Assessment of health-related quality of life in Turkish patients with facial prostheses.

BACKGROUND: Facial prostheses are intended to provide a non-operative rehabilitation for patients with acquired facial defects. By improving aesthetics and quality of life (QOL), this treatment involves reintegration of the patient into family and social life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the perception of QOL in adult patients with facial prostheses and to compare this perception with that of a control group. METHODS: The study participants consisted of 72 patients, who were divided into three equal-sized groups according to the type of prosthesis (OP- orbital prosthesis, AP- auricu

The role of self-regulating abilities in long-term weight loss in severely obese children and adolescents undergoing intensive combined lifestyle interventions (HELIOS); rationale, design and methods.

BACKGROUND: Adequate treatment of severe childhood obesity is important given its serious social, psychological and physical consequences. Self-regulation may be a crucial determinant of treatment success. Yet, little is known about the role that self-regulation and other psychosocial factors play in the long-term outcome of obesity treatment in severely obese children and adolescents. In this paper, we describe the design of a study that aims to determine whether the ability to self-regulate predicts long-term weight loss in severely obese children and adolescents. An additional objective is t

Co-creating harm reduction resources with young people who use nitrous oxide: What catches their attention?

BACKGROUND: Nitrous oxide (N2O), colloquially known as "laughing gas", is a dissociative anaesthetic that has become increasingly popular among young people as a recreational drug. Social media and messaging platforms have made N2O more accessible. As avid users of social media, young people are well-positioned to contribute to the development of digitalised harm reduction resources. This study draws on young people with N2O experience to develop harm reduction resources for dissemination on social media. METHODS: This study comprised four stages, utilising a co-creation approach with young p

Psychological responses and factors associated with depression and anxiety in entry personnel under quarantine during pandemic in China.

BACKGROUND: The global COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted critical concerns surrounding mental health. Social isolation measures, such as the quarantine of incoming travelers, are essential public health strategies for the prevention and control of infectious diseases. However, quarantine can lead to adverse psychological outcomes, including feelings of confinement, boredom, perceived scarcity of supplies and information, financial hardship, and social stigma. This study aims to assess the mental states of quarantined individuals, investigate the factors affecting their mental well-being, and e

Nature-Based Interventions for Individuals with Psychiatric Disorders: A Mixed Methods Systematic Review with Random-Effects Meta-Analysis of Mental Health and Functional Outcomes.

Nature-based interventions (NBIs) are increasingly used in mental health services, but their effectiveness in people with psychiatric disorders, and how these individuals experience them, remains unclear. This review synthesised quantitative and qualitative evidence on NBIs in psychiatric populations. Eligible studies evaluated outdoor NBIs against controlled comparators, excluding neurodevelopmental/degenerative conditions and indoor or virtual interventions. Quantitative outcomes were synthesised using random-effects meta-analysis; qualitative data were analysed using thematic synthesis. Twe

Vision plays a calibrating role in discriminating threat-related vocal emotions.

The ability to reliably discriminate vocal expressions of emotion is crucial to engage in successful social interactions. This process is arguably more crucial for blind individuals, since they cannot extract social information from faces and bodies, and therefore chiefly rely on voices to infer the emotional state of their interlocutors. Blind have demonstrated superior abilities in several aspects of auditory perception, but research on their ability to discriminate vocal features is still scarce and has provided unclear results. Here, we used a gating psychophysical paradigm to test whether

When action prediction grows old: An fMRI study.

Predicting the unfolding of others' actions (action prediction) is crucial for successfully navigating the social world and interacting efficiently. Age-related changes in this domain have remained largely unexplored, especially for predictions regarding simple gestures and independent of contextual information or motor expertise. Here, we evaluated whether healthy aging impacts the neurophysiological processes recruited to anticipate, from the observation of implied-motion postures, the correct conclusion of simple grasping and pointing actions. A color-discrimination task served as a control

Development and validation of the Premorbid Childhood Traits Questionnaire (PCT-Q) in eating disorders.

PURPOSE: Some features of eating disorders (EDs) are often present in childhood before the onset of the ED. We developed a novel questionnaire to retrospectively capture such childhood traits. METHODS: Focus groups were conducted at the University of California-San Diego, USA, and at the University of Turin, Italy. Three focus groups were conducted at each site, interviewing patients and parents to identify those traits that most commonly characterize childhood of patients with EDs. A preliminary version of the Premorbid Childhood Traits Questionnaire (PCT-Q) derived from these focus groups w

Mechanisms of action in AWARE: A culturally informed intervention for 1.5- and 2nd-generation Asian American women.

