Leiomyomas are prevalent benign smooth muscle tumors in the uterus, displaying variable degrees of FDG uptake on PET/CT. The glucose metabolism intensity of those lesions relies on biologic features and markedly increased FDG accumulation is more typically related to malignant diseases, as in the case of leiomyosarcomas. Notwithstanding that uterine fibroids typically exhibit mild to moderate FDG uptake, in this article we report a case of unexpectedly intense hypermetabolism of a benign uterine leiomyoma on a PET/CT scan performed for initial staging of a breast cancer patient.

Uterine leiomyomas are one of the most common benign smooth muscle tumors in women, with a prevalence of 20 to 40% in women over the age of 35 years. Fifty percent of them may necessitate treatment, because of bleeding, pelvic pain and infertility. Laparoscopic myomectomy is one of the treatment options. The major concern of myomectomy either by open procedure or by laparoscopy is the bleeding encountered during the operation. One of the methods to reduce the intraoperative blood loss and to prevent excessive bleeding is the clipping of both uterine arteries and aa. ovaricae.

The etiology and pathophysiology of uterine leiomyomas, benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus, are not well understood. To evaluate the role of mitochondria in uterine leiomyoma, we compared electron transport gene expressions of uterine leiomyoma tissue with myometrium tissue in six uterine leiomyoma patients by RT-PCR array. A case of vulvar cellular angiofibroma in a 50-year-old woman was immunohistochemically examined. She presented with a right labial mass which was noticed four years before. Surgical excision of the mass was performed. Histopathological examination revealed typical characteristics of cellular angiofibroma. Immunohistochemically, the lesion was CD34 positive but non-reactive for desmin, smooth muscle actin and S-100 protein. In this article, we present a case of vulvar cellular angiofibroma, a lesion that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of vulvar soft tissue tumors.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (EUS-FNAC) has proven to be of significant value as a diagnostic method for the evaluation of esophageal mesenchymal tumors, such as true leiomyomas. A detailed clinicopathologic study of 21 patients with uterine leiomyosarcoma was undertaken. The diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma was made for those uterine smooth muscle tumors showing cellular atypia and 5-9 mitoses per 10 high-powered fields (M/10 HPF) and those with 10 or more M/10 HPF. BACKGROUND: Angioleiomyoma is a classic painful cutaneous tumor of the limbs of middle aged adults. They are usually a straight-forward histologic diagnosis, being well-circumscribed or encapsulated lesions with both smooth muscle and vascular components.
