Twenty-five patients with a partial or complete collapse of the humeral head caused by post-traumatic avascular necrosis underwent clinical and radiologic evaluation at an average of 7.5 years (range 2.3 to 17.6 years) after having an underlying proximal humeral fracture. Posttraumatic humeral head necrosis was always associated with disability. The overall shoulder function as assessed with the Constant score was 46 points, corresponding to a functional shoulder value of 51% of an age- and sex-matched normal control group. The clinical outcome was significantly related to the anatomic alignme

Fracture-dislocation of the humeral head into the thoracic cavity is a rare injury. We present one such case in a 70-year-old woman. She presented with a 4-part fracture-dislocation of the proximal humerus, with displacement of the humeral head into the thoracic cavity. She had no signs of acute distress or hemodynamic instability. She underwent hemiarthroplasty of the right shoulder, but the humeral head fragment could not be removed. At 27-month follow-up, the patient had limited mobility of her right shoulder due to axillary nerve palsy but no pain or intrathoracic complications. In the abs

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The combination of an open acromion fracture with a massive rotator cuff tear is an exceptional lesion, rarely described in the literature. It generally occurs after open shoulder trauma, and requires well-codified therapeutic measures to avoid complications that could keep the patient from being as autonomous as possible and able to perform daily activities.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 26-year-old patient with a wound on the posterior surface of the left shoulder following an attack. Standard X-ray showed a fracture of the acromion. Surgical explor

We have reviewed the history of 154 primary, traumatic dislocations of the shoulder in order to determine the risk of recurrence. We found a recurrence rate of 68% in patients under the age of 20, after a follow-up period of 1-9 years (average 4.5 years). There was a highly significant difference (p < 0.0001) in the recurrence rate of patients under, and above, 30 years of age. Twenty per cent of the patients had a concurrent minor fracture at the shoulder with 2 out of 39 of the recurrent cases (5%) and 29 of the 115 non-recurrent cases (25%); this is also a significant difference (p < 0.01).

Computed tomographic (CT) scans of the shoulders of 10 normal individuals and six patients with a history of recent or recurrent shoulder dislocation were reviewed. In normal individuals, the surface of the glenoid was smooth and was always within 10 degrees of being perpendicular to the body of the scapula. As scans progressed from cephalad to caudad, the glenoid surface twisted and faced more anteriorly. The center of the humeral head always projected within the central one-third of the glenoid fossa. In the patients with dislocations, CT scans depicted a variety of lesions, including: bony

We analysed retrospectively 50 humerus fractures in the vicinity of elbow joint and 40 fractures of the proximal humerus with respect to possible injuries of the vessel pattern of the epiphyseal plate. The normal vessel pattern of the epiphyseal plate was examined postmortem on 8 foetus and newborns up to 6 months. We plastinated the affected regions and could compare symmetry of the vessel pattern in the epiphyseal plates as well as therapeutic consequences, especially after injuries of the elbow joint. Vascular disturbances in the case of young children, i.e. by fractures of the lateral oder

The adolescent athlete with an open epiphyseal plate presents with different shoulder problems than does the adult. Most shoulder injuries in the adolescent athlete can be treated conservatively with a good prognosis for full return of function. The exception is a glenohumeral dislocation, which will probably recur and need a surgical reconstruction.

Snapping scapula syndrome represents a rare entity in shoulder surgery. Clinically, it presents as shoulder pain and loud crepitus during shoulder movement. Moreover, glenohumeral bursitis can cause additional pain. Snapping scapula syndrome is caused by an increased angulation of the superomedial part of the scapula combined with bursitis. Other common causes such as subscapular osteochondroma or rib fracture non-unions were excluded. We report a 24-year-old female patient with persisting shoulder pain and disturbing crepitus during movement of the left shoulder. Radiographic examination reve

There is no agreement within literature regarding management of scapula fractures. Our aim was to carry out a systematic review of literature on management of the scapular fractures. Our search across multiple medical databases for studies on the scapular fractures until February 2014 yielded 32 studies. We have excluded case series <7 patients, case reports, review articles, articles without abstract, observational studies and articles on fractures following shoulder arthroplasty. There were 8 prospective case series and one cohort study, however, majority of the included studies were retrosp

