Acculturation, family cohesion, and mental health among Latinos living with HIV on the U.S.-Mexico border.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate whether acculturation to U.S. culture is associated with greater posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology through diminished family cohesion among Latinos living with HIV on the U.S.-Mexico border. METHOD: Baseline survey data were analyzed from a sample of Latinos seeking HIV care from a publicly funded HIV clinic in El Paso, Texas. We used a regression-based bootstrapping approach to test our mediation hypothesis. RESULTS: A total of 248 Latinos living with HIV completed the survey, with 96.4% being of Mexican descent, 19.…

Sleep behaviors of infants and young children: associated demographic and acculturation characteristics among Hispanic teen mothers.

Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed is a leading cause of preventable infant death. Bed sharing, teen motherhood, and Hispanic ethnicity have been associated with infant sleep suffocation death. Fifty-five Hispanic teen mothers were surveyed regarding acculturation/demographic characteristics and their infants' sleep behaviors. Most participants had 2 foreign-born parents from Latin America. Participants with 2 US-born parents were less likely to bed share than their less-acculturated peers. Many participants reported not always placing their infant in a supine sleep position. Ther…

Social anxiety among East Asians in North America: East Asian socialization or the challenge of acculturation?

North American research has consistently reported higher social anxiety among people of Asian heritage compared to people of Western heritage. The present study used a cross-national sample of 692 university students to explore explanatory hypotheses using planned contrasts of group differences in social anxiety and related variables. The East Asian socialization hypothesis proposed social anxiety would show a linear relation corresponding to the degree of exposure to East Asian cultural norms. This hypothesis was not supported. The cultural discrepancy hypothesis examined whether bicultural E

Acculturation-related variables, sexual initiation, and subsequent sexual behavior among Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Cuban youth.

The relationship among acculturation-related variables, past sexual activity, and subsequent sexual behavior was examined for a sample of Latino youth in the United States over a 12-month period. A subsample from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health database was analyzed by means of a prospective design. History of sexual intercourse predicted subsequent sexual behavior over the ensuing 12 months. The acculturation-related variables were related to whether an adolescent reported being sexually active at Wave 1 but in a complex fashion. Among recent immigrants, youth from Englis…

Academic belonging and adjustment self-efficacy among international students: The mediating role of acculturative stress.

This study examined whether acculturative stress mediates the relationship between academic belonging and adjustment self-efficacy among international students within inclusive higher education. Using a cross-sectional quantitative design, data were collected from 236 international students enrolled in tourism-related programmes at higher education institutions in Türkiye. Confirmatory factor analysis showed poor fit for both the three-factor acculturative-stress model (χ2/df = 5.74, RMSEA = 0.142) and the four-factor adjustment self-efficacy model (χ2/df = 7.96, RMSEA = 0.172). The mediation

Dispositional optimism, pessimism, and psychological distress among Venezuelan migrants in Chile: The role of acculturative stress.

INTRODUCTION: Migrants often experience mental health challenges associated with acculturative stress. Dispositional traits, such as optimism and pessimism, may shape how individuals appraise and cope with these challenges, influencing their psychological distress. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyse the role of three dimensions of acculturative stress: integration difficulties, nostalgia, and structural barriers, in the relationship between optimism, pessimism and mental health symptoms among Venezuelan migrants living in Chile. METHOD: A two-wave longitudinal study was conducted with 22

Reconstructing professional identity under acculturative stress: A longitudinal case study of a transnational language teacher.

As global teacher mobility increases, transnational educators often encounter acculturative stress and challenges to their professional identity. However, the psychological processes through which adaptation unfolds over time remain underexplored. Drawing on Ecological Systems Theory and the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, this study examines intercultural adaptation as a dynamic process shaped by changing environmental demands, cognitive appraisals, and coping responses. Using a longitudinal phenomenological case study design, the study followed an Asian English language teacher ove

Acculturation stress and mental health outcomes in a sample of migrant inpatients: Findings from a naturalistic study.

INTRODUCTION: Migrants face numerous risk factors for mental disorders, including stressors and traumatic events during the pre-, peri-, and post-migratory phases. Acculturation stress, a significant post-migratory stressor, can adversely affect mental health during the cultural adaptation process. This study aims to assess the clinical implications of acculturation stress in migrants admitted to a psychiatric intensive care unit, with a focus on identifying predictors of acculturative stress and their impact on clinical outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 268 immigrant p…

Hispanic ethnicity and acculturation, maternal age and the risk of gastroschisis in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study.

UNLABELLED: Studies indicate that gastroschisis is associated with maternal age, ethnicity, and acculturation. This analysis was conducted to further define the associations between gastroschisis and parental Hispanic ethnicity and acculturation, and to determine whether such associations vary by maternal age. METHODS: This study was based on data from mothers of 753 gastroschisis cases and 6,496 control infants in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study. The relationships between gastroschisis and both parental Hispanic ethnicity and acculturation, within maternal age strata (<20 versus …

The Association Between Acculturation and Parental Feeding Practices in Families With Overweight and Obese Hispanic/Latino Children.

This study examines the association between acculturation and parental feeding practices in low-income Latinos. Overweight/obese children (N = 117), aged 5 to 14 years, and their parents were recruited from a rural health clinic. Findings show that more acculturated parents have greater control over their child's eating behavior (P = .04). Parents who perceive their child as having a weight problem also have more control over their child's eating behavior (P = .02). Control measured from regulation of how much and when the child should eat to offering sweets and screen time for good behavior. …

Tobacco Use Assessment and Cessation Medication Orders Among Primary Care Patients by Ethnicity, Sex, and Acculturation Indicators.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic men and women in the United States. Smoking rates vary among Hispanic subgroups, with higher rates among those with indicators (e.g., language preference, nativity) of greater acculturation. It is recommended that clinicians ask about tobacco use and provide cessation treatment, as warranted. While studies in health care settings note disparities in tobacco-related care by ethnicity and acculturation proxies, we are unaware of studies that have evaluated these relationships among adult patients within community-based hea…

Acculturation as a Moderator of HIV Risk Behavior Correlates Among Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Acculturation is associated with increased sexual risk behaviors among heterosexual Latinos, but its influence among Latino gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) remains less clear. Elements of acculturation may create distinct lived experiences among sexual minority Latinos, moderating how beneficial and adverse influences contribute to their sexual risk behaviors. Latino MSM living in New York City (n = 412) were recruited using a modified time-space venue- and web-based sampling method. Negative binomial regression models estimated associations between indicators of accul…
