Housing environments, social isolation, and mortality among low-income older renters in the United States.

Housing environments constitute a fundamental social determinant of health in later life, yet little is known about how different housing contexts shape survival among economically vulnerable older adults. This study examines whether mortality among low-income older renters follows a graded housing ecology and whether the consequences of social isolation are conditioned by residential context. Using twelve waves (2011-2022) of nationally representative data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study, we analyze 2790 low-income renters (9337 person-wave observations). Mortality risk was es

Relational treatment strategies increase social approach behaviors in patients with Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder.

We incorporated strategies based on relational and interpersonal circumplex research within a standard cognitive-behavioral regimen for Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder (GSAD, Generalized Social Phobia) to determine whether these techniques increased the social approach behaviors that facilitate relationship development. Individuals seeking treatment for GSAD were randomly assigned to either the integrated interpersonal cognitive-behavioral group treatment (ICBT) or a wait list condition (WL). Results revealed that the interpersonal techniques were readily implemented by the majority of pat

Attention processes in the maintenance and treatment of social phobia: hypervigilance, avoidance and self-focused attention.

Four domains of evidence regarding the relationship between attention and social phobia are reviewed: (1) possible maintaining factor, (2) causal relationship, (3) specific relationship and (4) mediator of change during treatment. Two areas of research are covered and integrated: vigilance-avoidance of social threat stimuli and self-focused attention. There is empirical support for these processes as possible maintaining factors that are specific to patients and non-clinical samples with high levels of social anxiety. There is reasonable evidence to promote the use of attentional strategies in

Acquisition and generalization of social skills by high school students with mild mental retardation.

Initial acquisition of social skills by high school students with mild mental retardation was measured during the social skills training game Stacking the Deck. Generalization probes were conducted outside of the training setting (immediately preceding and following training, and 6 weeks posttraining). Due to the high degree of dissimilarity between stimuli in and outside of the training setting, we hypothesized that generalization of skills to nontraining environments would be minimal. Two replications of an initial single-case study were conducted. Students demonstrated acquisition of social

Evidence accumulation during self-referential social processing captures social functioning and psychopathology dimensions in a transdiagnostic sample.

BACKGROUND: Psychosis, social anxiety, and autism are clinical constructs that share important phenotypic features, particularly social dysfunction. A critical determinant of social functioning is an individual's ability to recognize when social cues, such as eye gaze, are meant for them. Emerging computational modeling data in psychosis suggest that altered gaze perception stems from deficits in evidence accumulation - the process of gathering and integrating information - when processing social cues. We investigated whether aberrant evidence accumulation during gaze perception is associated

The neurocognitive impact of loneliness and social networks on social adaptation.

Social adaptation arises from the interaction between the individual and the social environment. However, little empirical evidence exists regarding the relationship between social contact and social adaptation. We propose that loneliness and social networks are key factors explaining social adaptation. Sixty-four healthy subjects with no history of psychiatric conditions participated in this study. All participants completed self-report questionnaires about loneliness, social network, and social adaptation. On a separate day, subjects underwent a resting state fMRI recording session. A hierar

Social phobia. Longitudinal course and long-term outcome of cognitive-behavioral treatment.

Interest in social phobia has increased dramatically in the past decade, and our knowledge of this previously understudied disorder has increased as well. We now know that social phobia is a chronic condition and that patients with this disorder are unlikely to experience significant improvement without intervention. It is also a highly prevalent condition affecting as many as 13% of the adult population of the Unites States. Although our understanding of the causes of social phobia remains limited, we do know that it is associated with serious impairment and disability in multiple spheres. Th

The patient advisor, an organizational resource as a lever for an enhanced oncology patient experience (PAROLE-onco): a longitudinal multiple case study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Quebec is one of the Canadian provinces with the highest rates of cancer incidence and prevalence. A study by the Rossy Cancer Network (RCN) of McGill university assessed six aspects of the patient experience among cancer patients and found that emotional support is the aspect most lacking. To improve this support, trained patient advisors (PAs) can be included as full-fledged members of the healthcare team, given that PA can rely on their knowledge with experiencing the disease and from using health and social care services to accompany cancer patients, they could help to round ou

Experiences of caregivers providing care to fully dependent individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Caregiving for individuals diagnosed with fully dependent schizophrenia is a multidimensional process that extends far beyond providing physical assistance. It profoundly influences caregivers' emotional, physical, social, and economic well-being. Understanding these experiences is essential for developing holistic and sustainable care models that support both patients and caregivers. AIM: This study aimed to explore and interpret the lived experiences of caregivers providing continuous care to fully dependent individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, with a focus on the emotional

Design and validation of a community resilience scale in contexts of adversity.