Introduction Humerus fractures are fairly prevalent in the general population, and their incidence increases with age. The majority of minimally displaced fractures may be treated with prompt rehabilitation. An interdisciplinary team strategy involving experienced musculoskeletal specialists, geriatricians, and skilled physiotherapists should be employed for optimal therapy. Rehabilitation is essential in coping with the consequences of the fracture. The greatest current information for shoulder rehabilitation comprises the use of counseling, exercises, and mobility of restricted joints to reg

BACKGROUND: Extraction of well-fixed humeral implants during revision shoulder arthroplasty is difficult and prone to complications, especially humeral fracture (up to 12% in anatomic stem revision and 30% in reverse stem revision). To prevent this complication, we perform a vertical incomplete humerotomy (VIH) and use cerclages with suture loops and Nice knots for fixation. The purpose of this study is to describe the VIH technique with suture cerclage fixation, report the perioperative complications, and evaluate the radiological and clinical results outcomes.
METHODS: We performed a retros

Coracoid process fractures are rare and few cases have been reported in the orthopedic literature. In this article, we report the case of an American football player with a coracoid process fracture in the setting of acromioclavicular separation and describe incidence, mechanism of injury, and treatment. Although rare, coracoid process fracture should be considered in the differential diagnosis for shoulder pain. Treatment varies according to fracture type. Based on our literature review, we recommend that clinicians initially treat nondisplaced coracoid fractures nonoperatively.

The distal radius is one of the most commonly fractured long bone. Colles' fracture results from a fall on the dorsiflexed and pronated hand. The dinner-fork deformity is the typical deformity of the Colles' fracture. For patients with no or a little displacement, conservative treatment is applied. The non-bridge type external fixator is applied for patients without an intra articular fracture. For patients with a comminuted fracture, the locking plate (volar approach) is recommended. During the healing period, shoulder, elbow and finger exercise should be insisted.

Fractures in patients affected by HIV are more frequent than what is reported in patients with no retroviral diseases. Chronic infection with HIV likely contributes to increased systemic inflammation, which has been associated with increased rates of fracture. We report a case of a 56-year-old male (HIV + in treatment with Atripla) heavy worker, at the beginning affected by intra-articular proximal humerus fracture treated with endoprosthesis replacement and later by periprosthetic fracture treated with plate, screws and cerclages. Follow up was performed with clinical evaluation (ROM, VAS, Q

PURPOSE: To compare the radiological and clinical outcomes of interlocking nail (ILN) and locking plate fixation (LCP) for humeral shaft fractures.
METHODS: A total of 63 patients with displaced humeral shaft fractures between October 2014 and January 2017 were evaluated prospectively. They were divided randomly into two as LCP fixation (group 1) and interlocking nail (ILN) (group 2). Functional outcomes were evaluated using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) shoulder scores, a

Posttraumatic stiffness of the shoulder joint is a frequent and socioeconomically relevant result of injury; however, prior to making the diagnosis as the only cause of a persisting impairment of motion, it is necessary to rule out other sequelae of trauma. Even intensive conservative treatment is mostly accompanied by the stagnation of the impairments of movement. In many cases the treatment of choice is early arthroscopic arthrolysis with a standardized approach and intensive follow-up treatment. In the surgical treatment of proximal humeral fractures with humeral head preservation, arthrosc

PURPOSE: Following shoulder dislocation, injuries such as rotator cuff tear (RCT), axillary nerve injury, greater tuberosity (GT) fracture, Hill-Sachs lesion, and Bankart lesion frequently occur. This study aimed to develop and validate a clinical prediction model for the occurrence of RCT after acute anterior shoulder dislocation. METHODS: This study included all patients with acute anterior shoulder dislocation who presented to the emergency orthopedics department of the same institution from July 2021 to March 2025. Lasso regression was used to select independent variables for the model. A
