Evolution of fossorial locomotion in the transition from tetrapod to snake-like in lizards.

Dramatic evolutionary transitions in morphology are often assumed to be adaptive in a new habitat. However, these assumptions are rarely tested because such tests require intermediate forms, which are often extinct. In vertebrates, the evolution of an elongate, limbless body is generally hypothesized to facilitate locomotion in fossorial and/or cluttered habitats. However, these hypotheses remain untested because few studies examine the locomotion of species ranging in body form from tetrapod to snake-like. Here, we address these functional hypotheses by testing whether trade-offs exist betwee

Adaptive introgression as a driver of local adaptation to climate in European white oaks.

Latitudinal and elevational gradients provide valuable experimental settings for studies of the potential impact of global warming on forest tree species. The availability of long-term phenological surveys in common garden experiments for traits associated with climate, such as bud flushing for sessile oaks (Quercus petraea), provide an ideal opportunity to investigate this impact. We sequenced 18 sessile oak populations and used available sequencing data for three other closely related European white oak species (Quercus pyrenaica, Quercus pubescens, and Quercus robur) to explore the evolutio

Assessment of trophic ecomorphology in non-alligatoroid crocodylians and its adaptive and taxonomic implications.

Although the establishment of trophic ecomorphology in living crocodylians can contribute to estimating feeding habits of extinct large aquatic reptiles, assessment of ecomorphological traits other than the snout shape has scarcely been conducted in crocodylians. Here, I tested the validity of the proposed trophic ecomorphological traits in crocodylians by examining the correlation between those traits and the snout shape (an established trophic ecomorphology), using 10 non-alligatoroid crocodylian species with a wide range of snout shape. I then compared the ontogenetic scaling of trophic eco

Effects of a Chemically Characterised Multi-Component Nutraceutical Formulation on Intestinal, Hepatic and Skeletal Muscle Responses in an In Vitro Gut-Liver-Muscle Model.

Autophagy plays a central role in cellular homeostasis and metabolic adaptation, and its dysregulation has been implicated in metabolic disorders, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study investigated the biological effects of a chemically characterised multi-component nutraceutical formulation using an integrated in vitro gut-liver-muscle axis model under lipotoxic and inflammatory conditions induced by free fatty acids (FFAs) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The principal bioactive constituents were quantified in both the individual extracts and the final formulation befo

Adaptive genomic signatures of globally invasive populations of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti.

In the arboviral vector Aedes aegypti, adaptation to anthropogenic environments has led to a major evolutionary shift separating the domestic Aedes aegypti aegypti (Aaa) ecotype from the wild Aedes aegypti formosus (Aaf) ecotype. Aaa mosquitoes are distributed globally and have higher vectorial capacity than Aaf, which remained in Africa. Despite the evolutionary and epidemiological relevance of this separation, inconsistent morphological data and a complex population structure have hindered the identification of genomic signals distinguishing the two ecotypes. Here we assessed the corresponde

[The role of clinical laboratory testing in athlete monitoring: health, performance, and prevention of overtraining].

Physical activity provides numerous health benefits but may also be associated with biological alterations related to training intensity, nutritional deficiencies, overtraining, or doping practices. This article reviews the main biological parameters used in athlete monitoring and their relevance for assessing health status, adaptation to exercise, and performance. These parameters encompass hematological, biochemical, and endocrine markers. The complete blood count enables the evaluation of blood cell adaptations to exercise and the detection of anemia or abnormalities in erythropoiesis. Bioc

Core set of recommendations for patients with ankylosing spondylitis concerning behaviour and environmental adaptations.

Advice concerning behaviour and adaptations of living and working environment is considered an unmet need by patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The aim of this study was to develop a core set of recommendations to be given to patients by their rheumatologists. A systematic literature research of scientific and patient-oriented literature revealed 70 raw recommendations. These recommendations were evaluated and ranked at a meeting of the Ankylosing Spondylitis International Federation (ASIF, 26 participants including 19 patients with AS, 5 rheumatologists and 2 physiotherapists from 13

Mutation-biased adaptation is consequential even in large bacterial populations.

Because mutation rates vary widely across genomes and environments, natural selection is typically presented with highly biased variation. Yet, the idea that mutational tendencies can influence adaptation is still controversial. While mutation-driven adaptation has been observed in diverse taxa, critics contend it reflects small populations or weak-effect mutations. Therefore, the importance and generality of this phenomenon remain unclear, largely due to a lack of empirical tests across broad population-size gradients and multiple fitness-relevant traits. Here, we address this gap using a sys

Genomic signature of accelerated evolution in a saline-alkaline lake-dwelling Schizothoracine fish.

Tibetan Plateau imposes extremely inhospitable environment on most wildlife. Besides the harsh aquatic environment including hypoxia and chronic cold, high salinity and alkalinity is an increasing threat to Tibetan endemic fishes. Previous genome-wide studies identified key genes contributed to highland fish adaptation to hypoxia and long-term cold, while our understanding of saline and alkaline adaptation in Tibetan fish remains limited. In this study, we performed a comparative genomics analysis in a saline lake-dwelling highland fish Gymnocypris przewalskii, aimed to identify candidate gene

Genome-wide analysis of the Escherichia coli Keio collection reveals genetic determinants associated with ferulic acid responses.

