BACKGROUND: The clinically significant antibody anti-A,B together with anti-A and anti-B has been known for many decades to be present in blood group O plasma. As anti-A,B is only reactive when an A or B antigen is present, its contribution to titer cannot be easily distinguished from anti-A and/or anti-B.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Chemically synthesized AB epitope (ABep) was attached onto red cells creating ABep-kodecytes; methodology was optimized and then used together with group A- and B-kodecytes to semi-quantitative undiluted plasma samples of all ABO blood groups for anti-A, anti-B, an

BACKGROUND: In ABO blood grouping, a type II discrepancy refers to weak or absent antigen reactions in cell grouping, often indicating a weak ABO subgroup. The Am phenotype is a rare weak A subgroup variant, distinguished by absent agglutination with anti-A antisera and normal A substance in saliva. Reporting such rare phenotype is vital to improve awareness and diagnostic accuracy, especially in Northeast region of India, where access to advanced serological tools is limited.
CASE DETAILS: During routine blood grouping, type II ABO discrepancies were noted in two cases. Comprehensive immunoh

BACKGROUND: Flow cytometry (FC) has proven its utility in scrutinizing AB antigen expression in red blood cells (RBCs), cooperating with serological tests for accurate blood group typing. However, technical difficulties may impair the characterization of weak ABO subtypes when background noises appear at non-negligible levels.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We sought to establish an FC method that could prevent antibody-induced hemagglutination and an increase in cellular autofluorescence, two major issues inherent to RBC-FC analysis of AB expression. We optimized fixatives, multicolor-staining pr

Anti-M is a frequently detected naturally occurring antibody that has been reported in various clinical settings and also in voluntary donors. We describe here the clinical and laboratory findings of 11 cases with anti-M detected at our center. This report is a retrospective study in which we reviewed our immunohematology laboratory records for cases involving anti-M. Both donor and patient data from a 28-month period (September 2014 to December 2016) were reviewed. During this period, 11 examples of anti-M were detected (8 patients, 1 voluntary whole blood donor, and 1 hematopoietic stem cell

The ABO blood group system is the most clinically significant system in transfusion medicine. Although serologic typing for ABO antigens is routine and reliable, molecular methods can be used to predict an ABO type in the absence of a blood specimen as well as to investigate ABO typing discrepancies often caused by ABO subgroups that cause weakened antigen expression, weak or missing serum reactivity, and/or extra red blood cell reactivity. By detecting single nucleotide variants that are hallmarks of the major ABO alleles, low-resolution genotyping methods can be used to make allele assignmen

Schistosomiasis or bilharzia is a widespread parasitic disease caused by blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma. Some factors have been investigated previously regarding their effect on the pathophysiological mechanism of human schistosomiasis, but the possible influence of the ABO blood group on the severity of Schistosoma infection has been the most promising. Hence, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to further investigate the association of the ABO blood group with schistosomiasis susceptibility. Selected publications were retrieved from PubMed up to 21 August 2018, for rela

The clinical course and the treatment of a case of severe haemolytic ABO-incompatibility are described. In addition to the routine therapy 3 times 2000 units of haptoglobinconcentrate were given since it is known according to the literature to metabolize free haemoglobin. The clinical result seems to confirm the beneficial effect. The course remained free of complications and the hospital stay was not prolonged. Further clinical experience is needed to confirm the effectiveness of the treatment with haptoglobin in cases with severe haemolysis.

INTRODUCTION: Transfusion management of patients who are alloimmunized against high-prevalence erythrocyte antigens is often problematic. Strategy management depends, not only on the specific clinical circumstances of the patient, but also on the acceptable time frame. In patients without clinically significant antibody incompatible transfusion it may be less harmful than delaying medical intervention.
CASE OUTLINE: We report a 57-year-old female from Libya, blood group O, RhD-positive, who was treated at the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases of Vojvodina. At the Blood Transfusion Institut

Unfortunately, transfusion errors continue to pose a major clinical problem. In practice there is a remarkable lack of understanding of the reasons behind transfusion medicine, a worrying disregard for protocol and an offhand attitude to bedside checking. Clearly transfusion medicine education, as often said, must be more extensively incorporated into the core curriculum of medical, nursing and laboratory staff. In this immunological case report, following accurate pre-transfusion procedures and routine laboratory testing, we highlight, once more, that it would be better for the patient to rel

The Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) scheme has now accumulated 8 years' data. The most frequently occurring adverse event, accounting for 1832/2628 (70%) of incidents reported, is 'incorrect blood component transfused' (IBCT) in which the patient receives a blood component that did not meet the correct specification or that was intended for another patient. Errors can occur at all stages of the transfusion chain and, in about half of cases, multiple system failures can be identified. Analysis of 130 ABO incompatible transfusions reported between 1999 and 2003 identified 221 separate erro

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The importance of ABO blood group system compatibility in platelet transfusion is a subject of ongoing debate. Although there are theoretical advantages to pursuing a strict policy of providing exclusively ABO-compatible products, resource challenges may make this untenable for many transfusion services. Moreover, data supporting a net clinical benefit for this practice have been lacking. This review summarizes recent developments in the area of ABO compatibility and platelet transfusion and examines the risks and benefits associated with transfusion practices allowing for p

Although the ABO blood group is the most significant in blood group system in human, other subgroups system is also important to be concerned in blood banking laboratory. ABO subgroups have weak antigen potency on red blood cell. In some cases, they could not been detected by cell grouping and serum grouping methods. This may lead to misinterpretation of ABO typing which will cause serious problems for transfusion and transplantation. Gold nanoparticle solution can increase the agglutination reaction of ABO typing. Thus far, the investigation of ABO blood group system has been performed using

Chimerism is a phenomenon in which an individual has cells with different genetic content from different zygotes. In dizygotic twins (DTs), chimerism is believed to occur through placental anastomoses that enable the bidirectional exchange of hematopoietic stem cells. Little is still known about chimerism frequency in twins, but several studies have shown a relation between chimerism and some conditions such as autism, Alzheimer's disease, and a group of autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and systemic sclerosis. In addition to chimerism of ABO blood gro
