Prevalence of Epstein-Barr virus in tonsils and adenoids of United Arab Emirates nationals.

OBJECTIVE: Given that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) often inhabits human tonsils and adenoids, it remains to be distinctively determined its prevalence and in which cell and microenvironment the virus is present. METHODS: To determine the prevalence of EBV in the tonsils and adenoids of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) nationals and to provide a basis for understanding the origin and biology of EBV-infected cells, the immunophenotype of all EBV-infected cells in 46 tonsils and 46 adenoids was determined by EBER in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry with monoclonal antibodies to T cells (CD3

Identification and immunolocalization of the innate immune receptor CD14 in hypertrophic adenoids and tonsils.

The purpose of this study is to determine the expression of CD14 as a marker of the innate immunity in hypertrophic adenoids and tonsils. Twenty-four pediatric patients (age <12 years) with obstructive adenotonsillar hypertrophy, confirmed by sleep study were included in this study. Intensity and expression of positive CD14 infiltrating cells was assessed by immunohistochemistry in specific histologic areas. In tonsils, CD14 immunoreactivity was demonstrated in intraepithelial lymphocytes located in the basal layer of the stratified squamous mucoepithelium. CD14 expression was significantly hi

Search for Herpesvirus 1 and 2 by in situ hybridization in tonsils and adenoids.

OBJECTIVE: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) has been described as cause of acute tonsillitis. It has also been found in nasopharyngeal florid lymphoid infiltrate, mostly composed of CD4+, CD56+ T-cells, simulating lymphoma. In spite of its widespread prevalence in latent form, to the best of our knowledge no study is available on in situ detection of HSV in chronically hyperplastic nasopharyngeal lymphoid tissue. The purpose of the present study was to search for the presence of HSV 1 and 2 in 21 adenoids and 15 tonsils from children (2-12 years of age) in which these organs had been surgically remo

[The tonsils and adenoids as a site of infection and the cause of obstruction].

The failure to eradicate group A beta-hemolytic streptococci from the pharynx is partly due to a low compliance, but above all, an alteration of the oropharyngeal microbiological flora: reduction of alpha-haemolytic streptococci which inhibit group A beta-hemolytic streptococci and increase of microorganisms such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis. These latter act indirectly destroying the beta-lactamic ring of penicillins. However, this obstacle is overcome by the use of antibiotics which do not contain beta-lactamic rings such as macrolides or associa

Role of adenoids in the pathogenesis of otitis media: a bacteriologic and immunohistochemical analysis.

Adenoidectomy is frequently performed in children suffering from recurrent or chronic otitis media with effusion and is thought to produce a long-term effect in preventing further episodes of otitis media. Bacteriologic analysis of adenoids from 60 patients revealed a significantly elevated colonization rate of middle ear pathogens in children with a present or previous history of ear disease compared to children with adenoidal hypertrophy only. The predominant pathogen was nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae, followed by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Moraxella catarrhalis. Quantitative analysis

[Cor pulmonale due to upper airway obstruction by hypertrophied tonsils and adenoids (author's transl)].

A case of cor pulmonale is reported, due to chronic nasopharyngeal obstruction by hypertrophied tonsils and adenoids. This syndrome is characterized by stridor, somnolence, arterial hypoxia and hypercarbia, pulmonary and right heart failure. The pathogenesis of this syndrome is due to pulmonary hypoventilation. After tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy the symptoms disappeared.

Mechanistic Insights into the Role of Adenoid Hypertrophy and Chronic Adenoiditis in the Pathogenesis of Pediatric Chronic Rhinosinusitis: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize available evidence on the mechanistic role of adenoid hypertrophy and chronic adenoiditis in the pathogenesis of pediatric chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), given that the mechanistic relationship between adenoid disease and pediatric CRS remains incompletely synthesized. DATA SOURCES: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. METHODS OF REVIEW: Eligible studies included children with CRS and evaluated adenoid- related mechanisms, including mechanical obstru

Adenoid facies: a long-term vicious cycle of mouth breathing, adenoid hypertrophy, and atypical craniofacial development.

