An adrenal cortical tissue tumor developed in a patient with poorly controlled salt-losing congenital adrenal hyperplasia. A 16-year-old girl became progressively virilized from 13 to 16 years of age. Base line serum progesterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, and testosterone levels were high and there was a diurnal pattern of the hormones. Initially elevated urinary 17-ketosteroid and serum steroid levels were decreased by high dose dexamethasone therapy, and at laparotomy an adenoma was found in the cortex of the hyperplastic left adrenal gland. It is inferred that persistent adrenocorticotrophic

At autopsy there was found extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma, bilateral diffuse-nodulous and adenomatous hyperplasia of the adrenal cortex in a female patient who had suffered for a long time from high arterial pressure. In the enlarged thyroid gland there was revealed micro-macrofollicular colloid goiter with basedowification. The morphological changes and results of an investigation of the liquor (drop in the content of potassium) justify the assumption that in this case there is a combination of extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma with hormonally active rearrangement of the adrenal cortex--primary

Mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids are steroid hormones that are released by the adrenal cortex in response to stress and hydromineral imbalance. Historically, adrenocorticosteroid actions are attributed to effects on gene transcription. More recently, however, it has become clear that genome-independent pathways represent an important facet of adrenal steroid actions. These hormones exert nongenomic effects throughout the body, although a significant portion of their actions are specific to the central nervous system. These actions are mediated by a variety of signalling pathways, and lea

The adrenal gland plays a pivotal role in an organism's health span by controlling the endocrine system. Decades of research on the adrenal gland have provided multiscale insights into the development and maintenance of this essential organ. A particularly interesting finding is that founder stem/progenitor cells participate in adrenocortical development and enable the adult adrenal cortex to regenerate itself in response to hormonal stress and injury. Since major advances have been made in understanding the dynamics of the developmental process and the remarkable regenerative capacity of the

The sex-specific prevalence of adrenal diseases has been known for a long time. However, the reason for the high prevalence of these diseases in females is not completely understood. Mouse studies have shown that the adult adrenal gland is sexually dimorphic at different levels such as transcriptome, histology, and cell renewal. Here we used RNA-seq to show that in prepubertal mice, male and female adrenal glands were not only sexually dimorphic but also responded differently to the same external stimulus. We previously reported that thyroid hormone receptor β1 (TRβ1) in the adrenal gland is m

Pituitary tumours are the cause of hyperadrenocorticism in a variety of species, but the role of the pituitary gland in hyperadrenocorticism in ferrets is not known. In this species, the disease is mediated by the action of excess gonadotrophins on the adrenal cortex and is characterized by an excessive secretion of sex steroids. In this study, the pituitary gland of four healthy control ferrets, intact or neutered, and 10 neutered ferrets with hyperadrenocorticism was examined histologically following immunohistochemical labelling for adrenocorticotrophic hormone, alpha-melanocyte-stimulating

The adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla, functionally quite distinct, re discussed separately. Knowledge of the steroid biosynthesis with its three productive pathways (glycocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and sex hormones) is essential not only to understand the physiopathology of the adrenal cortex, but also to delineate the necessary diagnostic hormonal screening tests and the applied treatment modalities. When surgery is indicated a precise preoperative evaluation of the patient is essential with correction of all possible anomalies. With this all in mind the Cushing syndrome, the adreno

A well developed extra-adrenal cortical body with an axis of 200-700 micron was found in eighteen of thirty adult male Wistar rats under a stereomicroscope. All eighteen bodies were located between the kidneys. Blood vascular beds of sixteen of the eighteen bodies were reproduced with a methacrylate casting medium and observed with a scanning electron microscope. The extra-adrenal cortical body was found to contain remarkably numerous capillaries which anastomosed with each other to form a conglomerated network; it received one afferent vessel and issued one to three (usually, one) efferent ve

Primary adrenal myelolipomas, relatively rare benign tumours of the adrenal cortex are typically unilateral, hormonally inactive and asymptomatic, hence often diagnosed as 'adrenal incidentaloma'. Bilateral adrenal myelolipomas, in particular, may be associated with underlying endocrinopathies associated with elevated circulating adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) concentration. Subclinical cortisol hypersecretion, irrespective of its ACTH dependency, does not manifest typical clinical phenotype of hypercortisolemia, and thus termed subclinical Cushing's syndrome. In this article, hormonal eva

