[Cypress: a new plague for the Rhône-Alpes region?].

Today the Cupressaceae are seen as one of the most allergenic plant families in the mediterranean region. A comparative study of Cupressaceae pollen concentration as sampled in Lyon-Bron (temperate region) and in Montpellier (mediterranean region) has been conducted. During the last 20 years, this family of plant has increasingly been represented in the pollinic spectra. In Montpellier the annual mean pollen concentration went from 43 pollen grains m3 of air at the beginning of the eighties to 72 pollen grains at the beginning of the years 2000. In Lyon, the progression is above 200% but with

[Problems posed by the spread of Aedes albopictus].

Ae. albopictus is originated from Asia, and is known as a natural vector of dengue in South-East Asia. Since about 10 years, Ae. albopictus has spread all around the world. It was introduced into the Americas: United States, Mexico, Brazil, Barbados and the dominican Republic; into some Pacific islands as Solomons, Fidji and Australia; into Africa in Nigeria; and finally into Europe: in Italy and Albany. These introductions were made primarily through imported tyres containing eggs and/or larvae of Ae. albopictus. The tyre international trade plays a significant role in the expansion of Ae. al

Fulminant streptococcal myositis.

A previously healthy 70-year-old woman was hospitalized for acute pain and edema of her right leg. Deep vein thrombosis was suspected, and she was put on anticoagulant therapy. Ten hours later, she developed a massive swelling of the leg with a well-demarcated violaceous discoloration of the skin and hemorrhagic bullae. She was in deep shock with signs of disseminated intravascular coagulation and adult respiratory distress syndrome. Gram stain of an aspirate from the bullae revealed short chains of Gram-positive cocci, and multiple blood cultures showed abundant growth of Streptococcus pyogen

Prosthesis for blepharospasm.

Following several years of experience with a newly designed spectacle-supported ptosis crutch for ptosis and blepharospasm, the author has developed a new approach to these conditions. In mild to moderate blepharospasm cases, the spectacle-supported prosthesis can still produce satisfactory results. However, in moderate to severe blepharospasm, the force of the spasm moves the entire device forward and downward, making it ineffective or too uncomfortable to wear. To create greater stability and a more effective counterforce to the blepharospasm, the author has developed a simple headband-suppo

[Comparative study of the immunoglobulin content in persons from leptospirosis foci in different geographical zones of the RSFSR].

The authors carried out a comparative study of the content of serum immunoglobulins in persons from the leptospirosis foci of various geographical zones of the RSFSR: European part--the Centre (Moscow and Ryazan regions), the South (Checheno-Ingush ASSR and Krasnodar Territory), and Western Siberia (Altai territory), Leptospira of serological group Pomona, Grippotyphosa, and Hbedomadis served as the causative agents of the diseases. It appeared that the annual course of the climatic factors acted equally (inhibitory action) on the immuno-globulin metabolism in the residents of temperate and so

Diseases of travel, with particular reference to tropical diseases.

The large amount of disease acquired by travellers demonstrates that at present travel is not safe. Study of this disease, however, indicates that travel could be made safe by the application of relatively simple precautions. Groups of travellers particularly liable to develop illness include those on short-term business and holiday trips to the Tropics. Young persons undertaking low cost overland journeys are particularly at risk. Among the important protozoal diseases acquired by travellers are malaria, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis and amoebiasis and the recent recognition of Lassa fever r

Milk yield and grazing behavior are influenced by the amount of concentrate but not the pregrazing pasture height offered to late-lactation grazing dairy cows.

In temperate regions of the world, such as southeastern Australia, the majority of dairy farms are pasture-based, with supplementary concentrates fed to cows in the parlor during milking to varying degrees based on location, season, and stage of lactation. Therefore, there is considerable variation between farms in the amount of pasture and concentrate fed. This experiment aimed to investigate the milk production, DMI, and grazing behavior of dairy cows offered pasture at different pregrazing pasture heights coupled with different amounts of concentrate. Thirty-six Holstein-Friesian dairy cows

Molecular detection of relapsing fever Borrelia puertoricensis in migratory Mexican free-tailed bats.

