Social "status" and biological "status": a comparison of grave goods and skeletal indicators from Pontecagnano.

Comparison of funerary treatment and skeletal biology can be very informative about the interplay of social status and meanings and actual life conditions in ancient communities, but such comparison is rarely done, due in part to the disciplinary separation of bioanthropology and social archaeology in many archaeological traditions. In this paper, we analyze relations between skeletal pathologies and grave goods in a sample of 94 individuals from Pontecagnano (Salerno, Italy, seventh-third centuries BC). The results show that the relationship between health, activity, and social status as expr

The Effect of Self-Compassion on Shame in Post-Event Processing.

Post-event processing (PEP) refers to negative and repetitive thinking following anxiety-inducing social situations and is a maintaining factor in social anxiety. Research has shown that state shame predicts PEP, beyond trait and state social anxiety. Therefore, it may be important for interventions to target shame during the post-event period. Self-compassion interventions have shown promise for PEP, and therefore, the primary purpose of the present study was to examine whether a self-compassion intervention reduces state shame during the post-event period. Participants (N = 73) completed a v

Editorial: What to Do About Rigid, Repetitive Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Rigid, repetitive behaviors (RRBs) as a part of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are perplexing and challenging to treat effectively. First, how is it that they associate with deficits in social communication and social interaction to create a strong symptomatic association for the DSM-5 diagnosis of ASD?1 Deficits in social communication make sense in how they define a developmental disorder, but what is the mechanism by which social interaction and RRBs connect to define the classification of ASD? Perhaps it is that, rather than by neurotransmitters or linked structural brain regions, ASD is a

Social determinants of oral health among adults in Saudi Arabia: a narrative review.

Oral health is an integral component of general health and quality of life; however, oral diseases remain unevenly distributed due to social, economic, and contextual factors. In Saudi Arabia, adults experience a substantial burden of dental caries, periodontal disease, and related conditions, with evidence suggesting marked disparities across socioeconomic and demographic groups. Despite growing research attention, evidence on the social determinants of oral health among Saudi adults remains fragmented. This narrative review aimed to synthesize existing evidence on the social determinants of

Social Disconnection in Schizophrenia and the General Community.

Social disability is a defining characteristic of schizophrenia and a substantial public health problem. It has several components that are difficult to disentangle. One component, social disconnection, occurs extensively in the general community among nonhelp-seeking individuals. Social disconnection is an objective, long-standing lack of social/family relationships and minimal participation in social activities. It is associated with negative health effects, including early mortality, and is distinct from subjective loneliness. These 2 topics, social disability in schizophrenia and social di

Cross-Sectional Study of Young Adults Diagnosed With Juvenile Fibromyalgia: Social Support and Its Impact on Functioning and Mood.

PURPOSE: Juvenile-onset fibromyalgia (JFM) affects physical, social, and emotional functioning. Little is known about how social support and social interactions are impacted in the transition to young adulthood for patients diagnosed with JFM. METHODS: Young adults (Mage = 21.6) diagnosed with JFM during adolescence (N = 94) and matched healthy controls (N = 33) completed measures of social network size and diversity, perceived social support, physical functioning, and depressive symptoms as part of a cross-sectional survey study. RESULTS: No difference in social network diversity was found,

Damaged goods: return to sender. A review of the historical medical records of repatriated Chinese miners.

After the Anglo-Boer (South African) War (1899-1902), there was a shortage of unskilled labor on the South African gold mines. Chinese men were imported to make up for the deficit. This article reviews the records of indentured Chinese mine workers examined for repatriation in 1905. The records tell of high proportions of social disorders, respiratory diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, opium addiction, and injury. These reflect the social and physical conditions to which these men were exposed in the mines.

Partner-related attachment as a moderator of outcome in patients with social anxiety disorder-a comparison between short-term cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic therapy.

This study investigated whether partner-related attachment characteristics differentially predict premature treatment termination as well as posttreatment and 1-year follow-up outcome in patients with social anxiety disorder treated with a manualized cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or short-term psychodynamic therapy (PDT) in the SOPHO-NET (Social Phobia Psychotherapy Network) trial. Participants were 412 patients with social anxiety disorder (57% female) with a mean age of 35.4 years (SD = 12.1) who were randomized to either CBT or PDT. Partner-related attachment characteristics were measu

Understanding digital diffusion and online decision-making in public health promotion: a sequential mixed-methods study of the violence prevention charter in Canada.

Digital environments have become important settings for public health promotion, yet dissemination alone does not explain why individuals and organizations choose to adopt and act on public health information. Understanding digital diffusion requires attention to temporal patterns of adoption, the social networks through which information and influence circulate, and the contextual conditions that shape decision-making. This sequential mixed-methods single case study examined the dissemination and voluntary adoption of the Violence Prevention Charter, a principles-based public health initiativ

Psychotherapy, Antidepressants, and Combined Treatment for Depression: A Network Meta-Analysis on Social Functioning Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Social functioning is a key component of recovery in depression, yet most research on first-line treatments focuses on symptom reduction, and comparative evidence on social functioning is limited. We aimed to evaluate the comparative effects of psychotherapy, antidepressant medication, and their combination on social functioning in adults with major depression. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials up to May 1, 2025. Eligible trials compared psychotherapy, antidepressant medication, combined treatment, and control con

Disability dilemmas and rehabilitation tensions: a twentieth century inheritance.

