Beyond toxicity: Systems-level virulence of entomopathogenic fungi in termite social immunity.

Termites live in dense colonies where frequent social contact can facilitate pathogen transmission, but coordinated social immunity can also limit disease spread. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are particularly relevant to termite pathology because they infect primarily through the cuticle, using adhesion, enzymatic degradation, penetration, and internal proliferation to overcome host barriers. This review synthesizes current knowledge on EPF virulence in termites and argues that fungal pathogenicity should be understood not only as direct toxicity (lethal effects of pathogen-derived compounds)

Building Community Resilience Through Trauma-Informed Solutions: Lessons Learned from a Social Accelerator in Rural North Carolina.

Adverse childhood experiences and intergenerational trauma are associated with a variety of negative health outcomes and are particularly prevalent among people of color and those living in rural communities. The social accelerator model offers a novel means of assisting organizations in scaling up their initiatives and increasing their impact. This study investigates the lessons learned from adapting the social accelerator model to address community-level trauma and build resilience in a rural setting. We conducted qualitative interviews with program staff and the initial cohort of participan

[Digitalization and care relationships of people living alone in old age: a critical analysis of policy documents].

Digitalization is transforming social life and relationships. New cultural ideas of care, cooperation and reciprocity are emerging that can create challenges for older people. These are particularly poignant for older people living alone, who use digital devices less frequently and rely on support to manage the increasing number of digital tasks (appointments, bookings, financial matters). This article explores the relationship between digitalization and care relationships among older people living alone using a critical document analysis approach according to Bacchi. This approach makes it po

The Social Appearance Anxiety Scale in Italian Adolescent Populations: Construct Validation and Group Discrimination in Community and Clinical Eating Disorders Samples.

Anxiety in situations where one's overall appearance (including body shape) may be negatively evaluated is hypothesized to play a central role in Eating Disorders (EDs) and in their co-occurrence with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Three studies were conducted among community (N = 1995) and clinical (N = 703) ED samples of 11- to 18-year-old Italian girls and boys to (a) evaluate the psychometric qualities and measurement equivalence/invariance (ME/I) of the Social Appearance Anxiety (SAA) Scale (SAAS) and (b) determine to what extent SAA or other situational domains of social anxiety related

Work-related stress among correctional officers: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Correctional officers (COs) are exposed to various factors likely to jeopardize their health and safety. Even if numerous studies have been focused on work-related stress among COs, few studies have been carried out in Italy. OBJECTIVE: Indentify the work-related factors and comprehend how they negatively affect the COs' psychological health in the Italian penal system. METHODS: A qualitative approach was employed. Twenty-eight COs employed in a detention block of an Italian jail were interviewed face-to-face. For the analyses of the text, Template Analysis technique was followed

Active ingredients of substance use-focused self-help groups.

AIMS AND METHODS: This paper provides an overview of some of the probable active ingredients of self-help groups in light of four related theories that identify common social processes that appear to underlie effective psychosocial treatments for and continuing remission from these disorders. RESULTS: Social control theory specifies active ingredients such as bonding, goal direction and structure; social learning theory specifies the importance of norms and role models, behavioral economics and behavioral choice theory emphasizes involvement in rewarding activities other than substance use, a

The factor structure of autistic traits.

BACKGROUND: Although DSM-IV requires symptoms in three criterion domains for a diagnosis of autistic disorder, the extent to which those domains are phenotypically independent is an unanswered and important question. The identification of 'endophenotypes' of the autistic syndrome may be very useful for genetic and neurobiologic studies of autism, but only if they represent truly independent sub domains of the disorder. METHODS: In this study we examined the factor structure of autistic traits using data from 226 child psychiatric patients with and without pervasive developmental disorders, em

Hyper-tension: a folk illness with a medical name.

Individual illness belief systems form a cognitive structure which lies beneath the cultural and social aspect of health care in a community. Popular belief systems are different from, yet linked to, expert belief systems. Popular illness terms often help support a stable cultural milieu by linking concepts of causes and significance of types of illness problems with a set of health care seeking choices; as well as linking typical physical and psychological symptoms with associated social problems. This study presents an example of how illness beliefs perform these functions in urban, mainstre

Suitability of the DSM-5 social anxiety disorder severity scale for autistic adults.

In autistic adults, measurement tools may not adequately differentiate between autistic characteristics and features of anxiety. This may be particularly evident in the case of social anxiety disorder; however, few measures of social anxiety disorder have been validated for autistic adults. Instead, assessments are often made using measures designed and validated for non-autistic adults. To address this, we examined the suitability of the self-report Severity Measure for Social Anxiety Disorder in 284 autistic adults. We evaluated its psychometric properties, explored a rescored version that a

Interpersonal and economic resources.

High population density and increased institutional specialization, which are relatively novel features of human society. have provided conditions for a more efficient exchange of universalistic resources, while decreasing the opportunity for exchanging particularistic ones. The parallel with physical environment is striking: in both cases technology has created new problems in the process of solving old ones. Whether it is natural resources or interpersonal resources, physical ecology or social ecology, recognizing and defining the new problem is the first step toward its solution. The import

[Social determinants and epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases].

Recent approaches to studies of social determinants and social epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases are reviewed. This approach originating in some industrialized countries has so far been neglected in Croatia in spite of previous experiences and existence of sociomedical tradition. The possible explanations are considered. Obvious health problems related to the standard of living, poverty, high unemployment, work insecurity, unjustified inequality of income, and other forms of discrimination in health are not tackled. The social determinants important for health are defined and at least fi

Scrutinizing the relationship between shyness and social phobia.

The nature of the relationship between shyness and social phobia can be clarified by assessing rates of social phobia in highly shy and normative samples. In the present study, 2202 participants were screened and categorized on a shyness scale as highly shy (90th percentile) or "normatively" shy (40-60th percentile). The Composite International Diagnostic Interview and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Personality Disorders (SCID-II; Avoidant Personality Disorder module) were used to assign clinical diagnoses. Approximately 49% of individuals in the highly shy group had a so

Social tinkering generates complexity, but also system-scale fragility and collective delusions.

The hypothesis that human culture emerges through deliberate, decentralized social tinkering rather than random variation is persuasive. However, the hypothesis is ambiguous about the stability of the resulting structures. Expanding scale may increase fragility and normative conflict, and networks of socially constructed coordination spaces may amplify imaginative disconnection from reality. Consequently, system-scale risks arise that exceed the grasp of governable tinkering.
