Assessment of a Parent-Child Interaction Intervention for Language Development in Children.

IMPORTANCE: Parent-child interactions are critical for language development in early life. OBJECTIVE: To test whether a clinic-based intervention was associated with improved home language environment and language development. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A pre-post study of a multifaceted clinic-based intervention called Talk It Up was conducted for 61 English- or Spanish-speaking families with children aged 2 to 12 months. Enrollment took place at a single urban pediatric clinic from January to November 2017, with follow-up data collection through May 2018. Analyses took place from J

tDCS over the motor cortex improves lexical retrieval of action words in poststroke aphasia.

One-third of stroke survivors worldwide suffer from aphasia. Speech and language therapy (SLT) is considered effective in treating aphasia, but because of time constraints, improvements are often limited. Noninvasive brain stimulation is a promising adjuvant strategy to facilitate SLT. However, stroke might render "classical" language regions ineffective as stimulation sites. Recent work showed the effectiveness of motor cortex stimulation together with intensive naming therapy to improve outcomes in aphasia (Meinzer et al. 2016). Although that study highlights the involvement of the motor cor

Comparison of the effects of mobile technology AAC apps on programming visual scene displays.

Parents and professionals who work with individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) face tremendous time pressures, especially when programming vocabulary in AAC technologies. System design (from programming functions to layout options) necessitates a range of skills related to operational competence and can impose intensive training demands for communication partners. In fact, some AAC applications impose considerable learning demands, which can lead to increased time to complete the same programming tasks. A within-subject design was used to investigate the comparati…

Individual differences in orthographic priming relate to phonological decoding skill in adults.

We examined relationships between individual differences in orthographic priming and a battery of measures assessing orthographic processing ability, reading history, current reading ability, and verbal intelligence in university students. Pronounceable and unpronounceable nonword primes preceded word and nonword targets. Individual differences in nonword reading skill and other measures of reading and spelling ability were associated with the degree of orthographic priming. Individuals with less phonological decoding skill benefited more from anagram primes for word targets preceded by unpron

What lies beneath: a comparison of reading aloud in pure alexia and semantic dementia.

Exaggerated effects of word length upon reading-aloud performance define pure alexia, but have also been observed in semantic dementia. Some researchers have proposed a reading-specific account, whereby performance in these two disorders reflects the same cause: impaired orthographic processing. In contrast, according to the primary systems view of acquired reading disorders, pure alexia results from a basic visual processing deficit, whereas degraded semantic knowledge undermines reading performance in semantic dementia. To explore the source of reading deficits in these two disorders, we com

A descriptive study examining phonological awareness and literacy development in children with Down syndrome.

OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: This article describes the profiles of a cohort of 77 New Zealand children with Down syndrome (aged between 5 and 14 years) in areas of particular importance to reading development, namely phonological awareness, word level reading and letter knowledge. Assessment of reading accuracy and comprehension of connected text, as well as further phonological awareness knowledge, was measured in 25 of the more advanced readers in this cohort. RESULTS: The findings showed the expected development with increasing age for letter knowledge, phoneme level awareness and reading tasks.

Morphological awareness intervention with kindergartners and first- and second-grade students from low socioeconomic status homes: a feasibility study.

PURPOSE: The effect of a morphological awareness intervention on the morphological awareness and literacy skills of students from low socioeconomic status homes was investigated. METHOD: A 9-week intervention designed to increase awareness of affixes and the relations between base words and their inflected and derived forms was conducted with students in kindergarten (n = 19), 1st grade (n = 21), and 2nd grade (n = 21). Groups of 4-5 students were provided with instruction 4 times a week for 25 min a day. RESULTS: Results showed medium to very large clinically significant gains in morphologi

Performance of a tactile P300 speller for healthy people and severely disabled patients.

P300 based Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) for communication are well known since many years. Most of them use visual stimuli to elicit evoked potentials because it is easy to integrate a high number of different classes into the paradigm. Nevertheless, a BCI that depends on visual stimuli is sometimes not feasible due to the presence of visual impairment in patients with severe brain injuries. In this case, it could be possible to use auditory or somatosensory stimulation. In this publication a vibrotactile P300 based BCI is introduced. Two different approaches were tested: a first approach

Lexical access and literacy in children with word-finding difficulties.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In order to understand better the lexical access abilities in children with word-finding difficulties, the extent of serial naming speed difficulties in these children as well as the degree to which serial and discrete naming tasks are related to one another and to literacy abilities was investigated. This enabled some of the predictions made in the double-deficit hypothesis of Wolf and Bowers to be tested. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Eighteen children with word-finding difficulties completed naming and literacy tasks at 8;6 years and literacy tasks at 9;8 years. OUTCOMES & RESU

Residual differences in language processing in compensated dyslexics revealed in simple word reading tasks.

