Autotransplantation of a premolar: a long-term follow-up report of a clinical case.

INTRODUCTION: This report describes the clinical management of a case in which a maxillary central incisor was lost after a traumatic injury. METHODS: A mandibular premolar with incomplete root development was transplanted into the alveolar socket of the lost central incisor. RESULTS: The case evolved favorably for 12 years, remaining vital to pulp sensitivity tests and developing a favorable crown-root ratio even after it was orthodontically moved. CONCLUSIONS: Premolar autotransplantation should be considered an important and valid biological alternative in cases of premature tooth loss b

A novel mutation in the AMELX gene and multiple crown resorptions.

Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders with regard to genetic aetiology and clinical phenotype and affects tooth enamel with no other non-oral syndromic conditions. X-linked AI is caused by mutations in the amelogenin (AMELX) gene, the only AI candidate gene located on the X chromosome. To date, 15 mutations in the AMELX gene have been found to cause AI. We identified a proband with generalized hypoplastic enamel and unusual multiple crown resorption in premolars and molars. Pedigree analysis suggested an X-linked hereditary pattern. We performed mutational

Evaluation of the marginal fit of full contoured zirconia, lithium disilicate and metal crowns fabricated using CAD-CAM: An in vitro study.

INTRODUCTION: The marginal fit of any dental restoration is vital to its long-term success. Lack of adequate fit is potentially detrimental to both the tooth and the supporting periodontal tissues. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the marginal fit of monolithic zirconia, monolithic lithium disilicate and monolithic metal crowns and compare the three groups. METHODS: The study was conducted by fabricating ten samples for each group, total of 30 samples. A premolar stainless steel die was used to standardize the preparation. PVS putty material was used to make impressions of the model

The circadian clock in enamel development.

Circadian rhythms are self-sustaining oscillations within biological systems that play key roles in a diverse multitude of physiological processes. The circadian clock mechanisms in brain and peripheral tissues can oscillate independently or be synchronized/disrupted by external stimuli. Dental enamel is a type of mineralized tissue that forms the exterior surface of the tooth crown. Incremental Retzius lines are readily observable microstructures of mature tooth enamel that indicate the regulation of amelogenesis by circadian rhythms. Teeth enamel is formed by enamel-forming cells known as am…

The critical role of nuclear factor I-C in tooth development.

OBJECTIVES: Nuclear factor I-C (NFIC) plays a critical role in regulating epithelial-mesenchymal crosstalk during tooth development. However, it remains largely unknown about how NFIC functions in dentin and enamel formation. In the present review, we aim to summarize the most recent discoveries in the field and gain a better understanding of the roles NFIC performs during tooth formation. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Nfic-/- mice exhibit human dentin dysplasia type I (DDI)-like phenotypes signified by enlarged pulp chambers, the presence of short-root anomaly, and failure of odontoblast differentia

In vivo evaluation of the antibacterial efficacy of polyethyleneimine nanoparticle-modified glass ionomer cement versus conventional glass ionomer cement.

AIM: Cemented crowns are susceptible to microleakage over time. Incorporation of quaternized polyethyleneimine (QPEI) nanoparticles into glass ionomer cement (GIC) may enhance its antibacterial properties, potentially increasing crown longevity. Insoluble QPEI nanoparticles exhibit strong antibacterial activity against bacteria in vitro, especially in provisional and orthodontic cements. However, their efficacy under oral conditions remains uncertain. Given the limited evidence under oral conditions, the present study evaluated the antibacterial performance of QPEI-modified GIC in vivo . SETT

[Endodontic retreatment of a maxillary second molar with chronic apical periodontitis and separated instrument: A case report].

This case report describes the micro-endodontic retreatment and comprehensive management of a complex left maxillary second molar presenting with multiple complications. The patient, a 41-year-old female, presented with recurrent gingival swelling associated with the tooth for more than six months. The tooth had a history of root canal treatment, fiber post placement, and full crown restoration two years earlier. Cone-beam CT (CBCT) revealed a separated metallic instrument approximately 5 mm in length in the apical region of the mesiobuccal root, a fiber post in the palatal root, underfilled r

Value of an Intraoral Camera in Evaluating Restorations and Plaque in a Simulated Environment: Observational Experiences of Dentists in Pediatric Contexts to Establish a Proof of Concept.

Access to the posterior maxillary and mandibular teeth is a significant challenge while evaluating plaque, gingiva, teeth, restorations, and crown margins. It is tougher when there are also limitations of mouth opening, small mouths, or when patients are not cooperative. The evolution of small intraoral cameras appears to be a promising solution - intraoral cameras fit into the mouth and deliver live, high-resolution video feeds of the intraoral areas. There are not many well-designed studies that have tested the value addition of an intraoral camera in pediatric patient scenarios. The objecti

The Patterning Cascade Model and Human Mandibular Premolar Variation.

OBJECTIVES: The patterning cascade model (PCM) provides a predictive framework for examining crown variation and posits that tooth size and enamel knot spacing, along with surrounding inhibitory fields, strongly influence crown morphology. The aim of this study is to determine if mandibular premolar variation aligns with predictions derived from the PCM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using three-dimensional (3D) scans and two-dimensional (2D) images of dental casts representing a contemporary human sample (n = 63), we collected crown area, cusp area, and intercusp distance measurements, including 3D