Although disability has gradually become part of the social justice concept in Western nations since the seventeenth century, and is a current world-wide social concern, it is no way as readily definable or determinable as race, gender, age or even poverty, other issues of social justice. It remains a relative term despite efforts to contain it. The World Health Organization's definition for disability is a restriction or lack of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being, arising as a consequence of physiological, psychological or anat

Nobody's "Prfect"! The effect of manipulating perfectionism on social anxiety symptoms.

Social anxiety is a common experience that ranges from mild, temporary distress to excessive, persistent, and impairing fear. The current study tested whether perfectionism contributes to social anxiety symptoms and post-event processing (PEP) in the context of a contract-based manipulation to shift perfectionism. The manipulation asked participants to perform everything to a specific standard level for the following 24 hrs to shift perfectionism. Participants completed measures of social anxiety and perfectionism before delivering a speech. Next, participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 3

Role of acute social stress in the rewarding effects of MDMA in adolescent mice.

Drug use among adolescents is a serious problem in our society, as some individuals develop dependence and addiction. MDMA/Esctasy is one of the most typically used substances by this age group. It is well known that environmental factors can alter the rewarding properties of drugs and the propensity to drug-related disorders. In this sense, exposure to social stress induces long-term effects in mice, enhancing the rewarding effects of MDMA in the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. On the other hand, previous research has not provided conclusive results regarding the short-term effec

Reducing anorexia nervosa stigma: an exploration of a social consensus intervention and the moderating effect of blameworthy attributions.

Background: Research suggests that blameworthy attributions towards individuals with anorexia nervosa are common, which in turn elicit more stigmatising attitudes towards those with the disorder. The social consensus approach has been found to reduce stigmatising attitudes in various domains and, as such, is a promising avenue to pursue for ameliorating stigma in anorexia nervosa.Aims: The present study primarily sought to investigate the effectiveness of a social consensus approach in reducing stigma towards individuals with anorexia nervosa. The study also examined if blameworthy attribution

Cognitive and social impairments in patients with superficial siderosis.

Superficial siderosis of the CNS is a rare condition, caused by deposition of haemosiderin in the superficial layers of the CNS due to repeated chronic subarachnoid or intraventricular haemorrhage. Typically, the hindbrain structures, especially the cerebellum, are most affected. There is a surprising lack of studies investigating in detail the behavioural functioning of patients with such a condition. In this study, we document for the first time the cognitive, social and emotional processing of six patients with a confirmed clinical diagnosis of superficial siderosis. They were aged between

A health intervention programme for children with albinism at a special school in South Africa.

The genetic condition albinism has a high frequency among the Sotho people of northern South Africa. Affected children have pale hair, eyes and skin-a dramatic contrast to the normal dark pigmentation. Their visual performance is poor and many attend special schools for the visually impaired. Children with albinism experience problems that are, on the one hand, physiological, and, on the other, social-psychological and educational in nature. In this self-report study 38 children at a rural special school described their eye and skin problems, a direct result of their lack of pigmentation, as w

Perceived social support improves health-related quality of life in cochlear implant patients.

PURPOSE: Perceived social support has been shown to positively correlate with health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in a variety of conditions. This study investigated whether perceived social support is affecting HR-QoL of patients who receive a cochlear implant (CI) for deafness. METHODS: Eighty eight adults (56 males, 32 females; mean age: 60 years) with a uni- or bilateral CI for bilateral high-grade hearing loss were administered two questionnaires: a questionnaire for perceived social support (FSU-14) and the Nijmegen Cochlear Implant Questionnaire (NCIQ) for hearing-specific HR-QoL.

Development and validation of the Social Touch Experiences and Attitudes Questionnaire-Chinese version (STEAQ-C): How interpersonal touch relates to subclinical traits and symptoms.

Social touch has a vital role in human development and psychological well-being. However, there is a lack of measures assessing individual differences in social touch experiences and attitudes, especially under Eastern cultures. This study developed the Social Touch Experiences and Attitudes Questionnaire - Chinese version (STEAQ-C) and examined its psychometric properties with healthy young Chinese adults. In Study 1, an item pool was generated and principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify the factor structure of the STEAQ. Study 2 recruited an independent sample and examined it

Looking for capacities rather than vulnerabilities: The moderating effect of health assets on the associations between adverse social position and health.

To increase capacities and control over health, it is necessary to foster assets (i.e. factors enhancing abilities of individuals or communities). Acting as a buffer, assets build foundations for overcoming adverse conditions and improving health. However, little is known about the distribution of assets and their associations with social position and health. In this study, we documented the distribution of health assets and examined whether these assets moderate associations between adverse social position and self-reported health. A representative population-based cross-sectional survey of a