BACKGROUND: Community Resilience has drawn growing interest over recent decades. It is now a key variable in social research and in studies … eliable measure with adequate convergent validity with communal mastery, subjective well-being, and social integration. It showed little correlation with individual resilience. Configural and metric invariance, as well as partial scalar invariance, were observed across countries (CFI = 0.961; SRMR = 0.048; RMSEA = 0.055). CONCLUSION: These findings provide initial …

Structural and social determinants of health: The multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have increasingly recognized the importance of structural and social determinants of health (SSDOH) as key drivers of a multitude of diseases and health outcomes. The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) is an ongoing, longitudinal cohort study of subclinical cardiovascular disease (CVD) that has followed geographically and racially/ethnically diverse participants starting in 2000. Since its inception, MESA has incorporated numerous SSDOH assessments and instruments to study in relation to CVD and aging outcomes. In this paper, we describe the SSDOH data availab

I've got a friend somewhere: control of social behavior across striatal subregions.

Most animals and humans are inherently social, enabling group dynamics to promote survival. Despite their importance, how the brain calibrates appropriate social behaviors to maximize survival and benefits remains incompletely understood. Distributed networks of neural circuits mediate complex behavioral states, including social behaviors. The striatum has long-known to be a structure essential for motivation and goal-directed behavior. The striatum is massive: it extends far along the anterior-posterior axis and can be divided into ventral, dorsal, and posterior domains. While it is well-appr

Navigating Challenges with Trust and Creativity: Adolescents' Experiences of COVID-19 in Iceland.

In this study, we explore the relational dimensions of resilience among adolescents in Iceland during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the frameworks of social-ecological resilience and the embodied, social, and public child, we examine how resilience manifests through interactions with family, peers, and community. Participants employed tactical trust and creative strategies to navigate restrictions, transforming digital and physical spaces into sources of social connection. Their critical engagement with public health policies highlighted vulnerability as integral to resilience. Our findings rev

Worker bees preventing diapause in Bombus terrestris queens via tyrosine metabolism.

The reproductive dormancy (diapause) of bumblebee queens is a major bottleneck for controlled pollination services. We demonstrate that direct social interaction with worker bees rapidly terminates queen diapause and triggers oviposition, bypassing the need for hibernation. This worker bee induction, especially when combined with CO2 treatment, significantly shortens the time to egg-laying compared to conventional methods. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses identified the activation of tyrosine metabolism as the central mechanism driving this socially induced reproductive switc

Psychosocial factors and cardiovascular diseases.

Rapidly accruing evidence from a diversity of disciplines supports the hypothesis that psychosocial factors are related to morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular diseases. We review relevant literature on (a) negative emotional states, including depression, anger and hostility, and anxiety; (b) chronic and acute psychosocial stressors; and (c) social ties, social support, and social conflict. All three of these psychosocial domains have been significantly associated with increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We also discuss critical pathophysiological mechanisms and

Visions: Power as Knowing Participation in Change: Lessons in Social Justice Advocacy for Undergraduate STEM Students.

This article applies Barrett's theory of Power as Knowing Participation in Change (PKPC) to teaching social justice advocacy to undergraduate college students. The author designed and implemented a seminar that integrated PKPC principles through experiential learning, multimedia resources, and reflective assignments, using the HIV advocacy movement as a case study to demonstrate how awareness, choice, intentional action, and involvement in change can address social inequities. Students created advocacy projects addressing contemporary social inequities by identifying a group power profile and

Social stress induces neurovascular pathology promoting depression.

Studies suggest that heightened peripheral inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder. We investigated the effect of chronic social defeat stress, a mouse model of depression, on blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability and infiltration of peripheral immune signals. We found reduced expression of the endothelial cell tight junction protein claudin-5 (Cldn5) and abnormal blood vessel morphology in nucleus accumbens (NAc) of stress-susceptible but not resilient mice. CLDN5 expression was also decreased in NAc of depressed patients. Cldn5 downregulation was sufficient

Describing adolescent breastfeeding environments through focus groups in an urban community.

PURPOSE: Breastfeeding is a potential solution to improve health outcomes for adolescent mothers and infants. Adolescence is a risk factor for low breastfeeding rates and is associated with a higher risk for perinatal complication. This study investigated facilitators and barriers to adolescent breastfeeding initiation and duration in an urban setting. METHODS: Four, 1-hour focus groups were conducted. Twenty-nine (N = 29) adolescent mothers and pregnant adolescents participated and described attitudes toward breastfeeding, attitudes among family and friends, current knowledge, and barriers a
