BACKGROUND: Severe cerebral artery embolism is a rare complication of facial autologous fat injection. However, its incidence has markedly increased with the recent rise in facial cosmetic procedures.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 31-year-old Chinese woman who presented with unconsciousness 6 h after having undergone a facial autologous fat injection. A neurological examination revealed stupor, bilaterally diminished pupillary light reflexes, right-sided central facial palsy, and no reaction to pain stimulation of right limbs. Diffusion-weighted imaging displayed patchy hyperintense lesions …

Developmental temperature plays important roles in the expression of insect traits through thermal developmental plasticity. We exposed the … er for parasitoids reared at 20 °C. Finally, parasitoids developed at 20 °C showed the highest heat stupor threshold, whereas parasitoids developed at 28 °C showed the highest heat coma threshold (better heat tolerance CTmax1 and CTmax2, respectively), therefore only partly supporting the beneficial acclimation hypothesis. From a fundamental point of vie …

We report a young woman who survived multiple cerebral infarctions related to an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) during labor. To our knowledge, an embolic stroke due to the coexistence of an AFE and patent foramen ovale (PFO) has not been reported. We describe the patient's clinical and radiological features and discuss the stroke mechanism in relation to our AFE hypothesis. A 32-year-old woman presented to the emergency room after experiencing convulsions during labor (blood pressure, 64/28mmHg; oxygen saturation, 67%). She was in a stupor, and her response to painful stimuli on the right side…

BACKGROUND: Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is known as one of the rare, but important, causes of both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Most previously reported VZV-related hemorrhagic stroke and cerebral vasculitis are associated with anterior circulation because VZV spreads from trigeminal ganglia to the anterior circulation of Willis. The present study presents a patient with cerebellar hemorrhage, who was diagnosed with VZV encephalitis and vasculitis of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery.
CASE REPORT: A 75-year-old man with stupor was admitted to our hospital. Computed tomography reve…

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a serious neuropsychiatric complication of cirrhosis in alcoholic patients that is characterized clinically by personality changes, sleep abnormalities, and impaired motor coordination, as well as cognitive dysfunction progressing to stupor and coma. Procedures used for diagnosis and grading of HE include neurologic assessment, electroencephalography, psychometric testing, and use of the critical flicker frequency test. Neuropathologically, HE in cirrhosis is principally a disorder of neuroglia characterized by Alzheimer type II astrocytosis and activation of mic…

Up to date the presentation of transient splenial lesions in corpus callosum were reported in diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) only in epileptic patients and patients under antiepileptic therapy. A 41 year old male with no previous medical history was admitted to our clinic with symptoms of pneumonia. The neurological exam revealed stupor, but when awake his speech and orientation were normal. There were no meningeal irritation signs, cranial nerves, piramidal and cerebellar functions were normal. He had moderate respiratory distress and had bilateral rales in lower lobes wh…

Sodium, the most important extracellular fluid electrolyte, is the focus of several homeostatic mechanisms that regulate fluid and electrolyte balance. Hyponatremia is a common electrolyte abnormality caused by an actual sodium deficiency or extracellular compartment fluid excess. Clinical symptoms are related with acuity and speed with which this abnormality is established. The symptoms are mainly neurological and neuromuscular disorders (headache, confusion, stupor, seizures, coma) due to brain cells edema. Hyponatremia due to sodium deficiency is caused by sodium loss from kidney (nephritis…

Multifocal cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) has a high mortality rate especially when patients present with stupor or coma. Medical treatment including anticoagulation raises concerns about the associated high risk of intracerebral hemorrhage. Treatment of multifocal CVST with mechanical thrombectomy devices and local tPA infusion have previously been reported. However, these devices may have technical limitations. Success of the new-generation aspiration thrombectomy device like the Penumbra system has been reported in few cases of isolated CVST without the use of chemical thrombolysis…

BACKGROUND: Stupor, coma, and other alterations of consciousness are among the most serious life-threatening emergencies faced by the emergency department physician. When a patient arrives with altered mentation from Central or South America, the usual causes that occur in the United States must be considered; however, other unusual tropical disease must be excluded, such as Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE).
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to review the clinical features of VEE.
CASE: A 17-year-old female traveled to Belize and developed vomiting, diarrhea, fever, headaches, and myalgias. Ov…

Central nervous system (CNS) involvement is uncommon in brucellosis. Neurological complications of brucellosis may be divided into 2 major groups: 1) those related to the acute-febrile state that occurs in acute disease (toxic-febrile neurobrucellosis), and 2) those related to actual invasion and localization of the pathogen in the CNS (classical neurobrucellosis). In this paper, we present 4 cases of toxic-febrile neurobrucellosis and discuss clinical findings and outcome of treatment in these cases. All patients had fever, headache, stupor or coma with neuropsychiatric symptoms such as hallu…

CASE DESCRIPTION: 4 racehorses were examined because of markedly abnormal behavior following administration of fluphenazine decanoate.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Clinical signs included restlessness, agitation, profuse sweating, hypermetria, aimless circling, intense pawing and striking with the thoracic limbs, and rhythmic swinging of the head and neck alternating with episodes of severe stupor. Fluphenazine was detected in serum or plasma from all 4 horses. The dose of fluphenazine decanoate administered to 3 of the 4 horses was within the range (25 to 50 mg) routinely administered to adult humans.…

Portal-systemic encephalopathy (PSE) is characterized by a neuropsychiatric disorder progressing through personality changes, to stupor and coma. Previous studies have revealed alterations of serotonin and of its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in brain tissue and CSF in experimental (rat) and human PSE. Increased brain 5-HIAA concentrations could result from its decreased removal rather than to increased serotonin metabolism. In order to evaluate this possibility, CSF 5-HIAA concentrations were measured using an indwelling cisterna magna catheter technique at various times foll…

The behavioral effects of the opioid receptor alkylating agent beta-funaltrexamine (beta-FNA) were assessed in normal (drug-naive) and morphine-dependent rhesus monkeys. In normal monkeys, beta-FNA (10 mg/kg s.c.) produced muscle relaxation and stupor, which could be reversed by the opioid antagonist Win 44,441. Given as a 48-hr pretreatment, beta-FNA antagonized the behavioral effects of acute morphine, but not those of two kappa agonists, ethylketazocine and Mr 2033 (UM 1072). In morphine-dependent monkeys, beta-FNA (10 mg/kg, s.c. and 0.003 mg i.c.v.) precipitated severe abstinence which la…
