Facilitators and barriers to anal cancer screening among men with HIV and their providers in Alabama.

Anal cancer, primarily caused by persistent high-risk HPV infection, is increasing worldwide. Men who have sex with men (MSM) and men with HIV (MWH) have incidence rates over ten-fold the rate among the general population. We explored health beliefs related to anal cancer, and perceived benefits, barriers, and facilitators to screening among MWH and their HIV care providers in the U.S. South, where HIV incidence remains high. We conducted in-depth interviews and thematic analyses to identify themes related to health beliefs (i.e., perceived knowledge of HPV and cancer, benefits of screening, a

Implications of Prenatal Exposure to the Spring 2011 Alabama and Missouri Tornadoes on Birth Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Despite emerging evidence of the detrimental effects of natural disasters on maternal and child health, little is known about exposure to tornadoes during the prenatal period and its impact on birth outcomes. We examined the relationship between prenatal exposure to the spring 2011 tornado outbreak in Alabama and Joplin (Missouri) and adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional cohort study using the 2010-2012 linked infant births and deaths data set from the National Center for Health Statistics for tornado-affected counties in Alabama (n=126,453…

The incidence of group B streptococcus in the vaginal tracts of pregnant women in central Alabama.

Group B streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae) or GBS is the most common cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis in the United States. One important risk factor for infants who acquire GBS is maternal colonization. Colonization rates have been estimated in various studies to be between 15% and 35% of pregnant women. Colonization rates for black women have also been shown to be higher than for non-blacks. Local data were collected and compared to those of other studies. Of the pregnant women in this study overall, 22.76% tested positive for GBS. Black women were colonized by GBS (35.71%) sign

Histomonosis and Lymphoproliferative Disease Virus in Male Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) in Alabama, USA.

Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) are an important game species in the USA and have experienced population declines in many areas of their range for >10 yr. Among other hypotheses, increased disease prevalence or novel disease emergence could be contributing factors in Wild Turkey population declines. To address some knowledge gaps and further understand the impacts of two important diseases on Wild Turkey populations, we sought to document the prevalence of histomonosis and lymphoproliferative disease virus (LPDV) in Alabama, USA, and to evaluate the spatial epidemiology of LPDV. We collecte…

Cross-Sectional Study of Soil-Transmitted Helminthiases in Black Belt Region of Alabama, USA.

We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) in areas of rural Alabama, USA, that have sanitation deficits. We enrolled 777 children; 704 submitted stool specimens and 227 a dried blood spot sample. We microscopically examined stool specimens from all 704 children by using Mini-FLOTAC for helminth eggs. We tested a subset by using molecular techniques: real-time PCR analysis for 5 STH species, TaqMan Array Cards for enteric helminths, and digital PCR for Necator americanus hookworm. We analyzed dried blood spots for Strongyloides ster…

Essential Oils of Four Virginia Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum virginianum) Varieties Grown in North Alabama.

Virginia mountain mint (Pycnanthemum virginianum) is a peppermint-flavored aromatic herb of the Lamiaceae and is mainly used for culinary, medicinal, aromatic, and ornamental purposes. North Alabama's climate is conducive to growing mint for essential oils used in culinary, confectionery, and medicinal purposes. There is, however, a need for varieties of P. virginianum that can be adapted and easily grown for production in North Alabama. Towards this end, four field-grown varieties with three harvesting times (M1H1, M1H2, M1H3; M2H1, M2H2, M2H3; M3H1, M3H2, M3H3, M4H1, M4H2, M4H3) were evaluat…

Increased risk of agricultural injury among African-American farm workers from Alabama and Mississippi.

Research on the epidemiology of agriculture-related injuries has largely ignored African-Americans and farm workers. This cohort study is the first to estimate injury rates and to evaluate prospectively risk factors for agriculture-related injuries and compare them among African-American and Caucasian farmers and African-American farm workers. A total of 1,246 subjects (685 Caucasian owners, 321 African-American owners, and 240 African-American workers) from Alabama and Mississippi were selected from Agricultural Statistics Services databases and other sources and were enrolled between January…

Biogeochemical and seasonal nutrient dynamics of restored estuarine oyster reefs in Mobile Bay, Alabama.

Nutrient overloading in aquatic environments can degrade water quality and cause eutrophication, disrupting ecosystem function and local economies, including Mobile Bay, Alabama. Oyster reef restoration is a promising strategy for nutrient sequestration and estuarine recovery. Yet, few studies have examined how oysters affect the biogeochemical dynamics of nutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and carbon (C), limiting our ability to develop restoration best management practices (BMPs). This study investigated the effects of eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) size class (juvenile …

LGBTQ+ Health Inequities in a Rural, Conservative Context: Alabama Compared with Other Southern States.

OBJECTIVES: There are no statewide statistics regarding the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) Alabamians. To fill this gap, we used data collected by the Southern Equality Research and Policy Center to compare Alabama with other southern US states regarding the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ people. METHODS: We tested for unadjusted differences between Alabama and other southern states using χ2 tests for dichotomous outcomes and the Wilcoxon rank-sum test for ordinal outcomes. Multivariate logistic models predicted dichotomous outcomes from an Alabama indicato…

Tick-Borne Pathogens Associated with Medically Important Ticks in Alabama: A Four-Year Survey.

Background: Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) represent a significant threat to human health in the United States. Based on reported cases of notifiable TBDs to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the state of Alabama is no exception, yet previously there has been no active surveillance program in place to comprehensively assess the presence and prevalence of tick vectors and their associated TBD pathogens in Alabama. Here we summarize initial findings from a 4-year survey to address this unmet need. Materials and Methods: Beginning in 2018 and proceeding through 2021, ticks were col…