Hyperadrenocorticism is a common endocrinopathy which results from the excessive production of cortisol by the adrenal cortex. In the majority of cases, this increased secretion of cortisol results from stimulation of the adrenal cortex by adrenocorticotrophic hormone secreted from the pituitary gland. In a smaller number of cases adrenal tumours are present. Clinical signs are variable but commonly include polydipsia and polyuria, polyphagia, obesity, a pendulous abdomen, hepatomegaly, alopecia, lethargy, weakness and anoestrus. Haematology, serum chemistry analysis and urinalysis should be p

Biosynthesis of steroid hormones in the cortex of the adrenal gland takes place in smooth endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria and requires NADPH. Four enzymes produce NADPH: glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), the key regulatory enzyme of the pentose phosphate pathway, phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD), the third enzyme of that pathway, malate dehydrogenase (MDH), and isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH). However, the contribution of each enzyme to NADPH production in the cortex of adrenal gland has not been established. Therefore, activity of G6PD, PGD, MDH, and ICDH was localized and

A 67-year-old man affected by prostate cancer was incidentally found to have a nodular enlargement of the left adrenal gland without apparent changes in hormonal status. The adrenal mass was found to be scintigraphically active, the radiolabelled compound being concentrated in its context with a consensual suppression of the contralateral uptake. The patient underwent a resection of the adrenal tumor. Histologically and biochemically, the adrenal mass was found to be a non-functioning adenoma. The radioisotopic uptake along with the non-hormonal activity prompted us to call this tumor "Pre-Cus

The adrenal cortex plays essential roles in the control of sodium and water homeostasis, stress response, inflammation and metabolism, through secretion of glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Coordinated production of these hormones relies on functional zonation of the cortex, characterised by expression of Cyp11b2 under the control of angiotensin II and plasma potassium level in zona glomerulosa (ZG) and Cyp11b1 under the control of ACTH in zona fasciculata (ZF). The mechanisms involved in the establishment of functional zonation and its maintenance during centripetal cortex cell renewal

The ability of ACTH fragments and of an ACTH analogue [9-tryptophan(o-nitrophenylsulfenyl)] corticotropin-(1-24)-tetracosapeptide[Trp-(Nps)9 ACTH1-24] to stimulate adenylate cyclase in bovine adrenal cortex membranes and a crude membrane fraction from rat adrenals has been determined. Partial agonists like Trp (Nps)9 ACTH1-24 displayed intrinsic activity in the rat adrenal preparation only if tested in the presence of 5'-guanylylimidodiphosphate [Gpp(NH)p]. On the other hand, no addition of Gpp(NH)p was necessary to demonstrate intrinsic activity of Trp(Nps)9 ACTH1-24 for bovine adrenal cortex

The adrenal gland produces steroid hormones that act in the homeostasis of organisms. During aging, alterations in the hormonal balance affect the adrenal glands, but these have not yet been fully described due to the lack of adequate animal models. The adrenal gland of the Mongolian gerbil has a morphology similar to the primate's adrenal gland, which makes it a possible animal model for endocrine studies. Therefore, the current study aimed to study the morphophysiology of the adrenal gland under the effect of aging. For this purpose, males Meriones unguiculatus, aged three, six, nine, twelve

The adrenal gland cortex produces life-sustaining steroid hormones that are critical for the development and survival of the fetus and neonate. Antenatal and postnatal administration of steroids has critical therapeutic effects in preterm infants. However, prolonged postnatal steroid therapy for more than 1 to 2 weeks is associated with iatrogenic adrenal insufficiency and should prompt consideration of a steroid taper and stress dose precautions. In this review, we will describe fetal adrenal development and steroidogenesis, the effect of antenatal exogenous steroids, the therapeutic role of

"The present results indicate that there is a close relationship between the incretory function of the kidney, which is shown by the discharge of renin and similar materials, and the function of the adrenal cortex, especially the zona glomerulosa, which is the place of production of the sodium-retaining hormone aldosterone . Salt load inhibits the production of renin and aldosterone, while salt deprivation stimulates the production of both. The excess of sodium-retaining corticoids (DOC or aldosterone) together with sodium suppress the secretion of renin, while a deficiency of cortical hormone

Primary aldosteronism is the most common form of secondary arterial hypertension, due to excessive aldosterone production from the adrenal gland. Although somatic mutations have been identified in aldosterone producing adenoma, the exact mechanisms leading to increased cell proliferation and nodule formation remain to be established. One hypothesis is that changes in vascular supply to the adrenal cortex, due to phenomena of atherosclerosis or high blood pressure, may influence the morphology of the adrenal cortex, resulting in a compensatory growth and nodule formation in response to local hy
