The attention network of the human brain: relating structural damage associated with spatial neglect to functional imaging correlates of spatial attention.

Functional imaging studies of spatial attention regularly report activation of the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and dorsal premotor cortex including the frontal eye fields (FEF) in tasks requiring overt or covert shifting of attention. In contrast, lesion-overlap studies of patients with spatial neglect - a syndrome characterized by severe impairments of spatial attention - show that the critical damage concerns more ventral regions, comprising the inferior parietal lobule, the temporal-parietal junction (TPJ), and the superior temporal gyrus. We performed voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping of 2

Metacontrol-related aperiodic and periodic neural activity in cognitive aging: enhancing the neural signal-to-noise ratio through anodal transcranial direct current stimulation.

Metacontrol, the ability to adapt cognitive control to task demands, declines with age and is thought to be reflected in aperiodic and periodic neural dynamics. Given that anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (atDCS) can modulate cortical excitability via membrane potential shifts, we tested whether atDCS alters the neurophysiological signatures of metacontrol in younger and older adults. In a mixed design, younger and older participants performed a Go/Nogo task under both atDCS and sham stimulation conditions; resting-state EEG data were also acquired. Aperiodic activity was analyze

Gradient magnitude-based texture feature of the entorhinal cortex as a biomarker for Alzheimer's disease.

Volumetric analysis of brain structures is widely used to detect pathological changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but it has limited sensitivity to subtle tissue alterations. This study proposes a gradient magnitude-based feature derived from the normalized gradient magnitude (nGM) of the entorhinal cortex (EC) as a potential biomarker for AD detection. A total of 1,422 T1-weighted MRI scans from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative were used. nGM features were extracted from the EC using Sobel filtering and beta distribution fitting. Two classification tasks were conducted to dist

Dissociable roles of lateral orbitofrontal and medial prefrontal cortex in risk-based decision-making under equal expected value in rats.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a critical role in decision-making under uncertainty. Although prior studies have shown that PFC subregions influence risky choice in tasks manipulating reward probability, their contributions to decision-making across different levels of risk, independent of expected value, remain unclear. In the present study, we examined the effects of excitotoxic lesions of the lateral orbitofrontal cortex (lOFC) and the medial PFC (mPFC) on a novel T-maze risk choice task in male rats. In this task, expected value was held constant across choice options, while outcome var

Maximizing Efficiency: A Quality Improvement Project to Improve Inpatient Flow to the Operating Room.

INTRODUCTION: Half a million pediatric inpatients undergo surgery each year. At a large, tertiary-care academic pediatric hospital, the time required to transition inpatients from the acute care units to the preoperative zones was lengthy and unreliable, resulting in costly operating room (OR) delays. METHODS: In 2024, the perioperative microsystem quality improvement team aimed to improve preoperative efficiency by 10% for nonintensive care unit inpatients undergoing nonemergent surgery in the main hospital ORs. The primary outcome measure was the time from the OR's phone call for the inpati

Exposure to field-realistic levels of flupyradifurone and thiamethoxam reduces nursing behavior and accelerates foraging onset in Apis mellifera.

Honey bees are essential pollinators in agricultural and natural ecosystems. As a eusocial insect, the honey bee colony is composed of individuals performing different tasks according to their age-dependent caste, with younger nurses caring for the brood and older foragers collecting food outside the hive. Recently, insecticide-induced disruptions in this division of labor have been implicated as factors contributing to colony collapse, but the behavioral and physiological effects of insecticides on nurses remain poorly understood. We investigated the effects of two nicotinic acetylcholine rec

Predictions and goals modulate use of partner's gaze during joint action with humanoid robots.

During joint actions, partners coordinate attention and actions by using each other's gaze to predict upcoming actions and align with shared goals. Although gaze orienting has been extensively studied using screen-based paradigms, it remains unclear whether partner reliability and action goals calibrate the use of the partner's gaze during embodied interactions. We addressed this using a humanoid robot as a co-actor in two experiments. In Experiment 1, participants performed a color-sorting task while the robot provided informative or noninformative gaze cues. Cue reliability was manipulated b

Quantitative whole-body MRI in FSHD: assessing systemic involvement and future directions.

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a progressive, highly variable disease marked by asymmetric and time-varying muscle degeneration. This review distills ten lessons learned from the evolution of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in FSHD, focusing primarily on quantitative whole-body MRI (WBMRI) using chemical-shift-based water-fat-separation imaging (Dixon) two-echo methods. A description of short tau inversion recovery (STIR) imaging results and brief discussion of other quantitative methods is included for additional biomarker context. Whereas early studies relied on qualitativ

Do Treatment Ingredients Targeting Working Alliance Improve Cognitive Rehabilitation Session Performance in Patients With Acquired Brain Injury?

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to experimentally evaluate the potential impact of clinician-driven therapy ingredients hypothesized to enhance working alliance (WA) and promote patient engagement during cognitive rehabilitation sessions. It was hypothesized that when the clinician introduced evidence-backed alliance enhancing ingredients, there would be a corresponding improvement in participants' (a) performance on attention drills paired with a metacognitive strategy, (b) learning the steps to use a phone application, and (c) adherence to a home exercise program. It was also hypothes

P300 Latency with Memory Performance: A Promising Biomarker for Preclinical Stages of Alzheimer's Disease.

Detecting and tracking the preclinical stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is now of particular interest due to the aging of the world's population. AD is the most common cause of dementia, affecting the daily lives of those afflicted. Approaches in development can accelerate the evaluation of the preclinical stages of AD and facilitate early treatment and the prevention of symptom progression. Shifts in P300 amplitude and latency, together with neuropsychological assessments, could serve as biomarkers in the early screening of declines in cognitive abilities. In this study, we investigated the

The relationship between sustained hamstring pain and reorganisation of somatosensory representations: a randomised, controlled study.

