Nonverbal expressive behaviour in schizophrenia and social phobia.

Expressive behaviour plays a crucial role in the success of social interactions. Abnormality of expressive behaviour has been reported in interpersonal interactions of patients suffering from schizophrenia and social phobia, two debilitating mental disorders with important social deficits. However, no study has compared the expressive behaviour in these two disorders. Thirty schizophrenia patients, 21 social phobia patients and 30 healthy controls were evaluated and compared on expressive, cognitive and clinical dimensions. Expressive behaviour was assessed using the Motor Affective subscale o…

Having friends and Rett syndrome: how social relationships create meaningful contexts for limited skills.

PURPOSE: The experiences of a teenage girl with Rett syndrome who was being educated in an inclusive middle school are described to provide a better understanding of how social relationships create meaningful contexts for individuals with limited skills. The case example is used to illustrate the principle that contexts (including expectancies, acceptance, philosophical principles) can be designed to support meaningful social relationships, despite social and intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Naturalistic observations of social interactions over a two year period are reported to illustrate t…

Gender-Specific Effects of Social Participation on Depression Among Older Chinese: A Longitudinal Analysis.

Social participation plays a crucial role in mental well-being, yet its effects on depression in older adults vary depending on the type of activity and social context. This study investigates the gender-specific influences of changes in social participation over time and various types of social participation on depression among older Chinese. Using two waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study data, binary logistic regression results show that continuous engagement in multiple social activities is linked to a lower risk of depression in older adults aged 60 and above, and ge

Investigating social drones for recreational running through co-design.

INTRODUCTION: Human-drone interaction is an emerging field investigating ways to extend the conventionally passive role of drones with autonomous, socially interactive functionalities. Drones offer unique opportunities for applications, such as exercise support, due to their mobility and flexibility. While previous research has studied drones for, e.g., pacing, gait analysis, and accessibility in running contexts, we propose that an equally crucial part of such applications is the socially interactive role of the drone. METHODS: We present a study in two phases. In the first phase, we conduct

D-Cycloserine ameliorates social alterations that result from prenatal exposure to valproic acid.

Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) alters rodent social interactions in a dose-dependent way: exposure to a high dose of VPA (>500 mg/kg) mid-gestation decreases social interactions whereas a moderate dose of VPA (350 mg/kg) increases peer-directed social behavior. The moderate dose also decreases expression of the mRNA for serine in amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex. In this study, we examined whether d-cycloserine could ameliorate VPA-induced alterations in ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), social interactions, and locomotor activity. Pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were given intraperinto…

Sociability and motor functions in Shank1 mutant mice.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by aberrant reciprocal social interactions, impaired communication, and repetitive behaviors. While the etiology remains unclear, strong evidence exists for a genetic component, and several synaptic genes have been implicated. SHANK genes encode a family of synaptic scaffolding proteins located postsynaptically on excitatory synapses. Mutations in SHANK genes have been detected in several autistic individuals. To understand the consequences of SHANK mutations relevant to the diagnostic and associated symptoms of autism, comprehensive behavi…

Out of touch? How trauma shapes the experience of social touch - Neural and endocrine pathways.

Trauma can shape the way an individual experiences the world and interacts with other people. Touch is a key component of social interactions, but surprisingly little is known about how trauma exposure influences the processing of social touch. In this review, we examine possible neurobiological pathways through which trauma can influence touch processing and lead to touch aversion and avoidance in trauma-exposed individuals. Emerging evidence indicates that trauma may affect sensory touch thresholds by modulating activity in the primary sensory cortex and posterior insula. Disturbances in mul…

Loneliness and Social Isolation in Older Adults.

Loneliness is a distressing feeling that accompanies the perception that one's social needs are not being met by the quantity or the quality of one's social relationships. It is a subjective experience of a perceived discrepancy between the preferred and actual level and quality of social interaction.1 In contrast, social isolation is an objective lack of meaningful and sustained social contacts, interactions, networks or belonging. Social isolation describes a paucity of social relationships, while loneliness depicts the lived experience and recognition of that absence.2 Although sometimes us…

A multilevel analysis of the interpersonal behavior of socially anxious people.