UNLABELLED: Bats have been increasingly recognized to host relapsing fever borreliae as well as borreliae that form novel clades adjacent to the Lyme borreliosis group. However, the genetic diversity and zoonotic potential of bat-borne borreliae remain poorly understood, in part because most work to date has focused on bats in the tropics. Fewer bat-borne Borrelia surveys have been conducted in temperate zones, where many bats undertake seasonal migrations that may facilitate pathogen dispersal. We surveyed blood from nearly 400 Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) during their sea

Increased late preterm birth risk and altered uterine blood flow upon exposure to heat stress.

BACKGROUND: Climate change, in particular the exposure to heat, impacts on human health and can trigger diseases. Pregnant people are considered a vulnerable group given the physiological changes during pregnancy and the potentially long-lasting consequences for the offspring. Evidence published to date on higher risk of pregnancy complications upon heat stress exposure are from geographical areas with high ambient temperatures. Studies from geographic regions with temperate climates are sparse; however, these areas are critical since individuals may be less equipped to adapt to heat stress. T

Phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary patterns of the genus Psammolestes Bergroth, 1911 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae).

BACKGROUND: The evolutionary history of biodiversity in South America has been poorly studied in the seasonal dry tropical forest (SDTF). Species diversification in this ecosystem may have a twofold explanation. First, intermittent connections in the middle and late Pleistocene promoted species dispersal and/or genetic connectivity between lineages isolated in disjunct patches of forest. Second, allopatric speciation proceeded immediately after the formation and colonization of the SDTF in the Neogene. Here we studied the diversification of Psammolestes, a genus endemic of the SDTF and natural

Isolation and molecular characterization of Polychromophilus spp. (Haemosporida: Plasmodiidae) from the Asian long-fingered bat (Miniopterus fuliginosus) and Japanese large-footed bat (Myotis macrodactylus) in Japan.

Bats (order, Chiroptera) account for more than one-fifth of all mammalian species in the world and are infected by various intra-erythrocytic parasites of the family Plasmodiidae (Apicomplexa: Haemosporida), including Polychromophilus Dionisi, 1899. Recent advance in the molecular characterization of haemosporidian isolates has enabled their accurate identification, particularly in the last decade. Studies are actively conducted in tropical regions, Europe, and Australia; however, data on haemosporidian infection in bats in Asian temperate areas, including Japan, remain limited. In this study,

Multiscale physical background to an exceptional harmful algal bloom of Dinophysis acuta in a fjord system.

Dinophysis acuta produces diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxins and pectenotoxins (PTX). It blooms in thermally-stratified shelf waters in late summer in temperate to cold temperate latitudes. Despite its major contribution to shellfish harvesting bans, little effort has been devoted to study its population dynamics in Chilean Patagonia. In 2017-2018, mesoscale distribution of harmful algal species (75 monitoring stations) revealed the initiation (late spring) and seasonal growth of a dense D. acuta population in the Aysén region, with maximal values at Puyuhuapi Fjord (PF). Vertical phy

Mercury and persistent organic pollutants in native and invading forage species of the Canadian Arctic: Consequences for food web dynamics.

