The Xijiang River is the major tributary of the Pearl River, South China, and is the major source water system for more than 4.5 million of urban population and 28.7 million of rural population. We initiated a systematic study on detection and quantification of organic pollutants in both water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) for samples collected in a span of 12 months. Partition coefficients for varied compounds were determined for the organic solvent-formamide biphasic partition system where the organic solvent is 1,2-dichloroethane, 1-octanol or isopentyl ether. These partition coefficient databases are analyzed using the solvation parameter model facilitating a quantitative comparison of the formamide-based partition systems with other totally organic and water-based partition systems. A method was developed for determining free fatty acids in edible plant oils by incorporation of running-buffer-mediated liquid-liquid extraction and polyamidoamine-dendrimer-assisted capillary electrophoresis-capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection. Lipase catalyzed transesterification was investigated to study the synergistic effect of microwave irradiation and enzyme catalysis. Transesterification of ethyl-3-phenylpropanoate with n-butanol was chosen as the model reaction using immobilized enzymes such as Novozyme 435, Lipozyme RMIM and Lipozyme TL IM with microwave irradiation. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability to morphine and morphine-6-glucuronide (M6G) is measured under identical conditions using an intravenous injection method in the rat and HPLC separation of morphine from its metabolites.
