BACKGROUND: Achromobacter are non-fermenting-Gram-negative pathogens, mainly reported in cystic fibrosis (CF), but also responsible for opportunistic infections among immunocompromised patients or in case of healthcare-associated infections. Species identification techniques require specific methods not used in the routine diagnostic laboratories (nrdA-gene sequencing, MultiLocus Sequence Typing or matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry using in-house databases). As a result, epidemiological data are scarce, particularly outside the context of CF.

Achromobacter xylosoxidans is an emerging pathogen characterized by high levels of antibiotic resistance (AR) and increasing infection rates worldwide. This motile, opportunistic pathogen is widely distributed in the environment and can cause various infections, including pneumonia, bacteremia, endocarditis, meningitis, and others. In this study, we analyzed the population structure, AR profiles, and virulence factors of over 200 publicly available genomes. Core genome analysis revealed that A. xylosoxidans is highly adaptable, possessing a relatively small core genome. Antibiotic susceptibili

Totally implantable venous access devices (TIVADs) are frequently used in people with cystic fibrosis as a means of securing consistent vascular access, particularly in the context of severe disease and microbial colonization. Infection of TIVADs is not uncommon and typically associated with coagulase negative staphylococci, though infection with other organisms does occur too. We report on the first case of a TIVAD infection caused by Achromobacter xylosoxidans in person with cystic fibrosis. The TIVAD infection was complicated by a bacteraemia and an associated intracardiac infected thrombus

Peritonitis is considered to be the most common complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). It is usually caused by Gram positive Staphylococcus epidermidis. Achromobacter xylosoxidans (A. xylosoxidans) and Streptococcus suis (S. suis) are rare pathogens, but there is emerging evidence that they may be also responsible for PD related peritonitis. We described 2 cases of rare peritonitis treated in our center. In our opinion this is the first described case of PD related peritonitis caused by Streptococcus suis.

A 13-year-old female experienced a recurrence of baclofen pump-related central nervous system (CNS) infection caused by Achromobacter, despite absence of retained foreign material. Due to the failure of meropenem (120 mg/kg/d in divided doses every 8 hours and infused over 30 minutes) in the initial infection, the dose was infused over 4 hours during the recurrence. Meropenem is an antibiotic for which efficacy is time dependent, and 4-hour versus 30-minute infusions have been shown to prolong the time the concentration of the antibiotic exceeds the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of th

BACKGROUND: Achromobacter xylosoxidans is an opportunistic, gram-negative organism that primarily affects immunocompromised individuals or those with indwelling medical devices. Although generally considered of low virulence, it has been increasingly recognized as a cause of serious infections, including infective endocarditis (IE), which is associated with significant morbidity and mortality and often poses therapeutic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 69-year-old Middle Eastern woman with a complex medical history significant for coronary artery bypass grafting, end-st

The Achromobacter genus includes opportunistic pathogens that can cause chronic infections in immunocompromised patients, especially in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Treatment of Achromobacter infections is complicated by antimicrobial resistance. In this study, a collection of Achromobacter clinical isolates, from CF and non-CF sources, was investigated for polymyxin B (PmB) resistance. Additionally, the effect of PmB challenge in a subset of isolates was examined and the presence of PmB-resistant subpopulations within the isolates was described. Further, chemical and mass spectrometry an

RATIONALE: Hyponatremia occurs frequently in the hospital setting and may be attributable to a host of etiologies. Drugs are frequently implicated. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) represents a well-recognized pharmacologic precipitant of drug-induced hyponatremia, with several reports extant in the retrievable literature. Nephrologists thus debate the mechanisms giving rise to TMP/SMX-induced hyponatremia and the precise mechanism by which treatment with TMP/SMX generates reductions of serum sodium concentration remain controversial. The agent has a well-known effect of antagonizing th

Septic arthritis of the temporomandibular joint (SATMJ) is a rare complication of acute otitis media (AOM) with only four reported cases in the English and Japanese literature. Based on the unusual nature of this clinical condition, we discuss the first documented case due to Achromobacter xylosoxidans and the utility of myringotomy with long-term intravenous antibiotics via a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC). We describe the case of a 76-year-old male patient that was brought in by ambulance to the accident and emergency (A&E) department due to severe right-sided otalgia with inc

The clinical relevance of nosocomially acquired infections caused by multi-resistant Achromobacter strains is rapidly increasing. Here, a diverse set of 61 Achromobacter xylosoxidans strains was characterized by MultiLocus Sequence Typing and Phenotype MicroArray technology. The strains were further analyzed in regard to their susceptibility to 35 antibiotics and to 34 different and newly isolated bacteriophages from the environment. A large proportion of strains were resistant against numerous antibiotics such as cephalosporines, aminoglycosides and quinolones, whereas piperacillin-tazobactam

