Belonging and doing: important factors for satisfaction with sexual relations as perceived by people with persistent mental illness.

BACKGROUND: It is increasingly acknowledged that satisfaction with sexual relations forms an important aspect of people's lives, but little is known of factors associated with this phenomenon among people with mental illness. AIM: This study aimed to investigate how demographic, social, clinical, and health-related factors were related to satisfaction with sexual relations. METHODS: Patients with persistent mental illness (N = 103), recruited from an outpatient unit, were assessed regarding the target variables. RESULTS: No clinical variable, and only one demographic factor, namely being a

Motivations and Barriers to Sustained PrEP Use Among Men in Buffalo City Metro, South Africa: A Qualitative Study.

Men in sub-Saharan Africa experience disproportionately poor HIV outcomes, yet their engagement with HIV prevention services remains limited. Although oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective HIV prevention strategy, relatively little research has examined the factors that support men's sustained use of PrEP after initiation. We conducted a qualitative sub-study among men who initiated PrEP through a community-based HIV prevention program in Buffalo City Metro, South Africa. Men who returned for their three-month PrEP refill were invited to complete an in-depth interview. Thematic

Exploring the workload of informal caregiving in the context of HIV/NCD multimorbidity in South Africa.

The importance of informal caregiving for chronic illness has been well established in African contexts but is underexplored in the context of HIV/NCD multimorbidity, particularly in South Africa. Building on treatment burden theories that investigate workload in the context of chronic illness, this paper explores how informal caregiving networks impact the capacity of people living with multimorbidity (PLWMM) in low-income settings in urban and rural South Africa. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were carried out with thirty people living with multimorbidity and sixteen informal caregiv

Dorsal and ventral attention systems underlie social and symbolic cueing.

Eye gaze is a powerful cue for orienting attention in space. Studies examining whether gaze and symbolic cues recruit the same neural mechanisms have found mixed results. We tested whether there is a specialized attentional mechanism for social cues. We separately measured BOLD activity during orienting and reorienting attention following predictive gaze and symbolic cues. Results showed that gaze and symbolic cues exerted their influence through the same neural networks but also produced some differential modulations. Dorsal frontoparietal regions in left intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and bilate

Bilingualism in Context: A Bayesian Psychometric Network Analysis of Language and Culture Among U.S. Heritage Spanish-English Speakers of Latin American Descent.

Bilingualism has increasingly been understood as a multidimensional and context-sensitive experience, prompting growing interest in how specific aspects of bilingual language use relate to cognition. We used Bayesian psychometric network analysis to examine how bilingual language practices, bicultural identity management, and cognition relate within the same system in a sample of 404 U.S.-born heritage Spanish-English bilingual adults of Latin American descent. This approach conceptualizes bilingualism as a complex system, quantifies uncertainty in the estimated network structure, and identifi

Association Between Appetite and Physical Activity in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Focusing on Activity Intensity and Duration.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Decreased appetite in older adults is associated with physical activity. Prior research findings have been inconsistent or limited due to methodological differences. Many studies did not adequately control for psychological or social confounders on appetite. Therefore, we aimed to assess the relationships among appetite, physical activity, psychological factors, and social factors in community-dwelling older adults. We investigated how physical activity intensity and time of day could be associated with appetite. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 100 communit

The development of the digital coercion scale (DCS) and its association with suicide crisis syndrome (SCS).

As internet and social network use have risen, rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide have increased. Loss of autonomy and difficulty disengaging from technology may contribute to suicide vulnerability, but no measure currently captures this experience. To address this gap, we developed the Digital Coercion Scale (DCS) to measure perceived loss of autonomy related to ubiquitous technology. Eighty-nine psychiatric inpatients completed the DCS. Reliability was evaluated using Cronbach's α and item-total correlations. Construct validity was assessed through correlations with established scales

Distance-dependent reconfiguration of hubs in Alzheimer's disease: a cross-tissue functional network study.

The hubs of the intra-grey matter (GM) network were sensitive to anatomical distance and susceptible to neuropathological damage. However, few studies examined the hubs of cross-tissue distance-dependent networks and their changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Using resting-state fMRI data of 30 AD patients and 37 normal older adults (NC), we constructed the cross-tissue networks based on functional connectivity (FC) between GM and white matter (WM) voxels. In the full-ranged and distance-dependent networks (characterized by gradually increased Euclidean distances between GM and WM voxels), the

Prenatal neural network organization and later executive function development.

Executive function (EF), which includes inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility, supports adaptive behavior and predicts long-term academic, social, and mental health outcomes. While EF-related neural networks mature throughout childhood, their earliest developmental origins remain unclear. Large-scale brain systems begin organizing in utero, but whether fetal connectivity prospectively relates to EF has not been tested. We collected resting-state fMRI from 113 fetuses (26-39 weeks gestation). Executive function at age 5 was assessed using the Behavior Rating Inventory of

Beyond diagnosis: Cross-diagnostic features in canonical resting-state networks in children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) share common behavioural manifestations despite distinct categorical diagnostic criteria. Here, we examined canonical resting-state network connectivity in three diagnostic groups (autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and paediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder) and typically developing controls (TD) in a large single-site sample (N = 407), applying diagnosis-based and dimensional approaches to understand underlying neurobiology across NDDs. Each participant's functional network graphs were computed using five gra

Adherence to medications, lifestyle advice, and self-monitoring for type 2 diabetes and hypertension in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review, meta-analysis, and interactive network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes and hypertension are major public health challenges in sub-Saharan Africa, yet treatment control remains poor. Patient adherence to key treatment pillars (medication, lifestyle advice, and self-monitoring) is essential for treatment control, yet adherence across these pillars has not been comprehensively synthesized. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to map adherence to medication, lifestyle advice, and self-monitoring for type 2 diabetes and hypertension in sub-Saharan Africa, and applied a network analysis to identify cross-cutting determinants as

Functional Breakdown of Temporoparietal Junction Interaction in High-depression Individuals: Evidence from Multi-Metric Connectomics.

Depression involves impaired cognitive, affective, and social functions associated with aberrant brain network interactions. The temporoparietal junction (TPJ), a multisensory integration hub, exhibits depression-related connectivity alterations, yet the roles of its subregions during subclinical stages remain unclear. This study examined TPJ subregional communication in non-clinical high-depression individuals. Resting-state fMRI data from 586 medication-free young adults were analyzed. Participants were divided into high-depression (HD, N = 130) and low-depression (LD, N = 130) groups using

Classifying social anxiety disorder using multivoxel pattern analyses of brain function and structure.

Functional neuroimaging of social anxiety disorder (SAD) support altered neural activation to threat-provoking stimuli focally in the fear network, while structural differences are distributed over the temporal and frontal cortices as well as limbic structures. Previous neuroimaging studies have investigated the brain at the voxel level using mass-univariate methods which do not enable detection of more complex patterns of activity and structural alterations that may separate SAD from healthy individuals. Support vector machine (SVM) is a supervised machine learning method that capitalizes on

Representations of English- and French-speaking Internet users on urinary incontinence: a webometric study.

Urinary incontinence is a major public health problem that affects nearly 9% of the world's population. Numerous studies have defined it, as well as its frequency, contributing factors, means of prevention and therapeutic approaches, but there are very few publications on its social representations. However, the literature raises that a better understanding of the social representations associated with this phenomenon could improve its management. This study focuses on its representations, and more specifically those of Internet users. Its ambition is to bring out some of the representations r
