Association between sleep quality and dry eye disease: a literature review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to systematically review the association between dry eye and sleep quality. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science, and grey literature databases were searched for observational studies published before April 2023. Meta-analysis was performed using STAT15 software. RESULTS: A total of 21 studies with 419,218 participants were included. The results showed that the dry eye subjects had a worse sleep quality than the healthy population, with poorer subjective sleep quality, longer sleep latency, and a higher risk of unhealthy sleep duration s

The association between sleep duration and muscle sympathetic nerve activity.

PURPOSE: Sleep duration is associated with risk of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. It is thought that shorter sleep increases sympathetic activity. However, most studies are based on acute experimental sleep deprivation that have produced conflicting results. Furthermore, there are limited data available on habitual sleep duration and gold-standard measures of sympathetic activation. Hence, this study aimed to assess the association between habitual sleep duration and muscle sympathetic nerve activity. METHODS: Twenty-four participants aged ≥ 18 years were included in the study. Extracts of Prunella vulgaris Enhanced Pentobarbital-Induced Sleeping Behavior in Mice Potentially via Adenosine A2A Receptor Activity.

The increasing prevalence of sleep dysregulation cases has prompted the search for effective and safe sleep-enhancing agents. Numerous medications used in the treatment of sleep disorders function by enhancing γ-aminobutyric acid neurotransmitter activity. Unfortunately, these substances may induce significant adverse effects in chronic users, such as dependence and motor behavior impairments. Consequently, there is a growing interest in exploring therapeutic sleep-enhancing agents derived from natural sources, with the anticipation of causing less severe side effects. Prunella vulgaris (PV),

Fear extinction memory is negatively associated with REM sleep in insomnia disorder.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Formation and maintenance of fear-extinction memories are disrupted in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety disorders. Sleep contributes to emotional memory consolidation and emotion regulation. Insomnia disorder (ID) is characterized by persistent sleep disturbance as well as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep abnormalities and often precedes or develops in parallel with PTSD and anxiety disorders. Here, we explore the impact of chronic poor sleep and sleep immediately following fear conditioning and extinction learning on preservation of extinction memories. METHO

Back to Roots: Dysbiosis, Obesity, Metabolic Syndrome, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, and Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Is There an Objective Connection? A Narrative Review.

In recent decades, it has become clear that the gut is more than just a digestive organ; it also functions as an immune organ with regulatory capabilities and acts as a "second brain" that influences brain function due to the presence and regulatory roles of the gut microbiota (GM). The GM is a crucial component of its host and significantly impacts human health. Dysbiosis, or microbial imbalance, has been closely linked to various diseases, including gastrointestinal, neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic disorders. The aim of this narrative review is to highlight the roles of the GM in ma

Potential mechanism for transition between acute hypercapnia during sleep to chronic hypercapnia during wakefulness in obstructive sleep apnea.

This paper presents a series of experiments, both in patients and computer models, investigating the transition from acute to chronic hypercapnia in OSA. The data demonstrate that acute hypercapnia during periodic breathing occurs due to either reduction in magnitude of inter-event ventilation and/or reduction in inter-event ventilatory duration relative to duration of the preceding event. The transition between acute hypercapnia during sleep and chronic sustained hypercapnia during wakefulness may be determined by an interaction between respiratory control and renal handling of HCO3-.

Longer Sleep Duration Predicts Progression to Bipolar or Psychotic Disorders in Youth accessing Early Intervention Mental Health Services.

BACKGROUND: While growing evidence implicates sleep-wake and circadian rhythm disturbances (SCRDs) in the onset and course of mood and psychotic disorders, longitudinal studies using objective measures are limited. This clinical cohort study examined whether actigraphy-derived SCRDs (sleep duration, timing, and efficiency) predicted transition to (i) any full-threshold mental disorders; and then specifically: (ii) full-threshold bipolar or psychotic disorders or (iii) other full-threshold (i.e. depressive or anxiety) disorders, in youth accessing mental health care. Multifactorial sleep disturbance in Klinefelter syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Klinefelter syndrome (KS), which is related to the presence of an additional X chromosome in a man, is associated with a broad variety of physical and psychosocial impairments. While the focus is usually placed on symptoms related to hypogonadism, such as infertility, recent studies have noted evidence of poor sleep in those patients. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report on the case of a 44-year-old man with KS who consulted in our Sleep medicine center for excessive daytime sleepiness and delayed sleep with irregular patterns. Polysomnography (PSG) revealed sleep apnea syndrome, with both

Current Insights into the Risks of Using Melatonin as a Treatment for Sleep Disorders in Older Adults.

