Studies on internal exposure doses received by the cuban population due to the intake of radionuclides from the environmental sources.

Studies for the determination of radionuclide concentrations in foodstuffs, water and air were carried out in Cuba for the estimation of annual committed effective doses to members of the public as a result of environmental radionuclides via ingestion and inhalation. As a result of these studies, it was possible to determine the concentrations of 226Ra, 210Pb, 210Po, 232Th, 90Sr and 137Cs in different food groups that constitute the diet of the Cuban population, as well as the 222Rn concentrations in air. Based on these results and using previously obtained results for doses due to the 40K bod

[Urogenital tuberculosis in the Ukraine population].

The prevalence and incidence rates of urogenital tuberculosis in the Ukraine in the past 10 years were studied. They tended to decrease in the first period (1988-1992) and to become stable in the second period (1993-1997), being equal to 10.71 and 1.0 per 100,000. In the past 5 years, the incidence of urogenital tuberculosis tended to increase among urban residents as compared to rural ones. These changes show a total trend in the population living in the radioactively polluted area.

Chromosome analysis of peripheral lymphocytes from persons exposed to radioactive fallout in Norway from the Chernobyl accident.

Chromosome analysis of peripheral lymphocytes from two Norwegian populations (44 reindeer herding South samis from Røros and Snåsa, 12 sheep farmers from Valdres) exposed to fallout from the Chernobyl accident were made. The doses from caesium through the years 1987-1991 were calculated based on whole-body measurements 134Cs and 137Cs giving a total cumulative mean internal dose of 5.54 mSv for the total group of 56 persons. Chromosome aberrations were within the normal range when compared with historical controls with the exception of dicentrics (0.3% per cell, which is a 10-fold increase) an

In-vivo dose determination in a human after radon exposure: proof of principle.

Radon-222 is pervasive in our environment and the second leading cause of lung cancer induction after smoking while it is simultaneously used to mediate anti-inflammatory effects. During exposure, radon gas distributes inhomogeneously in the body, making a spatially resolved dose quantification necessary to link physical exposure conditions with accompanying risks and beneficial effects. Current dose predictions rely on biokinetic models based on scarce input data from animal experiments and indirect exhalation measurements of a limited number of humans, which shows the need for further experi

Negative correlation between the number of sunspots and the occurrence of 7Be and 22Na in the surface air and their contribution to radiation doses.

This article presents yearly mean concentrations of cosmogenic radionuclides 7Be and 22Na occurring in dry and wet depositions (fallout) and aerosols. Time dependencies negatively correlated with the yearly mean number of sunspots. Activity concentrations of 7Be and 22Na in aerosols in the surface air had a correlation of near-unity. 7Be in aerosols exhibited a smoother time dependence than 22Na, implying that the production of 22Na is more sensitive to the solar activity than the production of 7Be. The effect of the measured doses on the general population through internal and external exposu

Radon exposures in a Jerusalem public school.

In December 1995, ambient radon levels exceeding 10,000 Bq/m3 were measured in a basement shelter workroom of a multilevel East Talpiot, Jerusalem, public elementary school (six grades, 600 students). The measurements were taken after cancers (breast and multiple myeloma) were diagnosed in two workers who spent their workdays in basement rooms. The school was located on a hill that geologic maps show to be rich in phosphate deposits, which are a recognized source for radon gas and its daughter products. Levels exceeding 1000,000 Bq/m3 were measured at the mouth of a pipe in the basement shelte

Real-time simulation of accidental passive transport of radioactive pollutant from a proposed nuclear power plant.

Power plant's site selection is a complex task and involves through analyses of multi-disciplinary processes which are interlinked with each other. The site selection for nuclear power plants additionally requires an assessment of radiation doses to the environment and public during normal operation and in the case of an accident. This demands the problem of radioactive particles' dispersion in atmosphere to be analysed in real time for a comprehensive set of radioactive release scenarios in prevailing meteorological conditions in the plant surroundings. In this study, a local scale atmospheri

Development and calibration of a passive sampler for monitoring airborne 131I in nuclear medicine facilities.

Monitoring volatile iodine-131 (131I) in nuclear medicine is of great importance for occupational protection. Conventional active monitors require continuous power and generate noise, necessitating reliable passive alternatives. Herein, we report the development, geometric optimization, and dynamic calibration of a passive sampler tailored for airborne organic 131I (CH3131I). To maximize High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detection efficiency while maintaining an optimal Fickian diffusion length, the sampler's geometry was optimized using LabSOCS Monte Carlo simulations. An optimal diameter-to-heigh

Eddy covariance towers as sentinels of abnormal radioactive material releases.

Ensuring accurate detection and attribution of abnormal releases of radioactive material is critical for protecting human health and safety. Most commonly, such detection is accomplished via active monitoring approaches involving the collection of physical samples. This is labor intensive and limits the temporal and spatial resolution of any detected events to a relatively coarse level. As an alternative first step towards passive monitoring, we developed an approach using eddy flux tower data records to identify signals from a known abnormal release and quantify the extent to which that signa

Inversion of Critical Atmospheric 137Cs Emissions Following the Fukushima Accident by Resolving Temporal Formation from Total Deposition Data.

