Adaptation of the acoustic reflex.

Acoustic reflex adaptation is reviewed in normal and abnormal auditory systems. The measurement variables affecting the acoustic reflex threshold are discussed with reference to the intensity level above reflex threshold at which the adaptation is measured. The effects of the activator frequency and activator intensity level on the time course of normal reflex adaptation are reviewed. The diagnostic application of acoustic reflex adaptation is discussed with reference to the different definitions of abnormality found in the literature. The acoustic reflex patterns, including absence, threshold

Acoustic reflex averaging.

Signal averaging techniques have been applied to acoustic reflex measurement in order to meet the need for better temporal resolution and more accurate threshold delineation. We describe an approach to reflex measurement based on a signal averaging technique designed to examine both threshold and suprathreshold characteristics of the acoustic reflex. Results indicate that: (1) many supposed reflex threshold and latency aberrations are actually amplitude aberrations that are inappropriately classified because of instrumentation constraints; (2) reflex amplitude and waveform morphology can be re

Acoustic shock controversies.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis 'acoustic shock' has been made increasingly in the health care industry in recent years. This paper aims to question the validity of acoustic shock as an organic pathological entity. METHODS: The experiences of 16 individuals diagnosed as having acoustic shock, within a medico-legal practice, are reviewed. RESULTS: The commonest symptom was otalgia, followed by noise sensitivity, tinnitus, hearing disturbance and dizziness. CONCLUSION: The presence of noise-limiting technology in the workplace, the variation in the nature of the acoustic incident involved (ranging

Cystic acoustic neuroma.

To define the clinical characteristics of cystic acoustic neuroma, we retrospectively analyzed 22 patients with cystic acoustic neuroma and reviewed the literature with regard to clinical manifestation, imaging features, diagnosis, surgical procedures and prognosis. An acoustic neuroma was defined as cystic according to the following criteria: the presence of hypodense/hypointense areas on CT or MRI, the identification of cystic elements at operation and histological verification. At the end of surgery, the facial nerve was anatomically intact in 86.4% of cystic acoustic neuromas. Complete rem