Using regional cerebral blood flow as an index of cerebral activity we studied dyslexic and control subjects during simple word reading tasks. The groups were pre-tested for reading skill and the dyslexic group had a lower reading performance but could read and comprehend standard texts. The aim was to elucidate differences in the cerebral activation pattern during reading. The tasks were simple enough that performance differences between the groups could be excluded. We found specific differences between the two groups that were dependent on the language task. When the visual route for langua

Examination of the neighborhood activation theory in normal and hearing-impaired listeners.

OBJECTIVE: Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of lexical information on word recognition among normal hearing listeners and individuals with sensorineural hearing loss. The lexical factors of interest were incorporated in the Neighborhood Activation Model (NAM). Central to this model is the concept that words are recognized relationally in the context of other phonemically similar words. NAM suggests that words in the mental lexicon are organized into similarity neighborhoods and the listener is required to select the target word from competing lexical items. Two structural char

Word length and vowel duration in apraxia of speech: the use of relative measures.

Previous research has established that the duration of stressed word stem vowels is shorter in polysyllabic words than in monosyllabic words for normal speakers and for speakers with aphasia and apraxia of speech (AOS). However, the results are inconsistent across studies with regard to the magnitude and pattern of the duration reduction for apraxic speakers. We hypothesized that this inconsistency may be explained based on different relative measures of duration reduction. A speech sample was obtained from 10 aphasic speakers with AOS, 10 aphasic speakers without AOS, and 10 normal controls.

Rapid naming deficits in children and adolescents with reading disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Seventy-one children in three groups (reading disabilities, ADHD without reading disabilities, and normal controls) were compared on their ability to rapidly name colors, letters, numbers, and objects (RAN Tasks) and alternating letters/numbers and letters/numbers/colors (RAS tasks). Children with reading disabilities were found to be slower on letter- and number-naming tasks and made more errors on all tasks than controls or children with ADHD. There was an age effect for the RAN/RAS tasks, with younger children with reading disabilities performing more poorly on all tasks, while the older ch

Semantic and phonological coding in poor and normal readers.

Three studies were conducted evaluating semantic and phonological coding deficits as alternative explanations of reading disability. In the first study, poor and normal readers in second and sixth grade were compared on various tests evaluating semantic development as well as on tests evaluating rapid naming and pseudoword decoding as independent measures of phonological coding ability. In a second study, the same subjects were given verbal memory and visual-verbal learning tasks using high and low meaning words as verbal stimuli and Chinese ideographs as visual stimuli. On the semantic tasks,

Phonological intervention techniques for syllable and word structure development.

This article has two purposes: to outline aspects of nonlinear phonological theory that refer to syllable, word, and phrase structure, and to provide some examples of phonological intervention techniques for development of these structures. A variety of restricted child productions of syllable, word, and phrase structures are described in nonlinear terms. Intervention targets are defined for each of the restrictions, and both general and specific interventions are suggested, the majority of which have been clinically evaluated. Clinicians are encouraged to try various alternatives to discover

Lexical and prosodic cues in the comprehension of relative certainty.

This study examined the development of children's comprehension of the use of intonation and belief verbs to mark the relative certainty with which a speaker makes a statement. Subjects were presented with a task in which they had to guess the location of an object hidden in one of two boxes over a series of trials. As clues to location, the children were presented with contrasting pairs of statements by two puppets. In the first experiment with 30 children at each of three, four, five and six years of age, statements in each pair differed either with respect to the belief term included - know

Communicating with the rheumatic patient.

To explore the meanings attached to words by patients and doctors, a multiple-choice questionnaire was given to 214 rheumatic patients, 110 non-rheumatic patients, 227 rheumatologists and 36 general practitioners. Words and phrases dealt with symptoms in descriptive terms, common disorders and parts of the body relevant to rheumatology. Poor agreement was obtained for 'back' among rheumatologists and hospital doctors, and for 'arthritis' among general practitioners. The word 'sciatica' means very different things to different doctors. Among rheumatic sufferers good agreement was only reached f
