OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of laparoscopy on the diagnosis and treatment of closed abdominal injury.
METHODS: A total of 26 patients with closed abdominal injury admitted to our hospital from January 2016 to January 2019 were searched. All patients were treated by laparoscopy. All patient reports were made with the informed consent of the patients.
RESULTS: All patients were diagnosed clearly during operation. Among them, there were 3 cases of gastric perforation, 2 cases of liver rupture, 13 cases of spleen rupture, 3 cases of small intestine rupture, 1 case of liver round ligamen

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
OBJECTIVE: To describe an intraoperative complication occurring from abdominal aortic penetration during a vertebroplasty procedure for vertebral fractures on Th12 and L1.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: A vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive and widely performed procedure in elderly and high-risk patients, although there is a risk of life-threatening complications including aortic injury. However, little is known about the treatment of iatrogenic aortic penetration occurring during a vertebroplasty.
METHODS: An 80-year-old female underwent a scheduled vertebroplast

BACKGROUND: Blast injury is uncommon, and remains poorly understood by most clinicians outside regions of active warfare. Primary blast injury (PBI) results from the interaction of the blast wave with the body, and typically affects gas-containing organs such as the ear, lungs and gastrointestinal tract. This review investigates the mechanisms and injuries sustained to the abdomen following blast exposure.
METHODS: MEDLINE was searched using the keywords 'primary blast injury', 'abdominal blast' and 'abdominal blast injury' to identify English language reports of abdominal PBI. Clinical repor

Peritoneal lavage is a sensitive method of detecting intra-abdominal injuries following closed abdominal injury. Our indications for peritoneal lavage are: severe head injury, severe thoracic injury, unexplained hypotension in a patient with possible blunt abdominal injury and patients on artificial ventilation. We present 40 patients with multiple injuries who underwent peritoneal lavage for suspected closed abdominal injury. Twenty-two lavages were positive and 19 laparotomies were performed, of which 18 revealed intra-abdominal injuries. Eighteen lavages were negative; no laparotomy was per…

Among other procedures of a complex intense therapy applied upon 265 abdominal trauma cases the authors have included an early peritoneal perfusion and longlasting peridural blockade. The results evidence a high prophylactic and therapeutic effectiveness of the suggested methods

Of 237 splenectomies performed over a six-year period, 39 were necessitated by intraoperative injury. Capsular and hilar tears were predominant. All injuries were recognized at the time they occurred. The incidence of pulmonary complications and wound infections exceeded those for other categories of splenectomy and for these other abdominal operations without splenectomy. Although these complications were not fatal and the mortality was not increased, measures for avoidance of intraoperative splenic injury are indicated. These include knowledge of anatomic relationships and exercising cautiou

The incidence of birth injuries has decreased considerably because of the identification of risk factors at an earlier stage and taking the decision for caesarian section (LSCS) at proper time. Fractures, nerve palsies and central nervous system injuries comprise the majority of "birth injuries." In this study, we report a newborn that had a birth injury during LSCS. The baby sustained a penetrating abdominal injury by the knife of the surgeon, while performing LSCS. The bowel was injured at two sites, proximal jejunum and descending colon. The baby developed meconeum spillage and peritonitis.

BACKGROUND: Blunt adrenal gland injuries are considered uncommon. Moreover, the factors associated with the mechanisms of the injury following blunt trauma are unclear. In this study, we determined the factors associated with blunt adrenal gland injury (BAGI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 315 patients with blunt abdominal trauma were admitted to our institution during a 12-year period. After excluding 26 patients who were under 18 years old and 27 patients who were in cardiopulmonary arrest on arrival, 262 eligible patients were retrospectively reviewed. Patient characteristics, mechanis

The strong association between penetrating colon injuries and intra-abdominal abscess (IAA) formation is well established and attributed to high colon bacterial counts. Since trauma patients are rarely fasting at injury, stomach and small bowel colony counts are also elevated. We hypothesized that there is a synergistic effect of increased IAA formation with concomitant stomach and/or colon injuries when compared to small bowel injuries alone. Consecutive patients at a level one trauma center with penetrating small bowel (SB), stomach (S), and/or colon (C) injuries from 1996 to 2012 were revie

Explosives create and energize particles that act as projectiles prone to further fragmentation or create other secondary missiles in the body. These fragments may result in secondary injuries. This has been repeatedly described in the orthopedic and neurosurgical literature. We report the same process for abdominal injuries after fascial penetration in the military setting. This is an observational case series study. Local wound exploration as a standard approach was performed in conscious patients who sustained abdominal wall injuries. Patients with negative physical examination were exclude…

OBJECTIVE- To describe the clinical characteristics, treatment, complications, and outcome of dogs and cats treated surgically for major abdominal evisceration. DESIGN- Retrospective case series. ANIMALS- 8 dogs and 4 cats. PROCEDURES- Medical records from January 1998 through March 2008 were reviewed to identify animals that underwent surgery for major abdominal evisceration. Data regarding cause of evisceration, signalment, physiologic variables, and hematologic variables were collected. Details of treatment, duration of hospitalization, and outcome were recorded. Linear regression analysis

Extrahepatic bile duct traumatic injuries are extremely rare and their treatment is difficult and with several controversies. The aim of this study was to offer some more clinical information on their surgical repair and outcome. We present seven patients with extrahepatic biliary tract lesions after blunt abdominal trauma, (isolated gallbladder lesions were excluded) four males and three females from 23 to 51 years of age (mean age 35.1 years). All patients had suffered high-energy blunt abdominal trauma and presented associated injuries, mostly liver trauma and lung contusions. Six gallbladd