We investigate the interpersonal behavior of socially anxious (SA) and non-socially anxious (NSA) individuals at three different levels of analysis, focusing on the dimensions of warmth and dominance. Study 1 examines self-reported general interaction styles, Study 2 explores behavior occurring within the context of a single interaction, and in Study 3 we focus on the performance of a single conversational act (a disagreement). Studies 1 and 2 adopt the framework of Interpersonal Circumplex Theory (IPC; Kiesler, 1983), which is well suited for studying trait-level and interaction-level social

Social Understanding and Friendships in Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or Dyslexia.

Social understanding relies upon children's experience of the world and their communicative interaction with others. Opportunities to engage in cooperative social interaction, such as friendships, can foster the development of social understanding. Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia often have friendships of poorer quality. The present study examined relationships and differences in social understanding and friendship quality in children with ADHD or dyslexia, in comparison to neurotypically developing children (NTD). Participants were 192 primary-school…

The Intersections of Ethnicity, Nativity Status and Socioeconomic Position in Relation to Periodontal Status: A Cross-Sectional Study in London, England.

The role of migration as a social determinant of periodontitis has been overlooked. Intersectionality theory could help understand how immigration status interacts with other social determinants of health to engender inequalities in periodontitis. The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether ethnicity, nativity status and socioeconomic position intersect to structure social inequalities in periodontal status. Data from 1936 adults in a deprived and multi-ethnic area of London were analysed. The numbers of teeth with probing depth and clinical attachment loss were determined from

The effect of emotional working memory training on emotional and cognitive outcomes in individuals with elevated social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Although cognitive-behavioural therapy is the gold standard psychological treatment for individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD), it does not benefit everyone. Emotional working memory training (eWMT) is a promising alternative intervention. This study examined the effects of eWMT versus control training (CT) on emotional and cognitive outcomes in individuals with elevated social anxiety. METHODS: Forty participants with elevated social anxiety were randomly allocated to eWMT (n = 21) or CT (n = 19), each consisting of six training sessions. At pre- and post-training, partic

Evidence for the involvement of genetic variation in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) in the etiology of autistic disorders on high-functioning level.

An increasing number of animal studies advert to a substantial role of the neuropeptide oxytocin in the regulation of social attachment and affiliation. Furthermore, animal studies showed anxiety and stress-reduced effects of oxytocin. First human studies confirm these findings in animal studies and implicate a crucial role of oxytocin in human social attachment behavior and in social interactions. Thus, the oxytocin system might be involved in the impairment of social interaction and attachment in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The human oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) represents a plausible …

Hypergraph Mamba Reasoning-Based Social Relation Recognition.

Recognizing social relations from images is crucial for improving machine perception of social interactions. Current studies mainly focus on exploring single-type relation reasoning frameworks, such as the relation between father, mother and son in a family. However, real-world scenarios often involve complex hybrid relations, such as friendships and professional relations, which pose a challenge for current methods due to the difficulty of establishing robust logical connections between these relations. In fact, in this hybrid social relation recognition setting, the interactions extend beyon…

Efficacy and neural mechanisms of transcranial direct current stimulation for social function in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the intervention effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on social functioning and neurophysiological indicators in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and to explore neuro-behavioral consistency at the individual and cross-study levels. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library from inception until January 7, 2026. We excluded studies involving exclusively adult cohorts and included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting both social behavioral and

Examining the Effects of Ostracism and Overinclusion in the Eating Disorder Binge Spectrum: Evidence From a Controlled Cyberball Task.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (ED), including bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED), are characterised by dysfunctional eating behaviours and maladaptive emotional regulation tied to concerns about body image. This study investigates the emotional and cognitive impacts of social exclusion and overinclusion on individuals with ED using the Cyberball task, a computerised simulation of social interaction, to examine the role of early maladaptive schemas (EMS) in these responses. METHOD: The sample included 124 women: 34 with BN, 26 with BED, and 64 controls, assigned to either an os…