Young Asian American women have high rates of depression and suicidality; however, few interventions address the urgent need for culturally informed care. Asian Women's Action for Resilience and Empowerment (AWARE) aims to be the first gender and culturally specific group psychotherapy intervention designed to improve mental and sexual health in Asian American women with trauma. This article specifically focuses on identifying the mechanisms of action that were responsible for improving mental health and well-being among those who participated in AWARE randomized controlled trial. Of the 435 w

Amygdala hyperactivation to angry faces in intermittent explosive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with intermittent explosive disorder (IED) were previously found to exhibit amygdala hyperactivation and relatively reduced orbital medial prefrontal cortex (OMPFC) activation to angry faces while performing an implicit emotion information processing task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This study examines the neural substrates associated with explicit encoding of facial emotions among individuals with IED. METHOD: Twenty unmedicated IED subjects and twenty healthy, matched comparison subjects (HC) underwent fMRI while viewing blocks of angry, happ

Patients' perspectives on actinic keratosis.

Many factors influence patients' perspectives on actinic keratosis (AK). The wish to keep a sense of control prompts many to seek information, which they then interpret according to their personal perspective. Speculations regarding the risk of getting skin cancer and emotional reactions may be expected due to worries about the worsening of the condition, losing control, and participating in UV-related activities. In their contact with physicians, treatment can be an additional issue. Treatment of AK may cause pain and may in itself result in a perceived diminished quality of life. The Actinic

Locus of control and behavior in treatment groups.

Studied the Rotter Locus of Control scale for effective prediction of behavior in small groups. Subjects were 205 male VA Hospital patients participating in self-directed groups who completed the AGCT, Psychological and Somatic Symptom Scales, and Rotter's I-E measure of locus of control. Group behavior was measured through sociometry and a Group Member Evaluation form. Three hypotheses were not supported: (a) Persons scoring high in the direction of internal control (internals) will be more likely to act to influence their social environment; (b) internals will be more active than externals i

The Role of Digital Opinion Leaders in Dengue Prevention Through Health Promotion and Public Health Collaboration: Qualitative Semistructured Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a significant public health concern. The advent of social media has introduced digital opinion leaders (DOLs), health care professionals with substantial online followings who play a pivotal role in disseminating health information and combating misinformation. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the role of DOLs in dengue prevention and explore their preferences for collaboration with health sector entities to strengthen dengue prevention initiatives. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using semistructured interviews with 37 purposively selected DOLs from

Optimising psychological treatment for Anxiety DisordErs in Pregnancy (ADEPT): study protocol for a feasibility trial of time-intensive CBT versus weekly CBT.

BACKGROUND: Moderate to severe anxiety disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social phobia and panic disorder are common, and affect approximately 11-16% of women in pregnancy. Psychological treatments for anxiety disorders, primarily cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), have a substantial evidence base and recently time-intensive versions have been found as effective as weekly treatments. However, this has not been trialled in women who are pregnant, where a shorter intervention may be desirable. METHODS: The ADEPT study is a feasibility

Social and epidemiological aspects of guinea worm control.

Dracunculiasis prevention should be simple: in a population at risk, everyone may be protected by the filtration of drinking water. The research described in this paper allowed the authors to follow the acceptance of new information by villagers in nine localities in Mali. Two strategies were studied: safe water supply (bore-hole or cement lined wells) plus health education on the one hand, and health education alone (based on filtration) on the other. Safe water supply is undoubtedly an effective strategy whereas the success of the health education intervention is uncertain. This experience s

Critically Exploring Self-Harm Through Lived Experience Perspectives: A Survivor-Controlled Integrative Review Employing Participatory Methodology.

INTRODUCTION: In psychiatric knowledge, self-harm is commonly understood as an individual, self-destructive behaviour arising from emotional dysregulation where sociocultural context is referred to briefly but typically overlooked. Conversely, many with lived experience (LE) highlight relational and systemic trauma, abuse and violence as inseparable from self-harm. This survivor-controlled integrative review was led by a LE researcher and employed participatory methodology with people with LE to explore self-harm. Our research question was 'How is self-harm conceptualised?'. METHODS: Evidence

Contemporary media campaigns for musculoskeletal pain: A systematic review and meta-analysis with social marketing benchmarking.

Musculoskeletal pain is a global public health problem. Social marketing aims to increase adoption of desired behaviours in target audiences and may uncover new strategies to improve uptake of helpful pain-related behaviours at the population-level. We systematically evaluated effects of contemporary mass media campaigns targeting musculoskeletal pain and used social marketing benchmarking to explore strategies associated with campaign success. Published evaluations of campaigns involving an online/digital component and a comparator/control condition were eligible. The primary outcome was popu