Adenoid hypertrophy (AH) is characterized by pathological hyperplasia of the nasopharyngeal tonsils, a component of Waldryer's ring, which represents the first immune defense of the upper respiratory tract. The pathogenic factors contributing to AH remain to be comprehensively investigated to date. Although some studies suggest that environmental exposure to smoke and allergens, respiratory tract infections, and hormonal influences likely contribute to the development of AH, further research is necessary for fully elucidating the effects of these factors on the onset and progression of AH. Adenoid Basal Carcinoma with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Component of the Uterine Cervix: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) is rare cancer with a favorable prognosis. However, some ABCs are associated with other histological types, such as squamous cell carcinoma. Here, we present a case of a mixed tumor of ABC and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the cervix, with a detailed immunohistochemical study and literature review. We describe a case of a 66-year-old woman who underwent cervical cancer screening that led to the detection of a 0.7 cm nodular lesion. Cervical punch biopsies revealed a high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion. Cervical conization revealed a mixed carcinoma comp

Correlation between adenoid-nasopharynx ratio and endoscopic examination of adenoid hypertrophy: a blind, prospective clinical study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the reliability of adenoid-nasopharynx (A/N) ratio that is calculated on lateral cephalometric graphies for measuring the adenoid tissue size. METHODS: 85 patients that had been examined in our clinic with a prediagnosis of adenoid hypertrophy between June 2007 and March 2008 were included in the study. Local ethics committee approved the study protocol. Patients who had a previous adenoidectomy history and anatomic anomaly or acute infection in nose, palate or nasopharynx were excluded. Endoscopic nasal examination was done in all patients in addition to the routine e

Metatypical Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Palate.

PURPOSE: The term "metatypical" is anecdotally employed to describe histopathological variations that can be found in salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma. METHODS: A 68-year-old man presented with a painful palatal nodule developed over the period of 6 months. A cone beam computed tomography showed a soft tissue-based mass with penetration into maxillary bone. An incisional biopsy was performed. RESULTS: The histopathology revealed a biphasic tumor predominantly composed by myoepithelial-type basaloid cells arranged in trabeculae and macrocysts with focal squamous differentiation. Occasi

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma in the esophagus.

Esophageal adenoid cystic carcinoma (EACC) is an exceedingly rare malignant tumor constituting only 0.2% of all esophageal tumors. The tumor exhibits aggressive behavior, composed histologically of ductal and modified myoepithelial cells. We report a case of a 69-year-old female with a diagnosis of an EACC by preoperative endoscopic biopsy. Thoracoscopy esophagectomy was carried out. However, pleural metastasis was found. Therefore, surgical resection of the esophageal tumor was not carried out. The patient underwent an uneventful recovery, followed by palliative treatment and ongoing chemorad

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a slowly progressing malignant tumor of the salivary glands that mostly affects minor salivary glands. ACC of parotid gland is exceptionally rare. In this article, we aimed to provide a case report of parotid gland ACC in a 55-year-old female that was misdiagnosed as benign mixed tumor. The patient was successfully treated by surgery without any complications. We recommend that ACC of parotid gland should be considered in differential diagnosis of benign mixed tumor since there still existed overlapped imaging characteristics.

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma with Intracranial Extension.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ADCC) is a malignant tumor of salivary gland origin. ADCC of sinonasal tract is rare. We present a rare and unresectable case of sinonasal ADCC with intracranial extension in an 83-year-old man with the chief complaint of nasal congestion. Invasion to the maxillary sinus, nasopharynx, anterior cranial fossa, sella turcica and extension to cavernous sinus, dura mater and infratemporal fossa were evident on MRI and CT scan. The patient was treated only by palliative radiotherapy, but unfortunately, he died 3 months after the initial diagnosis.

The adenoid: Its history and a cautionary tale.

The existence of the adenoid first appears to have been noted by Conrad Victor Schneider in 1661. James Yearsley reported in 1842 one case in which he improved hearing by removal of a mucus membrane from behind the uvula, which indicates some appreciation of a relationship of the nasopharynx to ear disease. Hans Wilhelm Meyer, in 1868, was the first to demonstrate the relationship of the adenoid to ear disease and to develop an effective, although somewhat difficult, surgical operation to remove the adenoid. Removal of the adenoid became rapidly accepted worldwide as a treatment for many morbi

[The possibilities for the rational pharmacotherapy of adenoiditis in the children].

The available literature data give evidence that viral infection is the main cause underlying the development of inflammatory nasopharyngeal pathology in the children. According to ICD-10, nether acute nor chronic adenoiditis should be considered as a self-consistent nosological entity. Acute adenoiditis is usually regarded as a form of acute nasopharyngitis (J02) or acute respiratory viral infection (J06.9) whereas chronic adenoiditis is commonly referred to as representing other chronic diseases of the tonsils and adenoids (J 35.8). The reactive changes in the nasopharyngeal tonsils begin to
