimer disease.

Cleavage of Amyloid precursor protein by β- and γ-secretases lead to Aβ formation. The widely accepted pathogenic model states that these mutations cause AD via an increase in Aβ formation and accumulation of Aβ in Amyloid plaques. APP mutations cause early onset familial forms of Alzheimer's disease (FAD) in humans. We generated App-Swedish (Apps ) knock-in rats, which carry a pathogenic APP mutation in the endogenous rat App gene. This mutation increases β-secretase processing of APP leading to both augmented Aβ production and facilitation of glutamate release in Apps/s rats, via a β-secreta