Contaminant dynamics within Arctic marine food webs may be altered through the climate-driven northward invasions of temperate/boreal species. Here, we compare tissue concentrations of total mercury (THg) and legacy and emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in native versus invading forage species sampled from 2012 to 2014 near Arviat, Clyde River, and Resolute Bay, NU, representing, low, mid- and high eastern Canadian Arctic regions, respectively. Concentrations of THg, legacy Σ-polychlorinated biphenyls (ΣPCB) and Σ-organochlorine (ΣOC) pesticides were detected in all forage species,

The South-American distribution and southernmost record of Biomphalaria peregrina-a potential intermediate host of schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis remains a major parasitic disease, endemic in large parts of South America. Five neotropical species of Biomphalaria have been found to act as intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni in natural populations, while others have been shown to be susceptible in experimental infections, although not found infected in the field. Among these potential intermediate hosts, Biomphalaria peregrina represents the most widespread species in South America, with confirmed occurrence records from Venezuela to northern Patagonia. In this study, we report the southernmost record for the species

First Case of Actinomycetoma in France Due to a Novel Nocardia Species, Nocardia boironii sp. nov.

Bacterial mycetoma is a neglected disease mainly observed in tropical area countries and typically associated with rural conditions, making its presence in developed countries of temperate climate areas rare. However, we report the first case of an autochthonous mycetoma case in continental France that originated from a new Nocardia species. A Gram-positive filamentous bacterium (OFN 14.177T) was isolated from a pus sample from the mycetoma of a male French patient 92 years old suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The isolate was analyzed by a polyphasic taxonomic approach by coupling

Candidate biomarkers for mosquito age-grading identified by label-free quantitative analysis of protein expression in Aedes albopictus females.

UNLABELLED: We applied a "shotgun" approach based on nanoliquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry associated to label free quantification (LFQ) to identify proteins varying with age, independently from the physiological state, in Aedes albopictus, a mosquito species which in the last decades invaded temperate regions in North America and Europe, creating concerns for associated high nuisance and risk of arbovirus transmission. The combined "shotgun" and LFQ approach was shown to be highly suitable to simultaneously compare several biological samples, as needed in a study aimed t

Descriptive findings from analysis of a large database of cattle worm egg count and larval culture results collected across Australia between 2002 and 2012.

Results from worm egg counts (WECs) of cattle from across Australia over an 11 year period have been analysed to provide contemporary data on WEC and worm genus distribution in Australian cattle. A sampling kit consisted of ten sample containers. Faecal samples were collected into each sampling kit from groups of cattle and WEC and larval cultures were conducted using standard procedures. A submission form was completed for each kit with data requested including date of sampling, property address, age, average estimated weight and production type of cattle, last drench used and date of drenchi

Tropical environments, human activities, and the transmission of infectious diseases.

Throughout recent history, the tropical regions of the world have been affected more severely by infectious diseases than the temperate world. Much of the success of infectious diseases in that region is due to both biological and environmental factors that encourage high levels of biodiversity in hosts, vectors, and pathogens, and social factors that compromise efforts to control diseases. Several of these factors are described. Discussion then shifts to specific types of host-pathogen relationships. The most important of these in the tropics is the relationship between humans, a pathogen, an

Diagnosis and management of alcoholic hepatitis.

Alcoholic hepatitis is a form of severe, cholestatic liver disease that results from consumption of large amount of alcohol during a sustained period of time in a subset of alcoholics. Symptoms could be mild and nonspecific to more severe. The diagnosis of alcoholic hepatitis can be made with a thorough history, physical examination, and review of laboratory results. Liver biopsy is confirmatory but generally not indicated for the diagnosis. Abstinence is the key form of therapeutic intervention. Despite variable results in clinical trials, corticosteroids and pentoxifylline seem to provide mo

Relationship of life-course drinking patterns to diabetes, heart problems, and hypertension among those 40 and older in the 2005 U.S. National Alcohol Survey.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to estimate relationships between life-course drinking patterns and the risks of self-reported diabetes, heart problems, and hypertension. METHOD: Respondents to the 2005 National Alcohol Survey, age 40 and older, reported ever having a doctor or health professional diagnose each of the health-problem outcomes. Retrospective earlier-life drinking patterns were characterized by lifetime abstention and the frequency of 5+ drinking days (i.e., days on which five or more drinks were consumed) in the respondent's teens, 20s, and 30s. Past-year drinking pattern