Ferulic acid (FA) is a widespread plant derived phenolic compound with diverse biological activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition to its importance in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical applications, FA is abundant in lignocellulosic biomass, where it functions both as a microbial stress factor and as a metabolizable aromatic intermediate during bioconversion processes. Despite its broad biological and biotechnological relevance, the genetic basis underlying bacterial adaptation and tolerance to FA remains poorly understood. In this study

Positive Selection and Gene Expression Analyses from Salivary Glands Reveal Discrete Adaptations within the Ecologically Diverse Bat Family Phyllostomidae.

The leaf-nosed bats (Phyllostomidae) are outliers among chiropterans with respect to the unusually high diversity of dietary strategies within the family. Salivary glands, owing to their functions and high ultrastructural variability among lineages, are proposed to have played an important role during the phyllostomid radiation. To identify genes underlying salivary gland functional diversification, we sequenced submandibular gland transcriptomes from phyllostomid species representative of divergent dietary strategies. From the assembled transcriptomes, we performed an array of selection tests

The role of viral evolution in rabies host shifts and emergence.

Despite its ability to infect all mammals, Rabies virus persists in numerous species-specific cycles that rarely sustain transmission in alternative species. The determinants of these species-associations and the adaptive significance of genetic divergence between host-associated viruses are poorly understood. One explanation is that epidemiological separation between reservoirs causes neutral genetic differentiation. Indeed, recent studies attributed host shifts to ecological factors and selection of 'preadapted' viral variants from the existing viral community. However, phenotypic difference

Polycystic ovary syndrome: a transgenerational evolutionary adaptation.

Polycystic ovary syndrome has a common association with anovulatory infertility, while the physical symptoms are often associated with the increased androgens that are part of the endocrine profile. There is a well-recognised association with lipid and glucose metabolism anomalies and, when undergoing ovulation induction, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. This common condition is familial, but a contributory gene has yet to be found. The question of why a gene that predisposes to anovulation, diabetes and heart disease might have perpetuated so frequently is addressed. Three hypotheses for ev

Climatic Niche Shifts During Biological Invasions Decrease With Genetic Diversity Loss.

Climate niche conservatism is a fundamental assumption for predicting biological invasion risks and species range expansion under climate change. However, increasing evidence across taxa has revealed climatic niche shifts in species within new ranges. Although considerable effort has been made to identify ecological predictors of climatic niche shifts, the genetic process underlying species adaptation to novel climate niches is largely unknown. Here, on the basis of 84 introduction events with specific native population ranges for 38 non-native terrestrial vertebrates worldwide, we found that

Effects of nucleotomy on segmental flexibility: A numerical analysis.

Nucleotomy, a common treatment for disc herniations, aims to relieve pressure on spinal structures. While effective in alleviating symptoms, this intervention can compromise spinal stability. However, previous in vivo studies in sheep have demonstrated conflicting results with significant long-term stiffening of the spine following nucleotomy, with occasional spontaneous fusion of the affected motion segment. The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical regulation of tissue adaptation processes post-nucleotomy using computational modeling. A parametric finite element model of

Strength of selection potentiates distinct adaptive responses in an evolution experiment with outcrossing yeast.

Selection intensity is expected to influence the magnitude and genetic architecture of adaptive responses, yet it is rarely evaluated as a standalone variable in experimental evolution studies. Here, we evolved outcrossing populations of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for ∼200 generations across a spectrum of environmental stress from zero to moderate to high ethanol exposure, to examine how genomic responses vary with stress intensity. Across treatments, adaptation proceeded through many subtle allele and haplotype frequency shifts rather than large changes at single loci, consistent with a highly

Host-parasite coevolution leads to underwater respiratory adaptations in extreme diving insects, seal lice (Lepidophthirus macrorhini).

Lice are obligate ectoparasites that have co-evolved with their hosts, particularly during the transition of mammals from terrestrial to amphibious habits, as sea lions, seals and walruses, and have undergone parallel adaptations to the extreme conditions of the deep sea. By combining morphological, physiological and genomic analyses, we are shedding light on a key process for surviving prolonged submersion: respiration. Under water, lice immobilise, close their spiracles, reduce their oxygen consumption to a minimum and breathe through their tegument. The presence of haemoglobin genes in thei

Cancer as an evolutionary process at the cell level: an epidemiological perspective.

Germ-line mutations (present in all cells) in genes that are crucial for the cell cycle cause cancer only in specific cell lines (e.g. mismatch repair genes in the colon; BRCA1-2 in breast and ovary; other cancers in Bloom syndrome, neurofibromatosis and xeroderma pigmentosum). The mutation rate of genes other than mismatch repair or p53 is the same in colon cancer and in normal cells, indicating that a 'mutator phenotype', increasing the rate of mutations in many genes, is not an essential feature of sporadic cancers; conversely, fusion genes, TEL-AML1/AML1-ETO, typical of leukemia, are 100 t

Latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis-persistence, patience, and winning by waiting.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a globally successful pathogen due to its ability to persist for long periods of time unrecognized by the human immune system. The panoply of genes that allows the organism to enter latency and then re-emerge later during endogenous reinfection are now being elucidated. Novel antimicrobials and vaccines will need to target these mycobacterial pathogenic mechanisms to suceed against tuberculosis.
