Qualitative evaluation of the masseteric poststimulus EMG complex following mechanical or acoustic stimulation of osseointegrated oral implants.

To qualify the contribution of the periodontal-ligament receptors to trigeminal inhibitory reflex responses, 20 subjects with maxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses opposing mandibular teeth or implants were compared to 10 subjects with removable dentures in the maxilla opposing implant-supported prostheses and 10 subjects with natural teeth in both jaws. Standardized mechanical taps were delivered to an implant, a denture tooth, or a natural tooth in the central incisor region of the maxilla. Bilateral surface electromyographic recordings of the masseter muscles were obtained while subj

Effect of contralateral acoustic stimulation on active cochlear micromechanical properties in human subjects: dependence on stimulus variables.

1. Outer hair cells (OHCs) have active micromechanical properties that are thought to be the origin of evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs). In the present study, click-evoked otoacoustic emissions were recorded in humans with or without various contralateral acoustic stimulations. A previous study, concentrating on contralateral stimulation with broadband noise, had shown a decrease of the EOAE amplitude in humans. Results support a role for the efferent system in cochlear mechanics; indeed, medial efferent neurons of the olivocochlear bundle terminate on the OHCs. To obtain a better understa…

Effect of eye closure, mental concentration, and nonauditory sensory stimulation on the threshold and magnitude of the acoustic reflex.

Acoustic reflex threshold and magnitude were measured for normal-hearing subjects in four experiments under conditions of: (1) tight and relaxed eyelid closure; (2) eyes open and closed in light, focusing on a spot, reading, and solving a visual maze; (3) tactile stimulation; and (4) performing a mental task. Measurements were susceptance change in millimhos for a 220 Hz probe tone. A 1000 Hz pure-tone and broadband noise presented contralaterally were the stimuli. All factors affected reflex results. Eyelid closure enhanced reflex responses with tight closure involving voluntary muscle tensio

Transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation modulates M1-PPN spike-LFP coupling and improves motor dysfunction in parkinsonian rats.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation (TMAS) improves motor dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) model rats and whether its effects are associated with modulation of bidirectional spike-local field potential (LFP) coupling between the primary motor cortex (M1) and the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN). METHODS: Two primary cohorts (n = 24 each) comprised WT + Sham, PD + Sham, and PD + TMAS groups (n = 8/group). An independent supplementary healthy-control experiment included newly allocated WT + Sham and WT + TMAS groups (n = 8/group; 16 …

Modulating altered sensory prediction using bilateral auditory cortex high-definition transcranial random noise stimulation and acoustic masking.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the combined effect of high-definition transcranial random noise stimulation (HD-tRNS) of bilateral auditory cortex and acoustic stimulation (AS) on auditory evoked potentials and tinnitus perception. METHODS: A double-blind, randomized, controlled, within-subject crossover trial was conducted with thirteen adults with chronic tinnitus. Each participant completed four sessions, at least 48 h apart, consisting of active HD-tRNS + AS, active HD-tRNS alone, sham HD-tRNS + sham AS and sham HD-tRNS alone. Auditory evoked potentials (including mismatch negativity) and tinnitus …

Acoustic Analysis of Intonation in Persons With Parkinson's Disease Receiving Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and Intensive Voice Treatment.

Intonation is one of the prosodic features manifested acoustically in the fundamental frequency (f0). Intonation abnormality is common and prominent in the speech of persons with Parkinson's disease (PD). The current research investigated acoustically five intonational features including f0 declination, f0 resetting, sentence stress, terminal fall, and syntactic prejunctural fall in 20 PD participants, receiving Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT)-LOUD alone, or combined with transcranial magnetic stimulation delivered to the left or right primary laryngeal motor cortex. The results revealed

Improved interaural timing of acoustic nerve stimulation affects sound localization in single-sided deaf cochlear implant users.

The main impairment associated with single-sided deafness (SSD) is the loss of binaural hearing. Currently, the most effective treatment to compensate for this deficit is to supply patients suffering from SSD with a cochlear implant (CI) in the deaf ear. With this approach binaural hearing abilities can be restored to a certain extent, which is expressed in an improvement in such patients with regard to sound source localization and speech comprehension in noise after receipt of a CI. However, binaural performance of these listeners does not reach the level of normal-hearing listeners. One of

Detection of Osteoporotic Changes in Rat Femoral Bone Using the Acoustically Stimulated Electromagnetic (ASEM) Method.

