Neural correlates of semantic associations in patients with schizophrenia.

Patients with schizophrenia have semantic processing disturbances leading to expressive language deficits (formal thought disorder). The underlying pathology has been related to alterations in the semantic network and its neural correlates. Moreover, crossmodal processing, an important aspect of communication, is impaired in schizophrenia. Here we investigated specific processing abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia with regard to modality and semantic distance in a semantic priming paradigm. Fourteen patients with schizophrenia and fourteen demographically matched controls made visual

The logopenic/phonological variant of primary progressive aphasia.

OBJECTIVE: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is characterized by isolated decline in language functions. Semantic dementia and progressive nonfluent aphasia are accepted PPA variants. A "logopenic" variant (LPA) has also been proposed, but its cognitive and anatomic profile is less defined. The aim of this study was to establish the cognitive and anatomic features of LPA. METHODS: Six previously unreported LPA cases underwent extensive neuropsychological evaluation and an experimental study of phonological loop functions, including auditory and visual span tasks with digits, letters, and word

Swallowing Function in Older Adults: An Association with the Process of Frailty, Functioning, and Clinical and Sociodemographic Aspects.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia and frailty are highly prevalent in older adults and are associated with adverse outcomes. However, the distinction between presbyphagia and pathological dysphagia remains unclear, making assessment difficult. This study aims to verify the association between older adults' swallowing function and the frailty process, global and oral intake functioning, comorbidities, and sociodemographic aspects. METHOD: This is an observational, analytical, cross-sectional study with a non-probabilistic sample of 100 older adults in the process of frailty, treated at a referral center

The association between learning disorders, motor function, and primitive reflexes in pre-school children: A systematic review.

This study aimed to systematically review evidence of the association between learning disorders, motor function, and primitive reflexes in preschool children. Seven databases were systematically searched (EMBASE, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, Medline, PsycINFO, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane) with no restrictions. Inclusion criteria were full text peer-reviewed articles reporting new empirical data, assessing any two of three phenomena in preschool children: learning disorders, motor function, or primitive reflexes. Intervention studies or studies examining congenital, chromosomal or acquire

miRNA Expression Is Increased in Serum from Patients with Semantic Variant Primary Progressive Aphasia.

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) damages the parts of the brain that control speech and language. There are three clinical PPA variants: nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA), logopenic (lvPPA) and semantic (svPPA). The pathophysiology underlying PPA variants is not fully understood, including the role of micro (mi)RNAs which were previously shown to play a role in several neurodegenerative diseases. Using a two-step analysis (array and validation through real-time PCR), we investigated the miRNA expression pattern in serum from 54 PPA patients and 18 controls. In the svPPA cohort, we observed a gene

Assessment of Mental Status.

Assessing the mental status of patients with a neurobehavioral disorder is a critical element in the diagnosis and treatment of these patients. This assessment should always be performed after the patient's history it taken and a general physical as well as a neurologic examination is completed. The mental status examination commences with observing the patient's appearance and level of consciousness. The examiner should also pay attention to patient's social behavior, emotional state and mood. There are 3 major means of assessing a patient's mental status. One type attempts to determine if th

[Dysphagia aortica--case report].

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia aortica is a swallowing condition caused by external compression of the esophagus due to aortic aneurysm or atherosclerotic changes affecting the aorta. The case report on this rare cause of dysphagia should contribute to better diagnosis of dysphagia aortica and swallowing difficulties in general. CASE REPORT: A 63-year-old male patient was hospitalized duo to a four month history of intermittent swallowing difficulties. Chest radiography showed a widened mediastinum and an enlarged aortic arch. Rigid esophagus endoscopy was done in general endotracheal anesthesia. At

Comparative Validity of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's National Outcomes Measurement System, Functional Oral Intake Scale, and G-Codes to Mann Assessment of Swallowing Ability Scores for Dysphagia.

Background The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) advocates using the National Outcomes Measurement System (NOMS) scales to assist speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the mandated assigning of "functional limitation levels" and G-Code for Medicare Part B claims. Unfortunately, not all SLPs have access to this tool, and it is unclear how other common outcome measurement scales relate to ASHA NOMS or G-Codes. To explore the utility of other scales in reporting Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services G-Codes, we conducted a comparative validity study comparing ASHA NOMS Dysph

A Systematic Review of Voice Therapy: What "Effectiveness" Really Implies.

INTRODUCTION: Behavioral voice therapy guided by a speech-language pathologist is recommended as the main treatment approach for many kinds of voice disorders. Encouraging evidence regard of good outcomes from voice therapy has been found in two previous reviews on broad patient populations. However, no definitive conclusion on the effectiveness of direct voice therapy can be drawn from these reviews due to limitations of the included studies. AIMS: To review recent literature on voice therapy; to provide clinicians with a list of evidence-based voice therapy techniques; to incorporate the th

Predicting Patient Needs for Interdisciplinary Services in a Voice and Swallowing Center.

In a subspecialty interdisciplinary voice and swallowing clinic, patient referrals come from a wide variety of disciplines for various reasons, which can make scheduling their initial evaluations challenging. Depending on the nature of complaints and symptoms, patients may best be evaluated either by a single provider (a laryngologist) or by an interdisciplinary team that includes a speech-language pathologist. If not scheduled appropriately, the provider and the patient may lose valuable time, resources, and money. This was a retrospective chart review of 76 patients who received an interdisc

Modifying the two-stage cleft palate surgical correction.

OBJECTIVE: This paper reports the experience with a two-stage approach to surgical correction of the complete cleft palate, wherein timing of the second stage is dependent on the judgment of the speech pathologist and the orthodontist together with the surgeon. PATIENTS: Of a total of 35 patients having complete unilateral clefts a sample of 22 were available for postsurgical assessment. The first-stage repair of the palate was carried out at an average age of 10.7 months (range 6 to 17 months), and the second-stage repair of the residual cleft was completed at an average age of 32.7 months (

Collaboration and conquest: MTD as viewed by voice teacher (singing voice specialist) and speech-language pathologist.

This study was designed as a qualitative case study to demonstrate the process of diagnosis and treatment between a voice team to manage a singer diagnosed with muscular tension dysphonia (MTD). Traditionally, literature suggests that MTD is challenging to treat and little in the literature directly addresses singers with MTD. Data collected included initial medical screening with laryngologist, referral to speech-language pathologist (SLP) specializing in voice disorders among singers, and adjunctive voice training with voice teacher trained in vocology (singing voice specialist or SVS). Development and Validation of a Clinical Risk Score for Post-extubation Dysphagia (CRISPED) in Critically Ill Children.

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a clinical risk score (CRISPED) for predicting post-extubation dysphagia (PED) in critically ill children. We conducted a prospective cohort study in a pediatric intensive care unit of a tertiary hospital (2021-2025). Consecutive children aged 1 month to 15 years requiring invasive mechanical ventilation ≥ 24 h were eligible. PED was defined as Functional Oral Intake Scale < 6 at first post-extubation speech-language pathology (SLP) assessment. The candidate predictors were evaluated using LASSO logistic regression. The cohort was split int…
