The causal role of brain circuits in osteoarthritis pain.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of chronic pain worldwide, resulting in substantial disability and placing a substantial burden on patients and society. The hallmark symptom of OA is joint pain. Despite extensive research, new treatments for OA pain remain limited, partly owing to a lack of understanding of underlying pain mechanisms. For a long time, OA pain was seen as a reflection of nociceptive activity at the joint level, and the brain has been viewed as a passive recipient of such information. In this Review, we challenge these concepts and discuss how, over time, the activation o

Temporal judgments of actions following unilateral brain damage.

Sense of time is a complex construct, and its neural correlates remain to date in most part unknown. To complicate the frame, physical attributes of the stimulus, such as its intensity or movement, influence temporal perception. Although previous studies have shown that time perception can be compromised after a brain lesion, the evidence on the role of the left and right hemispheres are meager. In two experiments, the study explores the ability of temporal estimation of multi-second actions and non-biological movements in 33 patients suffering from unilateral brain lesion. Furthermore, the mo…

Mammographers' perception of women's breast cancer risk.

OBJECTIVE: To understand mammographers' perception of individual women's breast cancer risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiologists interpreting screening mammography examinations completed a mailed survey consisting of questions pertaining to demographic and clinical practice characteristics, as well as 2 vignettes describing different risk profiles of women. Respondents were asked to estimate the probability of a breast cancer diagnosis in the next 5 years for each vignette. Vignette responses were plotted against mean recall rates in actual clinical practice. RESULTS: The survey was returned

Analysis of skin deformation profiles during sinusoidal vibration of fingerpad.

Vibrotactile perception threshold measurement has been widely used to diagnose the severity of peripheral neuropathy associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome and sensory losses in stroke and diabetic patients. The vibration perception threshold is believed to be influenced by many factors, such as contact force and vibration frequency. The present study is intended to analyze, theoretically, the time-dependent deformation profile of skin surface, strain distributions within soft tissue, and response force of a fingertip when it is stimulated by a probe vibrating with a sinusoidal movement.

[Asymmetry of visual perceptive activity of faces and emotional facial expressions].

Eye movements were studied in 40 right-handed subjects during perception of symmetrical chimerical faces. These movements were recorded using an original system based on a differential optical method for the detection of corneal reflection and of the pupil made shiny. Under basal conditions, the first fixation was usually located in the left visual hemifield. The subjects spent more time gazing at the right hemiface (P less than 0.04). This visuo-spatial asymmetry in favour of the left hemispace was increased when the subject was requested to determine the emotional expressions of a new series

Intermodal attention affects the processing of the temporal alignment of audiovisual stimuli.

The temporal asynchrony between inputs to different sensory modalities has been shown to be a critical factor influencing the interaction between such inputs. We used scalp-recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate the effects of attention on the processing of audiovisual multisensory stimuli as the temporal asynchrony between the auditory and visual inputs varied across the audiovisual integration window (i.e., up to 125 ms). Randomized streams of unisensory auditory stimuli, unisensory visual stimuli, and audiovisual stimuli (consisting of the temporally proximal presentation o

Cochlear Implantation: A Treatment Approach of Hearing Loss in Superficial Siderosis.

BACKGROUND: Superficial siderosis (SS) is a chronic condition characterized by progressive hemosiderin accumulation in the central nervous system (CNS) due to chronic subarachnoid hemorrhage. Common clinical features include progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), cerebellar ataxia and myelopathy. The aim of the study was to analyze the clinical presentation, management, and outcomes of patients affected by SS with bilateral severe-to-profound hearing loss and treated with cochlear implantation (CI), with a particular focus on the course of hearing benefit. METHODS: A retrosp

Limited Consistency and Strength of Neural Oscillations During Sustained Visual Attention in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Neural oscillations support perception, attention, and higher-order decision making. Aberrations in the strength or consistency of these oscillations in response to stimuli may underlie impaired visual perception and attention in schizophrenia. Here, we examined the phase and power of alpha oscillations (8-12 Hz) as well as aspects of beta and theta frequency oscillations during a demanding visual sustained attention task. METHODS: Patients with schizophrenia (n = 74) and healthy control participants (n = 68) completed the degraded stimulus continuous performance task during elect

Oculomotor Deficits and Symptom Severity Are Associated With Poorer Dynamic Mobility in Chronic Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Oculomotor deficits, vestibular impairments, and persistent symptoms are common after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI); however, the relationship between visual-vestibular deficits, symptom severity, and dynamic mobility tasks is unclear. Twenty-three individuals (mean age 55.7 ± 9.3 years) with persistent symptoms after mTBI, who were between 3 months to 2 years post-injury were compared with 23 age and sex-matched controls. Oculomotor deficits [depth perception, near-point convergence, baseline visual acuity (BLVA), perception time], vestibular deficits (dynamic visual acuity in the pitc

Hunger and satiety perception in patients with severe anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVES: Appetite is a subjective essential sense. In patients with severe anorexia nervosa (AN), controversy remains whether this sensation is altered. The objectives were to clarify, in patients with severe AN: (1) Whether the appetite changes during partial weight restoration, (2) Whether potential changes in appetite are related to (i) diagnostic subtype of AN, (ii) psychopharmacological treatment, (iii) disease duration, (iv) duration of hospitalization, and (v) baseline body mass index (BMI). METHODS: The study consisted of 39 patients, with a mean age of 23.7 ± 8 and an admission me

[Conservative therapy of incontinence].