Recurrent hamstring injuries are highly prevalent amongst sporting populations. It has been hypothesised that pain from an initial hamstring injury may induce reorganisation of somatosensory representations that could contribute to reinjury. However, because of the cross-sectional nature of existing research, it remains unknown whether somatosensory changes are a cause or effect of pain or if they are driven by other potentially confounding factors. Here, we explored the effect of experimentally induced sustained hamstring pain on tasks that interrogate somatosensory and spatial representation

Effects of cholinesterase inhibition on attention and working memory in Lewy body dementias.

Cholinesterase inhibitors are frequently used to treat cognitive symptoms in Lewy body dementias (Parkinson's disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies). However, the selectivity of their effects remains unclear. In a novel rivastigmine withdrawal design, Parkinson's disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies patients were tested twice: once when taking rivastigmine as usual and once when they had missed one dose. In each session, they performed a suite of tasks (sustained attention, simple short-term recall, distractor resistance and manipulating the focus of attention) that allowed

Rumination in bipolar disorder associated with brain network and behavioural measures of inhibitory executive control.

OBJECTIVE: Rumination is a passive form of negative self-focused cognition that predicts depressive episodes for individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). Individuals with BD also have impaired inhibitory executive control; rumination in BD may therefore reflect executive dysfunction. We investigated the relationship between a neural measure of executive functioning (functional connectivity between the frontoparietal control network [FPCN] and the default mode network [DMN] during an effortful task), behavioural measures of executive functioning (the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functi

Short-term monocular deprivation reduces inter-ocular suppression of the deprived eye.

The adult visual system was traditionally thought to be relatively hard-wired, but recent studies have challenged this view by demonstrating plasticity following short-term monocular deprivation. Depriving one eye of spatial information for 2-3 h increased subsequent sensory dominance of that eye. However, the mechanism underlying this phenomenon is unclear. The present study sought to address this issue and determine the consequences of short-term monocular deprivation on inter-ocular suppression of each eye. Sensory eye dominance was examined before and after depriving an eye of all input us

Decreased anterior cingulate activation in a motor task in youths with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BP) is characterized by abnormal shifts in mood between episodes of mania and severe depression, both of which have been linked with psychomotor disturbances. This study compares brain activation patterns in motor networks between euthymic youths with BP and healthy controls (HC) during the completion of a simple motor task. METHODS: Thirty-five youths with BP and 35 HC (aged 10-19) completed a self-paced sequential bilateral finger-tapping task, consisting of a 4-minute scan block with alternating 20-second periods of either the tapping task (six blocks) or rest

Effects of the NMDA receptor antagonists dizocilpine and Ro 63-1908 on delay-discounting and risky decision-making in a gambling task.

Previous studies demonstrated that NMDA receptor antagonists such as dizocilpine (MK801) and the GluN2B NMDA antagonist Ro 63-1908 promote impulsive action (motor impulsivity). The effects of these treatments on impulsive choice and decision-making is less well characterized. Two experiments were undertaken. In the first experiment, given evidence for delay order as a factor in choice selection, the effect of dizocilpine was examined in a delay discounting task with separate groups of male Long-Evans rats trained to a schedule of either ascending (i.e. 0-40 s), or descending delays (i.e. 40-0

Being on Target: Visual Information during Writing Affects Effective Connectivity in Parkinson's Disease.

A common motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) is micrographia, characterized by a decrease in writing amplitude. Despite the relevance of this impairment for activities of daily living, the underlying neural network abnormalities and the impact of cueing strategies on brain connectivity are unknown. Therefore, we investigated the effects of visual cues on visuomotor network interactions during handwriting in PD and healthy controls (HCs). Twenty-eight patients with early disease, ON dopaminergic medication, and 14 age-matched controls performed a pre-writing task with and without visual c

Does the latissimus dorsi tendon transfer for massive rotator cuff tears remain active postoperatively and restore active external rotation?

HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the muscle activity with surface electromyography (EMG) and the clinical outcome of the latissimus dorsi transfer. It remains unclear whether the clinical results of the latissimus dorsi transfer for massive posterosuperior rotator cuff tears are achieved either by active muscle contractions or by a passive tenodesis effect of the transfer. METHODS: Eight patients were evaluated preoperatively and at 1 year (SD, 0.1) after the latissimus dorsi transfer. Clinical evaluation of outcomes included active range of motion, Constant score, and vis

ERP generator anomalies in presymptomatic carriers of the Alzheimer's disease E280A PS-1 mutation.

Although subtle anatomical anomalies long precede the onset of clinical symptoms in Alzheimer's disease, their impact on the reorganization of brain networks underlying cognitive functions has not been fully explored. A unique window into this reorganization is provided by presymptomatic cases of familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD). Here we studied neural circuitry related to semantic processing in presymptomatic FAD cases by estimating the intracranial sources of the N400 event-related potential (ERP). ERPs were obtained during a semantic-matching task from 24 presymptomatic carriers and 25 sy

Visual field asymmetries in attention vary with self-reported attention deficits.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether an index of self-reported attention deficits predicts the pattern of visual field asymmetries observed in behavioral measures of attention. Studies of "normal" subjects do not present a consistent pattern of asymmetry in attention functions, with some studies showing better left visual field (LVF) performance, others showing no asymmetry or even a right visual field (RVF) advantage. Here we found that a participant variable (a measure of self-reported attention problems) may help to explain these inconsistencies. We used Conners' Adult ADHD Ra
