BACKGROUND: microRNAs (miRNAs) were recognized as a promising source of diagnostic biomarker. Herein, we aim to evaluate the performance of an ultrasensitive method for detecting serum miRNAs using single molecule arrays (Simoa).
METHODS: In this study, candidate miRNAs were trained and tested by RT-qPCR in a cohort of PTB patients. Besides that, ultrasensitive serum miRNA detection were developed using the Single Molecule Array (Simoa) platform. In this ultra-sensitive sandwich assay, two target-specific LNA-modified oligonucleotide probes can be simply designed to be complementary to the ha

Chest X-ray is an important diagnostic aid frequently used alongside microscopic smear of sputum for the confirmation of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). However, there is a dearth of literature investigating the clinical and radiological pattern of sputum positive pulmonary TB among adults in Bangladesh. The current study explored these patterns in presentation. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at outpatients in department of medicine of a tertiary care hospital. A total of 50 newly diagnosed adult cases of smear positive pulmonary TB attending at the Directly Observed Treatme

The early diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) in infants is challenging owing to the non-specific clinical manifestations in infancy, particularly preterm infants. Two cases in preterm infants are reported. Case 1, conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF), was born at 27 + 1 weeks gestational age weighing 880 g. He presented on Day 85 with intermittent fever. Following a course of systemic broadspectrum antibiotics, he deteriorated, developing acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). TB Xpert polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the sputum obtained by laryngeal aspiration confirmed Mycobacterium

The clinical outcome of sarcoidosis (SA) is very similar to tuberculosis (TB); however, they are treated differently and should not be confused. In search for their biomarkers, we have previously revealed changes in the phagocytic activity of monocytes in sarcoidosis and tuberculosis. On these monocytes we found a higher expression of receptors for the Fc fragment of immunoglobulin G (FcγR) in SA and TB patients vs. healthy controls. FcγRs are responsible for the binding of immune complexes (ICs) to initiate an (auto)immune response and for ICs clearance. Surprisingly, our SA patients had a hi

Subclinical pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is defined as "…a state of disease due to viable Mycobacterium tuberculosis that does not cause TB-related symptoms but does cause other abnormalities that can be detected using existing radiologic and mycobacteriologic assays." In high-income countries, subclinical PTB is usually diagnosed during active case finding, is acid-fast bacilli smear negative, and associated with minimal or no lung parenchymal abnormality on chest radiograph. In the absence of symptoms, the epidemiologic risk of TB and chest radiograph are critical to making the diagnosis. In

Rasmussen aneurysm refers specifically to a pseudoaneursysmal dilatation of a branch of the pulmonary artery adjacent or within a tuberculous cavity. The incidence of pulmonary vascular complication secondary to tuberculosis is very rare hence underdiagnosed by many clinicians. It can present with life threatening haemoptysis and CT angiography plays an important role in localizing the lesion and guiding treatment. On contrary the most common cause of massive haemoptysis is of bronchial artery origin. Early diagnosis and proper interventions are essential as it is associated with high mortalit

UNLABELLED: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a common infection in developing countries and is associated with low socioeconomic status. It is considered a serious infection due it its long-term sequelae. Post-TB lung disease decreases life expectancy and increases the risk of recurrent TB infection. It also significantly increases the risk of other bacterial and fungal infections. Aspergillosis develops in the cavitary lesions of TB, worsening them and resulting in a deteriorating clinical situation. Concomitant pulmonary TB (PTB) and invasive aspergillosis is uncommon, particularly in the abse

Impaired immune responses have been observed in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which increases susceptibility to tuberculosis infection. However, the effect of the tuberculosis infection on the immunological and metabolic features of T2DM is largely unknown. To investigate this question, age- and sex-matched patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), T2DM, or T2DM combined with PTB were recruited from the Infectious Disease Hospital of Heilongjiang Province between January and September 2020. Healthy subjects were used as controls. Cytokines and chemokines in fasting serum sam

A 37-year-old female with a medical history of recently diagnosed active pulmonary tuberculosis and a new intracranial lesion presented with altered mental status, nausea, and vomiting for two days. An initial physical examination revealed that the patient was euvolemic. Laboratory findings revealed a serum sodium concentration of 105 mEq/L. During her admission, she was initially managed with lactated ringer solution in the emergency department, followed by 3% normal saline in the intensive care unit, and, eventually, on oral sodium chloride and fluid restriction on discharge. Once she was st

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to investigate the contributing role of gene variation and transcription levels among the m6A methyltransferases METTL3, METTL14, and WTAP in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB).
METHODS: A case-control study including 461 PTB patients and 467 normal controls was designed for genotyping. Three SNPs in METTL3 (rs1061027, rs1139130, rs1061026), three SNPs in METTL14 (rs62328061, rs4834698, rs1064034), and two SNPs in WTAP (rs1853259, rs11752345) were genotyped via the SNPscan™ technique. METTL3, METTL14, and WTAP transcription levels were determined in 78 PT

BACKGROUND: Paragonimiasis presents with nonspecific symptoms and radiologic findings, allowing for the possibility of misdiagnosis. Diagnosis is generally delayed due to lack of suspicion and presentation similar to pulmonary tuberculosis.
METHODS: A prospective observational study was carried out on 20 subjects at Civil Service Hospital of Nepal from March 2015 to June 2019 who presented with eosinophilia and pulmonary symptoms, and were treated empirically with Anti-tubercular therapy for suspicion of pulmonary tuberculosis.
RESULTS: The median age of the patient was 34 years. Mean blood

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is a significant risk factor for fungal infection. The cavitary lesions post PTB serves as a good reservoir for fungal colonization and subsequent infection. Furthermore, the severe immunosuppression associated with HIV and TB co-infection is another predisposition. The inadequate capacity to investigate and manage fungal infection in PTB patients increases their morbidity and mortality. The study aimed to provide serological evidence of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) among PTB patients in Kenya. Towards this, we analysed 234 serum samples from p

Sarcoidosis and tuberculosis have many clinical and laboratory similarities, which allowed researchers to assume the presence of common pathogenetic mechanisms in the development of both diseases. Recently, much attention has been paid to investigate the autoimmune origins in these pathologies. The aim of this study is to find out the characteristics of the autoinflammatory immune response in sarcoidosis and tuberculosis. In patients with sarcoidosis (n = 93), tuberculosis (n = 28), and in healthy donors (n = 40), the serum anti-MCV concentration was measured by ELISA, and B cell subpopulation

BACKGROUND: The double burden of diabetes mellitus (DM) and tuberculosis (TB) has attracted increasing attention, because DM not only increases the risk of active TB but also affects treatment outcomes. Screening for TB among diabetic patients has been recommended, but requires real-world evidence by considering its cost-effectiveness, cost-utility ratio, and cost-benefit ratio.
METHODS: A screening program was conducted in Jiangyin City of Jiangsu Province, China. A total of 14 869 diabetic patients received regular physical examinations for three consecutive years and were followed for the

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is transmitted in bioaerosols containing Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Despite being central to ongoing TB transmission, no routine diagnostic assay exists to measure Mtb in bioaerosols. Furthermore, published studies of Mtb in bioaerosol samples have been limited to individuals with sputum-positive pulmonary TB. Notably, TB diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and sputum laboratory findings. This is despite the fact that approximately half of all patients commencing TB treatment are sputum-negative, resulting in a high proportion of presumptive treatments.