Understanding the transport of 137Cs emitted during the Fukushima accident is challenging because the critical emissions that produced the high-deposition area are not adequately resolved in existing source terms. This paper presents an objective inverse reconstruction of these emissions by fusing atmospheric concentrations with a-priori emissions extracted from total depositions. This extraction, previously considered impossible for complex real-world accidents, is achieved by identifying the critical temporal formation process of depositions in the high-deposition area and estimating the cor

Ultra-low-level measurements of airborne fission products from the Fukushima Daiichi reactor accident using high volume collection systems at Savannah River National Laboratory.

Ultra-low-level measurements of radionuclides in air have been conducted at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) to determine the atmospheric concentration of fission products released following the Fukushima Daiichi reactor accident on March 11, 2011. Air filter samples were acquired from two high-volume collection systems (a traditional filter-based system and an electrostatic precipitator-based system) to monitor airborne radionuclide concentrations in the period covering from 2 weeks to 3 years after the disaster. The world-wide spread of low-level concentrations of airborne fissi

Radon exposure and oropharyngeal cancer risk.

Oropharyngeal cancer is a multifactorial disease. Alcohol and tobacco are the main risk factors. Radon is a human carcinogen linked to lung cancer risk, but its influence in other cancers is not well known. We aim to assess the effect of radon exposure on the risk of oral and pharyngeal cancer through a systematic review of the scientific literature. This review performs a qualitative analysis of the available studies. 13 cohort studies were included, most of them mortality studies, which analysed the relationship between occupational or residential radon exposure with oropharyngeal cancer mor

Recent results from a study of thorium lung burdens and health effects among miners in China.

The purpose of this study was to obtain more information about health effects among the dust-exposed male miners of Bayun Obo Rare-Earth and Iron Mine, China. From 2,390 male miners from the seven dust-generating workshops of the mine, 136 dust-exposed miners were randomly selected for study. Of these, 64 men were from the high-dust-generating workshop and 72 from the lower-dust-generating workshops; the latter group was used as an internal control. Physical measurements and medical examinations were carried out on each of these 136 men. The average measured thorium lung burden for the high-du

Lung cancer incidence associated with radon exposure in Norwegian homes.

BACKGROUND: Radioactive radon gas is generated from uranium and thorium in underlying rocks and seeps into buildings. The gas and its decay products emit carcinogenic radiation and are regarded as the second most important risk factor for lung cancer after active tobacco smoking. The average radon concentration in Norwegian homes is higher than in most other Western countries. From a health and cost perspective, it is important to be able to quantify the risk of lung cancer posed by radon exposure. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We estimated the radon-related risk of lung cancer in Norway based on risk

Indoor and outdoor radon measurements at lung cancer patients' homes in the dwellings of Rize Province in Turkey.

In this study, indoor and outdoor radon (222Rn) surveys were carried out in the summer and winter seasons in homes of one hundred lung cancer patients in the year 2013-2014. The aim was to investigate the relationship between radon and cancer patients. Lung cancer patients completed a questionnaire concerning their living environment, various physical parameters and living habits. Pearson correlation and t tests revealed no meaningful results between radon concentrations, on one hand, and environmental and personal living habits, on the other hand. Consequently, the BEIR VI model was adapted a

Biomarkers of genotoxicity of air pollution (the AULIS project): bulky DNA adducts in subjects with moderate to low exposures to airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their relationship to environmental tobacco smoke and other parameters.

The levels of bulky DNA adducts were measured by (32)P-post-labelling in lymphocytes of 194 non-smoking students living in the city of Athens and the region of Halkida, Greece, once in the winter and again in the following summer. Personal exposures to particulate-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were significantly higher in Athens subjects during both seasons. There was hardly any diagonal radioactive zone in the pattern of DNA adducts observed. Highest adduct levels were observed in a sub-group of subjects living in or near the Halkida Institute campus, which was located in rural

Selection of ecologic covariates in the American Cancer Society study.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) Study of the effects of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution on mortality used metropolitan areas to assign exposures to individual cohort members (Pope et al., 1995); these authors did not, however, control for any other place-specific variables in their analysis. Consequently, the study has been criticized on the basis that the association observed between air pollution and mortality may be confounded by other unmeasured ecologic covariates. To address this criticism, the reanalysis team selected a set of place-specific variables that measured determi

Radiation hygienic evaluation of nuclear fission products (review).

Nuclear-fission products (NFP) are a complex mixture of radionuclides of variable organotropism. Their physicochemical properties depend on the conditions of their formation and age. In a contaminated environment they are a source of external, contact, and internal gamma- and beta-irradiation. Dangerous is the entry of NFP into the organism, especially that of children and pregnant women. In a radiation-hygiene review, the author sums up his own materials and those of other investigators on radiation injuries developing upon the contamination of the skin and penetration of NFP into the organis

Detection of atmospheric carbon dioxide with air-lasing-based coherent Raman spectroscopy.

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) is recognized as a powerful technique for chemical sensing, biological imaging, and combustion diagnostics, but it is rarely used in atmospheric detection due to complex multi-beam configuration and fine spatio-temporal control. Air lasing provides an attractive probe source for CARS, largely simplifying its implementation. Herein, we successfully detected atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) using air-lasing-based CARS spectroscopy and quantified its concentration to be 485.5 ppm and 502.0 ppm based on two CARS signals. The measured concentrations exhi