Exogenous melatonin is commonly used for sleep disorders in older adults, and its use is increasing over time. It appears to have modest efficacy in treating insomnia and circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders. Melatonin is commonly perceived to be a safe alternative to other hypnotics and is available without prescription in some jurisdictions. New evidence suggests that endogenous melatonin has pleomorphic effects on multiple organ systems, many of which are poorly understood. This narrative review summarizes the current evidence regarding the safety of melatonin in older adults (defined by a

Narcolepsy and psychiatric comorbidity: a review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep-wake disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive daytime sleepiness, hypnagogic hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. There are two subtypes: narcolepsy type 1 (with cataplexy) and narcolepsy type 2 (without cataplexy). This review aims to investigate the comorbidity of psychiatric disorders in narcolepsy. METHODS: We examined this association through a systematic literature review conducted on July 20, 2024. Searches were performed in PubMed and Embase. RESULTS: In general, the prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorders in patients

Slow-wave sleep engages brainstem circuitry to prevent stress-induced anxiety.

The beneficial effects of sleep on anxiety are established, but the mechanisms remain unclear. We identify a GABAergic circuit from the parafacial zone (PZ) to the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPB) neurons that project to the oval bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (ovBNST) as a node for slow-wave sleep (SWS)-mediated anxiolysis. Optogenetic activation of PZ GABAergic neurons following social defeat stress induces time-locked SWS and prevents anxiety. Multi-region Ca2+ recording reveals suppressed activity in LPB and ovBNST during natural and PZ-initiated SWS. The LPB-ovBNST pathway is requi

Dysregulation of the orexin-leptin-ghrelin axis and its associations with chronotype and sleep disturbances in drug-naïve children with ADHD.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by inattention and behavioral dysregulation. Sleep disturbances are frequently reported in ADHD and strongly associated with circadian rhythms and sleep-wake regulation. Given the pivotal involvement of orexin, leptin and ghrelin systems in the modulation of cognitive, metabolic and circadian functions, this study aimed to investigate whether serum orexin-A, orexin-B, leptin and ghrelin levels are associated with chronotype and sleep disturbances in children with ADHD. Forty-five drug-naïve ADHD patients a

The overlaps of asthma or COPD with OSA: A focused review.

Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are the most common respiratory disorders worldwide. Given demographic and environmental changes, prevalence for each is likely to increase. Although exact numbers are not known, based on chance alone, many people will be affected by both lower airways obstruction and concomitant upper airway obstruction during sleep. Some recent studies suggest that there is a reciprocal interaction, with chronic lung disease predisposing to OSA, and OSA worsening control and outcomes from chronic lung disease. Thus, the c

Assessing and Promoting Sleep Health: A Brief Guide for Nurses.

Despite the importance of sleep for maintaining health and well-being, there is a notable lack of educational curricula and training on sleep health in nursing schools and clinical settings. To ensure holistic care, it is essential for nurses to be well-prepared to assess and address sleep-related issues. This article outlines foundational information on sleep; general sleep health assessment; symptoms, risk factors, and screening measures related to obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, and circadian rhythm sleep disorders; and practical strategies to promote healthy sleep.

Relationship between nocturnal enuresis and sleep in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is a multifactorial and complex condition. One less understood factor in its pathophysiology is the enuretic inability to wake up when the bladder is full (impaired arousal). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep and NE in children and adolescents. METHODS: A systematic review was performed following the PRISMA guidelines, and the electronic databases MEDLINE (via PubMed) and SCOPUS were searched until March 2022. Eligibility criteria were studies that recruited patients aged five-17 years with a diagnosis of NE according to the