Conservative therapy of faecal incontinence includes normalisation of colonic function, restauration of damaged anal skin and exercising methods. The most successful of those seems to be Biofeedback with good short time results up to 92% patients without further complaints, the long time results still being up to 67%. Prognosis depends on neuropathy, age and ability of perception and compliance. Passive electrostimulation replaces the damaged nerve and therefore has to be done lifelong. Increasing anal resting pressure seems to be a possible result.

How I do it: Flexible 3-D endoscope for endoscopic submucosal dissection.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is technically challenging as a result of a lack of depth perception. The present article investigated the 3-D endoscope for carrying out ESD and translated the technique from bench to clinical use. In a preclinical porcine experiment, ESD using a 3-D endoscope was compared between an experienced and a novice endoscopist. All ESD were completed without perforation. Median operative time per surface area was significantly lower for the experienced endoscopist than for the novice (197.9 s/cm2 vs 434.7 s/cm2 ; P = 0.05). The second part was a prospective cli

Dexamphetamine increased speech and visual unimodal illusions in healthy participants without affecting temporal binding window.

OBJECTIVE: Stimuli received beyond a very short timeframe, known as temporal binding windows (TBWs), are perceived as separate events. In previous audio-visual multisensory integration (McGurk effect) studies, widening of TBWs has been observed in people with schizophrenia. The present study aimed to determine if dexamphetamine could increase TBWs in unimodal auditory and unimodal visual illusions that may have some validity as experimental models for auditory and visual hallucinations in psychotic disorders. METHODS: A double-blind, placebo-controlled, counter-balanced crossover design with

Spatial attention and interhemispheric visuomotor integration in the absence of the corpus callosum.

In the lateralized simple reaction time (SRT) task with unimanual responses (Poffenberger paradigm), reaction times (RTs) are faster with ipsilateral (uncrossed) than with contralateral (crossed) response hand-target hemifield combinations. The difference between crossed and uncrossed responses (CUD) has typically been interpreted to reflect callosal transfer time. Indeed, acallosal subjects and split-brain subjects have longer CUDs than control subjects. However, a few recent studies have demonstrated that, contrary to classical findings, the CUD is also affected by non-anatomical factors. He

Temporal processing in poor adult readers.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between two different temporal processing tasks and word identification performance in skilled, dyslexic and poor adult readers. In Experiment 1 spatial and temporal sequencing tasks were conducted. It was found that adult dyslexics were significantly less accurate than skilled readers across all conditions in the temporal sequencing task, and when higher numbers of stimuli were presented in the spatial task. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1 in the temporal sequencing task and also found that poor readers had significantly higher m

Differences in hand hygiene knowledge and perceptions among nursing students and registered nurses during and after the COVID-19 pandemic: A comparative cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene is a cornerstone of infection prevention and control and plays a critical role in preventing healthcare-associated infections. During the COVID-19 pandemic, hand hygiene awareness and adherence increased across healthcare systems, but evidence on whether these improvements were sustained as pandemic pressures subsided remains limited. Nursing students and registered nurses are key groups for understanding long-term behavioural changes, as their knowledge, perceptions, and workplace experiences influence patient safety practices. OBJECTIVE: To compare nursing students'

Association between personality characteristics and sleep quality among Chinese middle-aged and older adults: evidence from China family panel studies.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep quality will have adverse effects on physical and mental health, quality of life and other aspects of middle-aged and older adults. Sleep quality is affected by many factors. Whether the sleep quality measures of the participants had changed in the previous or subsequent time period is not easily taken into account. Moreover, there have been no studies on this topic in Chinese middle-aged and older adults. The objective of this study was to mitigate the bias of sleep quality assessment, and analyze the association between personality traits and sleep quality in Chinese m

Effects of tRNS on perception of static and dynamic displays of social-emotional communication.

Accurately decoding emotions from facial and vocal cues is essential to successful social interaction. The human mirror neuron system (hMNS) is thought to support this through sensorimotor simulation of observed emotional expressions. While prior studies linked hMNS activity-indexed by mu rhythm desynchronization (mu-ERD)-to emotional action perception, causal evidence with dynamic, multimodal social stimuli remains limited. We investigated whether transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) to the inferior frontal cortex (IFC), a key node of the hMNS, enhances perception of static and dynami