Achromobacter xylosoxidans harbors robust intrinsic and acquired resistance mechanisms and is responsible for severe nosocomial infections in high-risk individuals. Here, we investigated the effectiveness of β-lactam antibiotic combinations against three sequentially collected A. xylosoxidans isolates from a pediatric patient with chronic myeloid leukemia, which were previously genotyped and sequenced to assess and characterize the evolution of resistance. The time course killing activity from in vitro static concentration time-kill (SCTK) assays and genomics of these longitudinally collected

INTRODUCTION: Infectious diseases exert systemic effects beyond localized inflammation, yet selective disruption of host metabolic pathways remains incompletely characterized. Carnitine-dependent fatty-acid transport is essential for mitochondrial energy production, and acquired deficiencies are rarely attributed to infection. Chronic bacteremia has not been clearly linked to functional impairment of this pathway.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old man with no prior metabolic or neuromuscular disease presented with subacute proximal muscle weakness, fasting intolerance, and episodic confusion f

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to describe the clinical and demographic characteristics of children with cystic fibrosis (cwCF) diagnosed with a first Achromobacter (Ach) isolation, and to evaluate treatment outcomes at our CF center during the pre-modulator era.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed children followed at a single CF center (2014-2021) with at least four respiratory cultures per year and ≥12 months of follow-up after first Ach isolation. Eradication was defined as no Ach isolation for 12 months after the first detection; persistent infection was defined as intermittent or chr

Dugongs (Dugong dugon), classified as vulnerable marine mammals, are increasingly impacted by infectious diseases, yet the role of septicemia and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in their mortality remains uncharacterized. This study aimed to investigate the pathological and microbiological features associated with an acute mortality event in a juvenile dugong during rehabilitation in southern Thailand. Comprehensive histopathological and microbiological analyses were conducted on tissue samples collected postmortem. Bacterial isolation and identification were performed using stand

Achromobacter xylosoxidans is an aerobic, catalase-positive, non-pigment-forming, Gram-negative, and motile bacterium. It potentially causes a wide range of human infections in cystic fibrosis and non-cystic fibrosis patients. However, developing a safe preventive or therapeutic solution against A. xylosoxidans remains challenging. This study aimed to construct an epitope-based vaccine candidate using immunoinformatic techniques. A. xylosoxidans was isolated from an auto workshop in Lahore, and its identification was confirmed through 16S rRNA amplification and bioinformatic analysis. Two prot

How the opportunistic Gram-negative pathogens of the genus Achromobacter interact with the innate immune system is poorly understood. Using three Achromobacter clinical isolates from two species, we show that the type 3 secretion system (T3SS) is required to induce cell death in human macrophages by inflammasome-dependent pyroptosis. Macrophages deficient in the inflammasome sensors NLRC4 or NLRP3 undergo pyroptosis upon bacterial internalization, but those deficient in both NLRC4 and NLRP3 do not, suggesting either sensor mediates pyroptosis in a T3SS-dependent manner. Detailed analysis of th

Microplastics pretreatment of prior to biodegradation is an efficient approach for their bioremediation. We isolated Achromobacter denitrificans from compost and used it for biodegradation of thermo-oxidative pretreated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). About 12.3 % and 6.5 % weight loss, and 326.4 and 112.32 mg L-1 extracellular protein were observed in bacterial flasks with PVC and LDPE, respectively. The pH in treated PVC reached to 5.12 and the thermal stability increased by 29 °C. The chemical modification in LDPE was demonstrated through oxidation of antioxida

Inflammation during HIV infection is associated with worse disease outcomes and progression. Many mechanisms have been indicted, including HIV itself, coinfections, and gut microbial translocation. Concerning microbial translocation, we hypothesized that adaptive immune responses to a specific bacterial species known to be present in gut-associated lymphoid tissue are higher among HIV-infected individuals than among HIV-uninfected controls and are associated with T cell activation and lower CD4 T cell counts. By characterizing the IgG response to Achromobacter xylosoxidans, we found that HIV-i

Achromobacter is commonly associated with the production of glycolipid biosurfactants, which are sought after for diverse applications in biomedical and environmental fields. Given the increasing demand for biosurfactants, this study focuses on optimizing culture conditions, characterizing the biosurfactant product, and examining its potential application for enhanced motor oil removal from contaminated sand. The study was conducted using minimal salt medium (MSM), and the one-factor-at-a-time approach was used to vary incubation time, carbon source, nitrogen source, and carbon-nitrogen ratio