Bone exhibits piezoelectricity originating from the alignment of collagen fibers, enabling detection of acoustically induced electric polarization through the acoustically stimulated electromagnetic (ASEM) method. In this technique, piezoelectric polarization is modulated at the radio frequency of ultrasound irradiation and captured by a resonant antenna precisely tuned to the frequency of the ultrasound waves. Goto-Kakizaki rats, a model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), were bred for 40 wk. Their femoral bones were harvested for micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging and mechanical eva

The Contributions of Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials and Acoustic Vestibular Stimulation to Our Understanding of the Vestibular System.

Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are short-latency muscle reflexes typically recorded from the neck or eye muscles with surface electrodes. They are used clinically to assess otolith function, but are also interesting as they can provide information about the vestibular system and its activation by sound and vibration. Since the introduction of VEMPs more than 25 years ago, VEMPs have inspired animal and human research on the effects of acoustic vestibular stimulation on the vestibular organs, their projections and the postural muscles involved in vestibular reflexes. Transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation ameliorates cortico-subthalamic circuit dysfunction in MPTP-induced Parkinsonian mice: a cross-scale characterization.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by abnormal oscillatory activity and altered interregional coupling within the cortico-subthalamic (M1-STN) circuit. Transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation (TMAS) combines focused ultrasound with a static magnetic field, but its modeled physical responses and circuit-level effects remain incompletely characterized. We integrated multiphysics simulations with behavioral testing, simultaneous M1-STN local field potential recordings, Golgi-Cox staining, and histological analyses in MPTP-induced parkinsonian mice. Simulations predicted an acoustic field…

Chronic Electro-Acoustic Stimulation May Interfere With Electric Threshold Recovery After Cochlear Implantation in the Aged Guinea Pig.

OBJECTIVES: Electro-acoustic stimulation (EAS) combines electric stimulation via a cochlear implant (CI) with residual low-frequency acoustic hearing, with benefits for music appreciation and speech perception in noise. However, many EAS CI users lose residual acoustic hearing, reducing this benefit. The main objectives of this study were to determine whether chronic EAS leads to more hearing loss compared with CI surgery alone in an aged guinea pig model, and to assess the relationship of any hearing loss to histology measures. Conversely, it is also important to understand factors impacting …

[Morpho-functional changes in mauthner neurons of goldfish adapted to prolonged orthodromic stimulation of acoustic nerve in vitro].

In newly-hatched goldfish the adapted state was developed using repeated short-term stimulation of the vestibular apparatus. It differed from the non-adapted state by the absence of fatigue during the turns of fishes produced by unilateral tail fin flicks in ring channel. Electrophysiological study of Mauthner neurons (MN) in adapted goldfish using the slices of medulla oblongata incubated in vitro, has shown the preservation of the amplitude of the extracellular responses after prolonged orthodromic electric stimulation of acoustic nerve, which suppressed the responses of non-adapted MN. Thus

Assessment of facial nerve function in acoustic tumor disease by nasal muscle F waves and transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Standard transcranial magnetic stimulation and nasal muscle F-wave recordings were used to assess proximal facial nerve function in 27 patients with unilateral acoustic tumors (mean diameter, 29 mm) and clinically intact facial nerve function. Latency measurements for F waves and cortical magnetic stimulation were abnormal. Moreover, F ratios, central motor conduction time, and the ratio of response latency to cortical and cisternal magnetic stimulation were significantly increased. Amplitudes were unchanged. Correlation analysis with tumor diameter as dependent variable yielded maximum r valu

Noninvasive deep brain stimulation using theta-burst transcranial magnetic-acoustic coupling to modulate cortical rhythms in Parkinsonian mice.

Modulating the subthalamic nucleus (STN) through neural circuits can suppress abnormal discharge rhythms in the primary motor cortex (M1) in Parkinson's disease (PD), thereby enhancing motor function. However, a clinically viable noninvasive deep brain stimulation method for PD has yet to be realized. We developed a noninvasive transcranial magnetic-acoustic coupling stimulation (TMAS) system, employing a theta burst stimulation (TBS) mode, to examine its effects of simulated electrical parameters on cortical rhythms in PD. The theta burst-TMAS (TBTMAS) system was established, and its physical

Spatiotemporal evolution analysis of multiscale fracture dynamics in hydraulic shale stimulation via integrated acoustic emission and CT imaging.

Volume fracturing technology critically enhances shale oil recovery by generating complex fracture networks through interactions with shale anisotropy, bedding planes, and natural fractures. However, the spatiotemporal evolution of multiscale fractures under varying in situ stress anisotropy and construction parameters remains poorly understood. This study integrates CT scanning and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring to investigate hydraulic fracture propagation in 300 mm × 300 mm × 300 mm shale samples under controlled geomechanical conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that shale with
